Engrossing thriller. New mum Janie Walker is feeling overwhelmed by the constant breastfeeding demands of her 6 week old daughter, and missing her former fulfilled, career-led life. She has the support of her partner Max, an ex-indie band member who now tutors kids privately.
After a visit from her 'in-laws' (they're not married), Max goes for a final drink with them but does not return home, even after promising to do the night feed for Janie. All sorts of secrets are being kept and Janie does not know why the family and close friend (Lianna) of Max are not as concerned as herself, at his absence. She turns sleuth and finds out more about what has happened and discovers there has been a murder the night of Max's disappearance.
What follows is a traumatic time for Janie, who does not know who she can trust. It gets worse - a child is then involved and Janie is frantic. Should she trust Max's family to protect her, or will she become an accessory to any crime that has happened? A good plot, lots of twists and hard to set aside, once you're engrossed. One star removed as towards the end I felt was a bit 'over-wordy' and I ended up skim-reading parts - but this could also have been due to excitement, so don't be put off!
This is a great read.
Janie is struggling to cope with being a new mum but with the support of her partner, Max, she’s getting there.
When Max suddenly disappears one night, Janie is so confused, as she can’t believe he would leave her or his new daughter.
Max’s family seem quite relaxed and think he’ll just turn up but as the hours tick by, Janie knows something has happened.
Her friends are there to support her but after a woman is found dead and Max seems to be linked to her, Janie’s belief in him starts to waiver.
This is a great thriller that will have you racing through the pages.
Thanks to Michael Joseph and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Unfortunately this book just wasn't for me. I really struggled and had to force myself to keep reading. I'm sure many others will enjoy it.
When Janie's boyfriend Max doesn't come home one night, she doesn't know what to do. Why would he leave her and their baby daughter with no explanation? Then the police turn up, asking questions about the body of a woman found outside a local bar. They want to know where Max was last night, where Max is now - but Janie has no idea. They want answers, but Janie only has questions.
Janie is a new mother struggling to bond with her baby. Her partner Max has disappeared. The police need to talk to him about a murder. This quick and easy read kept me turning the pages. I needed to know exactly what had taken place. There are some unexpected twists in this fast-paced thriller. Buried secrets are revealed. I also liked that we get a realistic portrayal of motherhood. The characters are well rounded and believable. I did not see the end twist coming. This is a really good domestic suspense thriller.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #MichaelJoseph #PenguinRandomHouse and the author #LeahKonen for my ARC of #YouShouldHaveToldMe in exchange for an honest review.
This is a book about trust, families, love and new motherhood. There are plenty twists in the story as Janie tries to find out if her partner Max is a murderer. It has a steady pace, with a decent plot and an unexpected ending. An entertaining read, well plotted but it just failed to hold my interest throughout. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
This book wasn't at all what I thought from reading the blurb, it was so much better full of twists and revelations right to the end!
The characters are developed in a way which makes you understand them and their way of coping with what happens. The twists all make sense after they had happened, building up to the final reveals. I had guessed a couple of the reveals but not that many!
I really enjoyed reading this book and picked it up whenever I could, I'm going to have to look at other books by this author as I enjoyed the writing style very much
I am afraid that this book was far too slow for me .I felt like I was stuck in groundhog day when I was reading it, nothing seemed to be happening and I didn't like it. Not for me ,I am too much of an impatient reader, sorry.
This book is a bit like marmite either you love it or hate it. This was a very slow read until the last 25% then it really picked up the pace and then it finished. The premise has been done many times before and better. I was more than a little disappointed in this book. I am sure other readers will enjoy it more just not for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Loved this book from the first chapter about Janie a new mum and Max her boyfriend. Janie's life is turned upside down when Max is accused of murdering a woman. and Janie tries to understand what happened and how Max became involved.
A real page turner and look forward to reading more of Leah Konen books.
Thanks to NetGalley & Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House.
I liked this book, but unlike others I didn’t love it. I found it very slow paced. It wasn’t until the final third of the book that the pace picked up and I felt the plot was finally moving along. I also didn’t really gel with any of the characters, Janie was partially likeable. Not one of my favourite books of the year but I’m sure others will love it. Thank you to NetGalley, Michael Joseph Penguin Random House and the author for the chance to review.
I spotted this author through a thread on twitter about PND/PNA/PPP - and as someone who had experienced extreme mental health issues through out both my pregnancies and post partum, I was very intrigued about the premise of this novel. I wasn't disappointed!
A gripping psychological thriller about a new mother questioning her sanity when her husband disappears and a woman is found murdered. Not all is as it seems for sure, and this novel really brings to life those hellish newborn days when you're in a sleep deprived fog and nothing seems real.
Rollercoaster Of Doubt..
Janie, Max and new baby are a unit aren’t they? There are no secrets. But are they? And, there are definitely secrets. When Max fails to return one evening and police come calling, so begins a rollercoaster of doubt and self doubt for Janie. A slow burn familial drama where not everything is as it seems. A deftly drawn cast of characters populate an emotionally charged plot.
Having loved Leah Konen’s The Perfect Escape last year, I was keen to get my hands on her next book. Set again in upstate New York (and despite the shady goings-on, it made me desperate to visit Kingston, which sounds like a gem of a place!), the novel follows new mother Janie. Sleep-deprived, struggling with motherhood and bordering on depressed, when her partner Max goes missing Janie is propelled headlong into a nightmare. Giving too many details of the plot, though, would spoil the many twists.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
I loved the author's previous novel The Perfect Escape so was thrilled to get the opportunity to read You Should Have Told Me.
Janie, Max and their baby daughter Freya have been spending time with Max's parents and his best friend when Max goes missing. Pretty soon he is wanted by the police for the murder of a woman outside a local bar.
This was such a gripping and compelling read that I raced through over the course of 24 hours. There were a few twists, it was well paced and I wasn't quite sure who to believe. The author writes well and this a genre I'm really drawn to. A really solid mystery that I'd recommend.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
This novel is a very slow burn, while the plot is interesting the execution makes it quite hard to stay engrossed in.
I’m sorry to say I didn’t finish this book. I read a third and found that I was easily distracted from it and wasn’t really gripped.
The back of the book sounded so exciting, and the way in which it is written is very believable and relatable. However, I found it a bit too slow for my liking and I was frustrated with the characters for their lack of action and concern.
I’ve seen a few comments whereby people have noted the amount of breastfeeding that is mentioned throughout the book. As a mum who exclusively BF for over a year I can tell you the amount it totally accurate and yes you do become very bold with how much of your body you expose of a daily basis. But having been there, done that and got the tshirt I still find that the intimate details of breastfeeding through crime fiction novels is a bit grating. It’s the ‘suckling’ that makes me pretend vom hahaha but hey each to their own.
Although I didn’t finish this book, I would classify it as much more fam-dram than proper crime fiction. Also an area that I don’t tend to enjoy either which is another reason I gave up.
But these are my own views and there are many that love it so much more. So best of luck to the author but this isn’t a book for me. Thanks to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book is a good book. However I missed the edge of your seat tension and all the twist and turns you don't see coming. However that being said it is well written.
Janie is a new mother, clearly struggling to cope with the demands of a newborn baby. However, her partner Max is a devoted father who can be relied upon to support both Janie and their daughter, Freya.
However, one night Max doesn't come home and Janie seems to be the only one concerned - not his parents nor his best friend seem perturbed. However, the Police then knock on Janie's door - a woman has been murdered outside a bar where Max was last seen and now its not just Janie who wants to know where Max is.
I think reading the synopsis of this, I was expecting more a page-turning thriller however I would describe this more as a slow burner. That's not a criticism as I generally prefer books with a slower pace to those which speed along.
As well as the main narrative (missing husband, dead body) which has been done before, Konen adds an extra element to the story through Janie's struggle to bond with her daughter which, coupled with her worry over Max, really makes you feel her anxiety. Don't get me wrong, a few times I could have given her a good shake especially in how she dealt with Max's parents and best friend but she was a complex character and a great protagonist.
The story ended well and whilst there was no major plot twist or rush of excitement at the end, I thought the conclusion to the story was satisfying and was written well.
This was my first novel by the author but will definitely keep an eye out for others.
Thanks to Netgalley and Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House, Penguin for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was intense and gripping from the beginning. Max is Janie’s partner, baby daddy, the love of her life. Max is also missing. A murdered woman is found and Max is the last person to see her before he goes missing himself. Did he kill her?
I was going to give this five stars as it really drew me in and put me on a rollercoaster of emotions but then I worked out what happened so decided to give it four BUT keep reading and it definitely deserves FIVE stars.
My only negative is Janie sometimes makes me want to shake her!
Thank you Netgalley & Leah Konen for an advanced copy of this book.
A slow burning doemstic thriller that focuses on the disappearnace of a new father who is then connected to a murder.
The writing is good and there is a good amount of suspense/mystery/action that kept me engaged and the twists defineitely kept me guessing, however I would have preferred a faster pacing in the story, so this is a 3.5 star for me
