Super book. Did not disappoint.
Wow, what a beautifully written book. It was so nicely set against the backdrop of the war, you could identify with the characters and it left you with a warm feeling.
Dramatic, historical drama which begins with the bombing of Guernica. It was heart wrenching at times but also rather dry and drawn out.
I absolutely love historical fiction books but unfortunately I really did not enjoy this book. I found the plot weak and couldn’t engage with any of the characters.
I loved this beautiful story and easily became immersed in it so much that I could not stop reading. Now that I have finished reading it I feel lost but I know that it's one book that is going to stay with me forever. It is the most heartbreaking but intriguing historical fiction novels that I have ever read. The author has told it with compassion and honesty and has obviously done a lot of research.. I felt all the emotions along with Sibi from love, joy, sadness, heartbreak, grief, anger, resentment and outrage. I adored little Margrit and loved her fighting spirit. Of course I most of all fell in love with Ruby. If you know me you guessed right Ruby is a dog. I loved the writing style so much that I will definitely be reading more from this author and I would like a sequel to this gripping book.
The book was well written in that it stirred up all sorts of emotions while I was reading it and made me want to keep turning the pages to find out what would happen next. Dark and compelling, a slow-motion collapse; I read it in 24 hours with my heart in my mouth. So good!
This is the first book I’ve read by this author but it certainly won’t be my last. The plot is interesting and well researched, the characters are believable and I just had to keep turning the pages- always the sign of an enjoyable read.
16 year old Sibi and her 3 younger sisters are living in Guernica with their Spanish mother. Their German scientist father is back home in Berlin working and the family has been separated for a while due to an extended family visit to Spain.
Unfortunately the year is 1937 and the reader knows what is in store for this small Basque town. Sibi and her sisters are caught up in it- the description of the bombing and the aftermath are chilling but all too believable.
Move on a few years and Sibi is living back in Germany- however she is now spying for the allies as part of a resistance movement. How this has come about is explained beautifully in the novel and is completely understandable. She lives in fear every day but continues to act due to her inherent sense of knowing that she must do the right thing.
This is also a love story but that aspect of the plot is not the main focus of the book although I definitely enjoyed reading about Sibi and Griff’s growing feelings for each other as much as learning about Sibi’s dangerous activities which lead to her having to lie to evade the authorities on several occasions.
This was an excellent World War 2 novel which has been extremely well researched. The first part of the book which focuses on Guernica is written so realistically that I almost felt I was there experiencing this awful massacre.
The fact that Sibi’s father is a scientist is also interesting as it lends another aspect to the story, particularly when she becomes a spy and manages to learn information about important scientific developments to pass to the allies. All this is obviously based on fact and makes the story more realistic.
This was an enjoyable but at times heart wrenching read. Definitely five stars and recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and Hodder for my arc.
The atrocities in Guernica that terrifying day are described incredibly in this book and this story starts the evening before. What then follows is then I would argue a rather far fetched story, compiled from what I am sure are many elements of true events. A really insightful read which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to the author, Netgalley and publisher for my arc
The Girl From Guernica was a fantastic Historical Fiction and I absolutely loved it.
Picasso's painting of Guernica inspired this story and it done it justice from the very first page.
Sibi and her three siblings live in Guernica when civil War and World War 2 happened. Family shattered in half after German airplanes bombed the place and the story just takes off from there.
There's Romance but it's not the main focus of the story at all so don't let put you off.
The characters are all strong willed and don't give up hope.
The story is heart breaking, emotional, reviving but it's also full of Hope and survival
Highly recommended
This was a beautiful book full of suspense, heartbreak and hope.
It was amazing to see Sibi grow and develop throughout the timeline of the book and it felt like Griff really helped and supported her to do this.
A really well written and immersive piece of fiction.
Set in the Spanish Civil War and Germany in the Second World War. It is a story of immense bravery, unbelievable cruelty on a personal level, mass murder but also of undying love. I loved every minute of the the book and will certainly look out for more books from this author
This was not a story I was familiar with but after reading it I definitely want to learn more. It was well written, compelling and full of well developed characters that I quickly became invested in. I couldn't put it down
I have loved this story! True events, fictional characters. A story about a spy, about a family and also love. A family, half Basque through the mother and half German through the father. Though I am not keen on romance, it worked here very well while not being the main topic of the novel!
What I really enjoyed in the novel is the author's masterful way of making the reader feel like living first hand through Guernica as though he/she was there . Very powerful writing style with ongoing tension up to the end. Very emotional indeed because of its realistic description, but impossible to put the book down! Sibi, one of the four daughters will become a spy out of revenge while assisting her scientific father back in Germany.....
I also found the characters believable and I definitely got attached to the family and their little dog.
Even though the novel is not always easy to read emotionally, it remains a beautiful story. Highly recommended!
I received a complimentary ARC of this novel from NetGalley and I am leaving voluntarily an honest review.
What a riveting, detailed story of a young girl who due to a family tragedy grows up to become a WWII spy.
After the tragic event, Sibi returns to Germany and must try her best to fight the Nazi propaganda and Nazi regime as a whole to keep her family safe.
Really enjoyed this book, and found myself rooting for Sibi and her American rescuer throughout.
This story follows the story of Sibi and her sisters and how they survive the Guernica attack. Sibi has to be strong in Nazi Germany and will do anything to protect her family. A brilliant book about survival and family with the added benefit of a love story too. A super read. I would highly recommend. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me review this book.
