Wonderfully illustrated Viking saga about a courageous heroine and her love for her baby brother lost at sea.
A small yet epic tale of family, being yourself and following your spirit of adventure... even if your big brothers tell you to stay home and wash dishes!
Loved it - Viking girl chases her dreams (and her brother).
Hiccup wanted to be something other than that which his father wanted for him. And he was a BOY. Wilma is a Viking girl, not missing a limb, not a dragon rider, but she's also NOT happy to stay home and wash dishes, cook stinkfish, darn the men's underpants. Er no.
Wilma wants adventure, not boring domestic drudgery. But that's for the MEN, according to her brothers. Unfortunately baby Harald hears his destiny and goes off to be brave and big and manly. Uh-oh, who is there to rescue him??
With excitement and adventure within the confines of a 32-page picture book, both the destiny and choices of a boy and a girl are sieved and weighed and they both show us that it's not up to society to tell us who we are, it's up to us to decide what WE want from life. Not bad for a children's bedtime story. Sorry, saga.
Very cute pictures belie the high-seas and dark exploits - this could have been a full 'How to Train Your Dragon' novel for older children set in the same universe, but it works very nicely as a short story with child-friendly pictures and scenes of a more pastel Viking world for little ones.
Great lesson, lovely pair of characters, and it could even herald (Harald?) a sequel.
For ages 3-8.
With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample reading copy.
I thought that this was a lovely book and it was on that I enjoyed reading with my daughter!
The book was really easy to read and the author has told the story really well and it had a lovely natural flow to the book.
The characters were great and we did have a little giggle at the story.
I loved the adventure and the ending was fab too we would love to see another book starring Wilma!
It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended
The story is fun, with the repetition that is pleasing to children and has detailed illustrations. Wilma is a Viking with grand plans to sail away and slay monsters, but her older brothers tell her that only male Vikings get to do that sort of thing, and she must stay at home to care for them and their little brother. When the time comes for her little brother's bedtime story, he's nowhere to be found and Wilma sets off on a daring adventure to rescue him. My small human was not very interested in this particular book. He doesn’t seem to have the interest yet in Vikings and he only kept asking why the older brothers laughed at the sister. As that really bothered him.

This would be great to read at storytime with a group of children, or to have on the shelf at home. It's sure to become a favourite.
