A thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding read. The characters are believable and the plot real and heartbreaking. I fell in love with this family. A tantalising book.
This is the second book in this series but works well as a standalone. Delilah struggles to keep her family together and her hopes and dreams alive. A heartwarming, historical saga.
This is the second book in the series I hadn’t read the first book but luckily you could read this book as a standalone.
Delilah is the oldest daughter in the Shaw family and is the one who is keeping the family going. We see the family going from one hardship to another but she makes sure they are altogether and stick with one another. She makes friends with an Irish brother and sister. She tells them about the flower shop that she wants to work in.
I really enjoyed this book was well written and you felt for the family.
Look forward to the next book in the series. Would recommend this book.
Many thanx to the author, publishers and NetGalley for the chance to read and review this book
Can't remember ever having read any of Judy Summers books previously but I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Kept me reading from page 1 and throughout the whole book there were twists and turns in every direction! Just proves how much those young women, and their siblings, had to contend with to survive!
A really good book for a "quiet" time, gives one a little hope that no matter what the obstacle, we will overcome!!
Liverpool, 1847. At seventeen, Delilah Shaw is the eldest of the eight Shaw siblings, and the one who must take charge when her mother and brother die, and her father has an accident, she then has struggle after struggle trying to cope and then makes the heartbreaking decision to put the younger children in the workhouse as there is no other way for her to cope. A truly heartbreaking story that will tug at your heartstrings.
This book is all about families, the looking after each other, pulling together and making sacrifices.
Delilah Shaw is the eldest of her family and as such is expected to care for her siblings (all seven of them) after her mother’s death. The burden is not helped when her father has an accident at the docks leaving him disabled and without work.
The family all help each other, Delilah struggles along having to make the most dreadful decisions to keep her younger siblings fed and cared for. This does not stop her from showing kindness to others even if they are strangers. These acts of kindness bring dividends later in life.
I loved the detailed descriptions of the houses, people and workplaces, they just brought the book to life. So look forward to the next one.

If you love a beautifully depicted family saga then A Winter's Wish has to be on your to-read list. This story was utterly compelling and the characters and era were beautifully depicted.
Delilah's life is one of tragedy, and she does everything she can to keep her family together. There are scenes in this novel that are truly terrible so make sure you have some tissues ready because you are going to need them!
I thought this book was brilliant for beginning to end. A real treat for lovers of quality historical women's fiction.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the chance to read this arc.
The first book I've read by this author . Will not be the last. One girls struggle to keep house and home after loosing her mother . Not helped by her drunken father . Great for fans of Dilly Court and Emma Hornby.

A heartbreaking story that follows Delilah who has to become the main bread winner for the family after a tragic accident at the docks kills her brother and leaves her pa severally injured added to the heartbreak her mother dies during childbirth, a tragic life for Delilah as she trys her best to provide for her family all the while dreaming of a flower shop she would one day love to own
Wonderfully written and a book you can't put down as you want Delilahs fortune to change
A Winter's Wish by Judy Summers
Liverpool, 1847. At seventeen, Delilah Shaw is the eldest of the eight Shaw siblings, and the one who must take charge when her mother and brother die in a tragic manner, and her father is left disabled in an accident at the docks.
Taking care of the cooking, cleaning, washing and childcare is hard enough, but when they can no longer afford to live in the family home, Delilah must make the heartbreaking choice to leave it and to take two of her younger sisters to the workhouse.
A brilliant read of a family on hard times and how a young women is prepared to do all she can to keep her younger siblings safe for as long as she can.
