This extract was a great intro and really interesting. I look forward to reading the rest of this book!
I have always known Cariad Lloyd from panel shows and Live at the Apollo, but became more interested when I watched her on QI. Then more recently she was a guest on Between the Covers and I was impressed by her intelligence and insight. That signposted me to her podcast and I really did feel welcome. I became a widow at 34 after a seven year marriage to someone who was extraordinary and my genuine soul mate. I decided to order this book immediately after reading this extract, thats how good this was. I found the tone so honest and real. I felt like the author understood that death and grief are unpredictable, sad and can even be a source of black humour. The author is full of compassion and anyone who wants to use their own pain to support and help others is a superhero as far as I’m concerned. Brilliant.
I read this exclusive extract at exactly the right time. I started it about a month after my mother died, put it down for a month, then came back to it when I felt ready to do so. The writing is heartfelt - serious but with a lightness of touch that is exactly as needed for this sort of subject matter. The tone is sympathetic yet encouraging. When I read it I can hear Cariad speaking quietly to me, as if she has her arm around my shoulder - a reminder that this really will be okay.
I'll be getting my hands on a full copy of this as soon as it is available because, of all of the books I've started to read about grief, this is the only one I want to continue. It's the only one I think will help. And purely for that reason, it already feels like a must-read for the recently, or not so recently, bereaved.
Thank you, Cariad, for sharing your story with us.
This short extract gives you a real flavour of the book, and I'd love to read it when it is published, although I'm sure it will make me cry as even parts of the extract did. This is a raw, honest perspective on grief written in a style and language that's easily accessible. It doesn't try and provide explanations or models (or certainly not in the extract I read). It simply acknowledges that grief is a tough place to hang out and that that place will be different for us all. It doesn't diminish anyone's personal experiences. In contrast; it accepts everyone will approach grief differently and go about it their own way. It doesn't talk about getting through it but instead acknowledges that if someone you love dies, then grief doesn't end. It's simply that we learn to live with it. At times it's presence is immediate and at times it backs away and give us more breathing space. My mum died almost 15 years ago, and while most days are fine, the tinest thing can trigger a memory or that longing to be with her again. Grief is therefore part of my life now. I'm part of the club as Cariad refers to it. In my case it's the Dead Mum's Club.
I'm sure this book will be helpful to many and a reassurance that when it's your turn to meet grief, you're not alone.
Brilliant! Can’t wait for the full piece. I’ve been a fan of Griefcast since it started- Cariad Lloyd is a brilliant talent, a fantastic host and, it appears, a fantastic writer too
From The short exert I have read this looks to be a Frank and honest book about loss and grief and a really good read. I look forward to reading the whole thing when it’s released.
I really enjoyed reading this extract and look forward to reading the whole book. Cariad has such a wonderful tone to her writing, it’s deep and powerful but with just the right amount of humour. I really resonated with what she was saying in this introduction and feel like this book would really benefit some friends of mine as well as myself. I can’t wait to recommend it to them
I appreciated the opportunity to read the introductory section of Cariad Lloyd's You Are Not Alone and would like to carry on reading more to find out about her grieving process and that of other people she has spoken to.
I love Cariad Lloyd's writing style - it is so conversational and makes a topic that can be very heartbreaking, into something a lot more easy to digest.
I am grateful to have read this exclusive extract - but I just want more.
I cannot wait to be able to read the full book as the opening is wonderful and right up my street!
Wonderfully written, I hope the rest is just as good. If it is then this is a firm favourite. Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.
