Really enjoyed this - it's not necessarily anything new but what it does, it does really well. Here for the wholesomeness (unexpected in a book called Over My Dead Body), the likeable characters and the power of FRIENDSHIP.

Abby attends the Younwity's Institute of Magic with her friends.
Preparations for the Samhain festival are underway when Abby's closest friend, Noreen, disappears.
Abby doesn't understand why her other friends aren't more concerned about Noreen, and is determined to find her.
As Abby searches for Noreen, she uncovers long-buried secrets about another student that vanished decades ago.

As a fan of the author's art, I was intrigued to see what their graphic novel would be like, especially as I liked the witch aspect.
The characters were relatable and I really felt for Abby when she struggled so much with Noreen's disappearance.
I liked that the characters all had different kinds of creatures as their familiars, and that they talked.
The plot was enjoyable and held my attention, but I wasn't particularly shocked by anything that happened. However, I really liked the theme of friendship and found the setting interesting.
I really enjoy the author's style of drawing and liked the art throughout the book.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read.

SAPPHIC WITCHES WITH AUTUMNAL PALLETS? I am so happy right now ✨

I really wanted to read this as soon as I saw some small exerts of the artwork. Unsurprisingly, the whole novel lives up to expectation; the art is quite genuinely flawless. The colour pallets are cosy and autumnal and match the vibe of the story so well.

We follow Abigail and her friends who are searching for a friend of theirs after she goes missing on the lead up to Samhain.

The story was really well paced and developed and had me gripped the whole way. This is one of my favourite graphic novel reads in a while because it is so eerie and cosy to snuggle up with whilst the weather is abysmal out.

(Think The Worst Witch meets Nancy Drew)

Also it’s an absolute joy to see their familiars; my favourite were the hairless cat Seymour and the frog Romeo (honestly iconic.)

Rep// (there is only one MC but SC’s have a heavy focus in the story) Black WLW SC, White WLW SC (there is a developing romance that is WLW too)

TW’s listed below, please skip if you don’t want vague spoilers.

Tw// (One frame right at the beginning where a witch cuts her own hand in a spell to free a spirit who is trapped,) Death, Murder, Themes of abandonment, Poisoning, One scene with an almost drowning, Gaslighting.

I couldn’t read this book before it was archived as the text was showing up blurry on my phone — however, I loved the art style itself and I am definitely still interested in reading a physical copy of the book.

My thanks to Titan Books/Titan Nova for a review copy via NetGalley of ‘Over My Dead Body’ by Sweeney Boo.

It is said that in the days leading up to Samhain the veil between the worlds of the living and dead is at its thinnest. The witches studying at Younwity’s Institute of Magic have been warned not to venture into the surrounding forbidden forest. When Noreen, a young witch, disappears her fellow student Abby is distraught as they have been as close as sisters.

To Abby’s frustration her classmates seem to be more interested in the upcoming Samhain festival than Noreen and are content to leave it to the Coven elders to find her. Yet Abby can’t let it go and feels that the answer lies in the woods and the disappearance of another girl years previously

While I am always drawn to stories featuring witches and magical academies, I had mixed feelings about this graphic novel. While I wasn’t particularly engaged by its story and characters, I was very impressed by Sweeney Boo’s lush artwork, especially her use of colour and chiaroscuro. I also loved her depictions of the architecture of Younwity’s and its environs including the forest.

However, there were technical issues with the proof copy as most of the text wasn’t high quality and so when I zoomed in, it became fuzzy. This made reading the text painfully slow and severely interfered with the pacing.

As a result, I am rating ‘Over My Dead Body’ primarily on the artwork and not penalising the book over a technical problem. Before posting to Amazon U.K. I will check out their Kindle sample in order to gain a sense of the text quality in the finished product.

Edit 18 November
Checking out the sample of the Kindle edition, the issues I had with the low resolution text in the ARC were addressed and it was easy to read and follow the story.

wow that was nice

a story about witches, in a school of witchcraft and the mystery in it. I loved the graphics so much, they're cool & pretty. the mystery was gripping, and when the twist came i literally sat straight with mouth hung open. but the conclusion wasn't literally satisfying for me, I still don't understand what's the motive. it would've been better if there's sequel or at least more pages but yeah. still a good story nonetheless.

Thank you to Titan Books for sending me an eARC of the graphic novel Over my Dead Body by @sweeney_boo ✨ This one is out now!

Over my Dead Body is perfect for spooky season. At a boarding school for witches in October just a few days before Samhain a girl called Noreen has gone missing. Main character Abigail doesn’t think the school or coven is doing enough to find Noreen so she enlists the help of her best friend Goldie and Noreen’s friend Enver to get to the bottom of things.

This has everything I could have wanted from a witchy graphic novel! There’s magic, ghosts, stories about a demon in the woods, talking familiars, mystery, friendship, and a budding romance between two female side characters. This is also a standalone so it’s the perfect quick read to get in the Halloween spirit. 🎃🍁🍂

The artwork was absolutely gorgeous! Set in October there were outside scenes with gorgeous autumn leaves but I particularly appreciated that the colours used for the scenes inside were all autumnal colours as well. I think this use of colour combined with the spooky storyline created a wonderful atmosphere.

This won’t be an issue with the final product and it’s always a privilege to be chosen to read an ARC but I was frustrated that the format of the document had blurred a lot of the text bubbles. I got the gist of what was going on and still very much enjoyed the book but there was some text I just couldn’t read and I wanted to be honest about this and clear that my opinion is based on what I could see.

I gave Over my Dead Body 4/5🌟

3.5 Stars

Overall, I enjoyed this. The story is intriguing enough, and I liked the characters. I adored the artwork, visually this is a stunning graphic novel.

I think the biggest selling points for Over My Dead Body are the characters. All of them come across as individual and thought out. Even the “side” characters. Which is great and not always easy to achieve.
I’m a bit underwhelmed by the ending and also don’t think this story is particularly spooky. Having said that though I would definitely recommended, especially because of the art.

I was approved to review post-publication but misremembered the archive date as a week after after publication so I wasn't able to download it to review.

The perfect read for the spooky season….gripping story, beautiful illustrations, talking cats and a witchy/academia setting.

This is my first graphic novel by Sweeney Boo, I honestly don’t think it will be my last.

This was a wonderfully witchy graphic novel which could be read snuggled in a blanket with a hot chocolate by a fire. The artwork itself has a glow about it and I probably enjoyed the artwork a lot more than the text.

The text itself did have a fair few Harry Potter references that I don’t think brought much to the story. I wish the relationships between characters could have been developed a bit more as they seemed to be briefly mentioned.

It didn’t take long to read this and it was a fun spooky and cosy story to read on an autumn day.

Thank you Net Galley and Titan Books for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this was a beautifully written graphic novel. This dark academia book follows Abby as she looks into the disappearance of her close friend Noreen, whilst all her classmates don’t think of it as suspicious. It feels very much similar to the style of academia in Harry Potter. The illustrations perfectly enhance the story and it was very enjoyable to read.

Over My Dead Body is a surprising and beautifully witchy graphic novel. I love the art style and how it fits so well with the dark academia feel of the story. It’s the perfect autumnal read. The artwork is probably my favourite part but the plot holds its own as well, which makes for a very strong graphic novel. As a whole it is atmospheric and an extremely enjoyable reading experience. I would highly recommend!

Witchy and autumnal this is an excellent seasonal YA read for anyone who enjoy dark, creepy tales about magic and mystery. The illustrations are perfect for the text and there's a dark academia vibe that many readers will find very appealing. The story itself is a little predictable but it was a very enjoyable all the same and I would happily recommend this as a quick October read for anyone who likes to have a spooky TBR at this time of year!
Thank you to Netgalley.co.uk and Titan books for the free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It was a fun story and the artwork was gorgeous. The only thing is that I expected more?? it felt rushed and it was too short. It also gave me Sabrina vibe ~the netflix tv show. Anyway, I liked although I expected more. This graphic novel would be great with a sequel, just saying.

An entertaining graphic novel featuring witches and academia. There's elements' of Harry Potter and the story was entertaining.
I loved the drawings. I think it must be read in paper as it was a bit hard to read the small text.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

A sweet but predictable story. When a student from Younwity witches academy goes missing her relative Abigail tries to find her with the help if her friends. Along the way they discover secrets relating to a long lost family member and uncover the truth. It all ends happily.
Beautiful illustrations and a nice easy read if you don’t want anything heavy.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publishers for sending me a copy in exchange for a review.

I loved this witchy graphic novel so much! The art style was gorgeous, the plot was gripping, and I especially loved the familiars (Seymour is so cute).
The only problem I had in reading this was the actual text in the panels was too small to read, and when I zoomed in, the words became blurry. I assumed what was being said rather than being able to read it. Whether that was my iPad and its settings, or just a weird bug on the ebook proof, I don't know.

Overall, I would recommend this cute, spooky read, and it's perfect for this time of year!
