I think this might actually be my favourite book that I've read this year. Honestly, what a story. I LOVED everything about this book. I adored the characters, the premise, the plot and the development of each and every aspect of this story. This book was deep and emotional, while also somehow being lighthearted and joyful. I felt each and every emotion and laughed along at every bump in the road.
Rebecca Ryan knows how to write amazing characters and a plot that has you hooked with the turn of every page. I'm so glad I got to read this and I know for sure I'll be reading it again soon enough.
Thank you to the publisher for kindly providing me with an ARC via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this fabulous book. I’ve laughed and cried with Emily and her family/friends.
So many funny moments and so many moist eye moments.
I also loved the fact it was set In Huddersfield where I studied at University.
I look forward to reading more by this author in the future
What an absolute smasher of a debut novel. I loved everything about this book. Ryan's writing is fabulous. The story is told solely from main character Emily’s perspective and because of this you really get an insight into Emily’s world and thoughts and feelings which made for a really brilliant reading experience.
The storyline was original and well thought out with moments that made me laugh as well as more heartbreaking moments that left me in tears.
A triumph!
such an engaging read from the very start and full of humour. I loved the characters and the whole story and it was such a warming read with emotion too
A light hearted and poignant story about a woman who is struggling with her “average-ness”, in terms of her looks, size and aspects of her life in general. When the layers are peeled off, it emerges that she is still coming to terms with the death of her identical twin, who died many years before, and who she believes would have led a less average life than hers.
Beautifully written, but a bit slow in parts.
Reviewed in advance of publication, thanks to NetGalley.
A beautiful story about grief and trying to move on with your life after the loss of a loved one. This book was wonderfully written.
Emily Turner worries that she is a little too average. Having lost her twin to cancer at the age of eight, she has always felt lost and out of place, worried that her sister would have made a better job of having a bigger, brighter, shinier life. Emily vows to step out of her comfort zone and take steps - some small, some big - towards self-actualisation. A sweet, heartwarming story that's well-written and moving, particularly in the flashbacks to the girls' childhood.
This was such a lovely, life affirming read. It handles grief so well, but manages to be really funny! Emily is a lovable character and you can’t help but root for her ❤️
It took me a little while to get into this but I eventually really enjoyed it. The depictions of grief and the flashbacks are well done, and I liked most of the characters which is always nice. Love reading stories about people doing things to find themselves again.
What a great book to read it had me laughing out loud but also had me crying to im so gald i was given the opportunity to read this book early thanks NetGalley.
When watching a documentary on the average human experience, Emily realises she's the epitome of the typical woman. Her name, her height, her occupation… even her blood group. The only thing unusual about her is that she’s a twin. But her twin died when they were only 8 and Emily can't help but think maybe her sister was meant to live instead of her. Secretly she suspects her sister would have done a better job at life... better than average anyway. So Emily writes a list committing her to live a more extraordinary life… she’ll become a vegan, run a marathon and bungee jump.
I really like how this book was written mostly set in the present but also getting flashbacks of the past, I love how well the characters have been written, I don't think I can say there was one I didn't like even Leon and Bruce.
This is a story based on love, grief, family and friendship but also about finding yourself, I couldn't put it down would highly recommend giving it a read.
Thank you for the ARC.
What a fantastic book this was....
I really loved it and sat and read it from start to finish last night. Well written, funny and sad and I just could not put it down. I am not normally a fan of this genre but every so often I really enjoy reading them. I loved Emily, the rest of the characters are very interesting and develop well.
Highly recommended
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It has had me both giggling and sobbing at different points. I'm so glad I was given the opportunity to review this book. It's really such a lovely story.
The protagonist of the story, Emily, is both relatable and funny. She's got some past trauma she needs to work through and it follows her as she goes through her list with disastrous effects. It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking and finds the perfect balance.
I really enjoy the fact that the past is brought in but without taking too much of the focus. I find alot of the time it can detract from the main story, but I think the author has found a perfect balance in this.
I really can't recommend this book more, such a wonderful and easy read.
Five stars are not enough for My (extra)Ordinary Life. I absolutely adored this book. It is the most heartbreaking read and yet the most I have ever laughed out loud while reading a book. I loved Emily, Clare, Josh and Kaz and all the other characters. It felt like such a raw, honest portrayal of grief while being uplifting and heartwarming. You have to read this book, it is honestly the best thing I have read for a long time.
Oh this book is pure joy. It is completely relatable and utterly hilarious, with many laugh out loud moments, the characters in this book are pure joy and it's just a delight.
An absolute joy from start to finish. A laugh out loud HILARIOUS tonic of a book with a highly relatable protagonist that you cannot stop rooting for and a surprising undercurrent of emotional depth (no spoilers) that is written with such sensitively and authenticity that it left me with tears in my eyes.
Loved it and I cannot wait to see what Rebecca writes next.
I loved this book and read it all in one, far far too late into the night, the characters are, without exception, well described and just right for the role they play. A funny, kind, caring and poignant Emily, a witty best friend, a must right love interest and a family that is the one you want too. The love interest is vital but is almost secondary to just spending some months with Emily and egging her on with her quest.
What a brilliant debut novel this was!
Funny, poignant and heartbreakingly sad - Emily Turner is someone we can all probably relate to at some point in our lives.
She was a hot mess to begin with, and that's what I loved the most. The way she babbles on when nervous, drinks too much wine on a school night and lives off pizza 90% of the time made her a very endearing character.
The writing was also fantastic. Rebecca Ryan has a great knack of making me LOL one minute and wanting to cry the next.
I thought this was beautiful. There wasn't anything I didn't like about it.
Rebecca, you've smashed your first novel - Congratulations!
An excellent addition to the world of chick lit for readers of Sophie Kinsella and Lindsey Kelk, it’s like Bridget Jones for the modern age, a thoroughly enjoyable read
This is such a gorgeous story! I loved the main character – she was so likeable and funny and it was written with such a light touch. I won't give too much of the plot away but I'd really recommend reading. It's an uplifting story about making the most of life and stepping out of your comfort zone, but also with some sadness too that gives really depth to the novel.
I absolutely loved this debut! Ideal for fans of Mhairi McFarlane and Lindsey Kelk, this book has laugh out loud moments by the bucketful and I devoured it. The characters are lovable, the writing is fantastic and it's a definite 5 star review from me.
