A Word a Day is a fantastic book for your own children as well as your classroom. The words are complimented with a pronunciation guide, the type of speech it is, a definition and occasionally an etymology. It is a fun way of building vocabulary and understanding, it encourages learning without the child knowing it! The words are carefully selected for each day with purpose for example International Women’s Day or World Happiness Day. The explanations are very accessible and the pictures are engaging, the text concise but comprehensive making it a fun way to learn and there is a good combination of modern and older words.

The illustrations are bright and engaging. This is a wonderful way to improve vocabulary with a reluctant reader or those who find “longer, unfamiliar words” tricky. Great book for enquiring minds and a way to encourage a love of language.

A great resource for the classroom to dip in and out of and an alternative to Google!

An interesting idea and will be useful in the classroom. Other similar books exist but it is always great to have a fresh one for children to flick through.

I want to love this book but I have to say that I am a bit undecided about this one. There are a lot of similar books on the market. This one seems to be a random list of words picked out of the dictionary. It is similar to the Mrs. Wordsmith series but the concept is less well-developed. The Mrs. Wordsmith series includes text from stories that uses the featured word and thus helps create a context for the featured word. This one is just a random list of words. I doubt if children would remember the words after seeing it.

As a logophile myself (one of the first words introduced), I really loved this book. It is split into months and dates so there really is a word for every day of the year. Words are linked to important days where possible and these are pointed out in the book. Definitions of each word are simple and clearly explained for children and the illustrations are cute but clean, again appealing to a young reader. I could see this getting used in my classroom to introduce new vocabulary on a daily basis and I will certainly be buying a copy for myself.

Riley is absolutely loving learning new and interesting words at the moment and then using them...not always in context but A* for effort! I remember Leo being like this at the same age too.

Never mind the kids though - I love this book too. A great conversation starter over the breakfast table - reading, defining and using the new word in a sentence. Each day you have a new word, how to pronounce, what part of speech it is and a definition.

Such a great gift idea for kids who love English or may need some help in expanding their vocabulary in a fun way!

A Word a Day is a fantastically bright illustrated book containing 365 days of words and meanings. I especially love that each word has a part of speech underneath to identify the word as a Noun, Verb, Adjective or adverb. The book also highlights special events and festivals. Favourite word found in the book is hootenanny

With its bright, engaging illustrations this book showcases a broad variety of words (a new one for each day as the title suggests!) and would be an excellent book for building vocabulary and developing a deep interest in words with readers aged 9+The additional facts about the international days celebrated on different dates throughout the year or the information about the origins of some of the words really added to the experience too and I can see this becoming a well used and much loved resource in my classroom!

This book is full of words, descriptions, and cute illustrations.

It's exactly what it says it is and it's strangely enchanting. I'm 26 and me and my mum played the game of 'what does this word mean' and it kept us entertained. There were some words in there that we didn't know, or words we had heard but weren't sure on the meaning.

Honestly, if it can keep some adults entertained for a while, kids are going to love the one word a day. I especially love the pronunciation. I grew up with a speech impediment and things like this would have helped so much.

I got this on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!

I love books like this, where you can do one of something each day, so this was no different! Familiar yet very difficult and strange words in English, with a wide selection relating to holidays, seasons, and specific events! Can recommend this, especially for ESL / EFL teachers with older kids ('10 and up).

100% considering buying a physical copy of this to have!

This book is really lovely. Great variety of words with good explanations and adorable illustrations. Plus I’m learning that many words don’t actually mean what I thought they meant (and I’m 50!).

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

A Word a Day is a fantastic book for children and families to do together and has a word for every day of the year to learn the meaning of. I even learned some new words myself. I wish books like this had been available to me in my childhood as I would have adored this for sure. The illustrations are cute and I really enjoyed how the book has words selected for international days/events for certain days of the year e.g. International women's day. I found this a clever touch. I'm going to get a physical copy for my daughter hopefully for Christmas to do each day next year together. Such a fun way to extend your child's vocabulary, help with spellings and understanding of words and encourage learning.

"Word of the Day" is quite a trend at the moment, with many children lacking wider word knowledge (due in part to lockdown). This book showed a lot of potential but I feel fell a bit flat with not enough information or history of the word included. The words chosen are, in the main, good words but I'd have liked some more detail on each.

I thoroughly enjoyed diving into this and looking at dates that are significant to me. My KS2 class will really love this as they are always keen to learn new vocabulary which can be used in their writing. I'll definitely be buying a copy for my bookshelf as it will be perfect for dipping into either first thing in the morning or at the end of the day.

Wow! For someone that loves words what a great book to extend your child's vocabulary. There were new words I even learnt myself and would definitely purchase this for my children.

I would say this book is aimed at older primary/maybe even secondary aged children due to the level of understanding and retention required.

Only comment would be to make the graphics more appealing.
