Thankyou to Little People Big dreams for letting me read this.
Some may recognise Cox from Orange this the new black but she's done so much more.
Laverne Cox's story of growing up in a time when society as whole did not understand or even know of the concept of transsexualism, and how difficult aspects of her life were until she found her tribe on her way to success.
Cox learnt that being different is okay, she over came bullying, being told off by her mum and feel such shame for who she wanted to be.

I think it shouldn't be hard to teach children about expressing themselves or about acceptance. This book will 100% help to explain how everyone matters and everyone is different.
But just because you're different doesn't mean you're not beautiful.

Laverne Cox's life story is realistically and sensitively discussed in the wildly successful Little People, Big Dreams books. The series brings to light some of the world's true legends from all walks of life and Laverne Cox sits comfortably in the series.
As the series is trying to be more inclusive and diverse - the introduction of Laverne Cox to young children may also raise lots of questions too as it discusses transitioning.

The illustrations are lovely and warm and are a great accompaniment to Laverne's story.

The newest addition of the Little People Big Dreams series, Laverne Cox written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is releasing 9/13/22. By reading about Laverne Cox's story of growing up in a time where society as whole did not understand or even know of the concept of transsexualism, and how difficult many aspects of her life were until she found her tribe on her way to success.

I really appreciated the aspect of normalizing discussions around the topic of gender identity, and I recognize the importance it holds within the series. While I did enjoy the story itself, the illustrations did leave me wanting more. Even with the consideration of how simplistic people are illustrated within the Little People Big Dreams series as a whole, I just could not see Laverne Cox in the illustrations at all and it unfortunately took away from the experience for me.

This was a good entry into this series! It has a good message, and I thought it dealt with gender identity pretty well.

It's not hard to teach children about diversity and to respect other people's life choices. Nor should it be hard to make your child feel safe enough to disclose their own life choices with you. What easier way to share these important messages with a beloved one than to simply open a picture book and read it to them! Another installment of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series that presents a life story that inspires and empowers.

I love these books, and this one did not disappoint! Laverne Cox is so great and I'm glad her story is being told. As always, the illustrations are great and it does a good job of getting the message across.

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Laverne Cox is an icon to many. She has shown us how to live an authentic life. How did she come to live as her true self and to be comfortable with her identity? Young children will find out as they explore this latest, excellent entry in the ongoing series Little People, Big Dreams.

Any child who knows that their perceived sex does not mesh with their identity will be reassured by this book. It will also be a wonderful tool in teaching acceptance and respect for others. It belongs in nursery school and home libraries. Well done!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books (Quarto Publishing Group) for this title. All opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this picture book about Laverne Cox. I have been familiar with her for a while, but never knew much about her childhood. The drawings are adorable and the language is affirming. I enjoyed learning about her life and journey to acting and understanding who she is.

Thank you to the publisher for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
