A fascinating collection of poems by an often overlooked writer. The Goblin Market, with its striking imagery, is probably the standout but all the poems are worth reading.
I love pre-raphaelites painters and I know Dante Gabriele Rossetti's work and about his sister but never read Christina Rossetti before.
I loved her image and her poetry. The Gobiin Market is a poem open to any type of interpretation and I loved it.
There's a lot to love in this author's works and I hope more people will read her.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Sumptuous..
Beautifully illustrated and produced edition of this collection of sumptuous works from Rossetti. The Goblin Market stands, as perhaps the best known and most oft interpreted piece, alongside other poetry in this delightful volume. Considered to be the leading female poet of her time, this work will hopefully bring a new audience to the beauty of her words.
Goblin Market and Other Poems is the collection of Christina Rossetti's best and most critically acclaimed works. Most poems focus on loss, grief, temptation, sacrifice and salvation. The meter and rhyme of the poems are sometimes playful, teasing and at times of sorrow and longing. Even though some of the thoughts haven't aged well, it is expected for most classics of that era. Some of my favourites are the Gobin Market, "No Thank you, John", My Secret and Echo. Including the Original illustrations by Laurence Housman was a nice touch. Elizabeth Macneal's Introduction was brilliantly concise and insightful.

Thank you, NetGalley/Pan Macmillan Publications, for this book in lieu of an honest review.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this collection.
I personally could’ve done with fewer religion themed poems, but other than that this book was pretty good.
Goblin Market and Other Poems is a beautiful collection of Christina Rossetti's best. The original illustrations by Laurence Housman are present, as well as a new preface by Elizabeth Macneal. Highly recommended!!
This is such a fascinating and well thought out collection of the best of Christina Rossetti. I have sto study her as part of my degree and this will be useful in many ways. Definitely a collection I will read over and over again
I’m not big on poetry, but The Goblin Market and other poems are some I’ll return to every few months, and all it takes for me to be interested in a book is to get that it reimagines them. Love these poems and definitely want this on my shelf!
This is a really well thought out collection of the best of Christina Rosetti's works. The introduction chapter by Elizabeth Macneal was insightful and a heartfelt dedication to a brilliant writer and the life she led. As always Goblin Market is a stand favourite of mine amongst the collection but it was great to also see works like The One Certainty feature as well.
I was drawn to Rosetti by the connection with Virginia Woolf, who was an ardent admirer of her work.
The more traditional forms and rhyming schemes imparted a sort of sing-song quality, that invites you to read them aloud and enjoy how easily they roll off the tongue.
Though for all the idyllic qualities, one could glean a multitude of meanings from these poems. Taking Goblin Market, while the gist of the narrative is that of young sisters off on midnight escapades with magical creatures, there's also an underlying sensuality, illustrated by the descriptions of food and their consumption.
Indeed, there has been such a dizzying variety of interpretations to this day. To me at least, this is the foremost sign of endearing and enduring poetry, the ability to have it's relevance renewed for generations to come.
Which isn't to say it's all sunshine and daffodils. Rosetti has a melancholic side to her poetry, that leaves one gasping with it's sincerity and aching beauty. The innately lyrical and lilting quality of her work during these moments leaves us with a sense of singing oneself off to sleep hoping never to wake again.
This is a lovely collection of Rosetti's poetry, starting with the Goblin Market, which contains beautiful illustrations. I quite enjoyed the first section with its themes of relationships, nature, and more. Some of the poems were like tiny stories and I was transported to the world she described. The foreword was short but informative and I was glad it was included.
Perhaps about 2/3 of the way through the book, a section on Rosetti's devotional work begins. I must admit I did not connect with this part at all. This may be because I am not a Christian--it may resonate more with people identify with some form of that faith. I still found this section of the book worth reading, however. It was interesting, in a detached sort of way. All in all, I would recommend this book to those who are interested in Rosetti's work or in poetry in general.
These poems are just beautiful, lyrical gems of literature. They’re the sort of poems that you read and just can’t resist speaking out loud because they roll off the tongue so perfectly. You can’t help but read with rhythm and soul upon each poem and before you know it, you will have read the entire book.
It started with Goblin Market, one of my favourite poems which has the most gorgeous illustrations!! Seriously beautifully done and make a fantastic accompaniment to the poem. Then follows a compilation and amazing assortment of Christina Rossetti’s poems.
If you’re a fan of her work, love reading poetry or just fancy a quick read, this is exactly what you’re looking for! It’s the sort of thing to have on your shelf and a thing you can read and reread at your leisure.
