I was really looking forward to reading this as I have loved this authors previous books.

Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I thought I would, it just didn’t jump out at me and I had to give up reading halfway through.

To a large degree this book is well written. Most of it is tense and terrifying, particularly the scenes where Amelie is a prisoner.
Things start to lose their way nearer the end of the book. A lot of information is given in quick succession, making it hard to follow at times.
I'm not sure about that ending. Would a prisoner really think like that about their captor? Maybe. It didn't quite work for me though.

Loved this book very cleverly written dark and grips you from the start to keep you wanting more. This is a story of Amelie from her past to the present.
Amelie marries Jed Hawthorne then one night they are kidnapped what follows is intriguing as Amelie tries to work out who the kidnappers are and find a way to escape.
It follows so many paths it will keep you guessing until the end.
Well done to B A Paris for a brilliant book and thanks to NetGalley & Hodder & Stoughton for a advanced copy.
Look forward to reading more from this author.

I did enjoy this book, it went back to the author's first book Behind Closed Doors in a way. It had the same claustrophobic feeling of dread throughout. I did find it a wee bit complicated and convoluted in the second half when we find out who some of the characters really were and what their motivations were. I'm still not 100% sure I managed to work them all out! Another thing that bothered me was so many American phrases/words. I know the book was probably written with a global market in mind but I like the dialect to be that of the country the book is set in.

I will always read a B.A. Paris book after loving Behind Closed Doors but this one sadly didn't do much for me. It's a fairly easy read and I got through it quickly but I simply wasn't invested, nor did I feel particularly gripped by it. It's definitely a slow burner (arguably too much so) of a book but the author is great at building atmosphere, really helping the reader to imagine the 'prison' but otherwise these chapters are repetitive and a bit dull. The protagonist Amelie is likeable and you do sympathise with her but she's the only real character who has been properly fleshed out and the other characters pale in comparisons. The ending was really disappointing. It was abrupt and lacked any real substance. It was very much just like "...right." Sadly, this is not one I can recommend but look forward to the authors next book.

I'm a big fan of BA Paris so I was really excited to be approved for her latest novel, The Prisoner.

The Prisoner tells the story of Amelie over two time periods; the present day where she is dragged from her home and kidnapped by persons unknown along with her husband - and the past, where she is left orphaned as a young adult after the death of her father and taken in by a kind group of strangers.

The story progresses well across both timelines however I did feel myself slightly drifting off during the initial 'present' chapters as Amelie was held with very little happening initially.

However, as the stort developed over both timelines, the tension started to grow and soon it was a real page turnen with a complex but exciting ending.

Thanks to Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Amelie is 17 years old and after the sudden death of her father she goes to London to look for work and a place to live.
She meets some people and they introduce her to Ned who offers her a job.
Events start to happen quickly and she is abducted and taken prisoner.
A fast paced thriller that kept me entertained.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is an entertaining easy read. Short chapters shift between the present and the past and kept me interested and engaged.

One criticism – this is set mostly in England. In England, we have car bonnets not hoods. Also we get hold of someone, we don't get ahold. Americanisms should be saved for the American market.

Overall, a good well-paced story with a satisfying end.

I love BA Paris but I didnt love this book I'm afraid. Found it slow going and hard to connect with characters, really wanted to enjoy it but felt like I was just slogging on because I had to finish it.

Having read all of the authors earlier books I was looking forward to reading this new one,I found the beginning a bit slow but I stuck with it and it did warm up but i found it not as enjoyable as her other books.
Saying that still one of my favourite authors so I'll look forward to the next book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for the ARC.

I don't want to spoil this book for anyone, so can't say much apart from it is a rollicking read that starts at a pace at doesn't let up!

Quite formulaic plot, but it works nevertheless and has enough to keep you guessing (although I did guess correctly!)

I started this novel one cold evening and finished it in the early hours, I really couldn't put it down!

The Prisoner by B A Paris NO SPOILERS
Published Date 3 November 2022
Book - 308 pages
Star rating - 3

I am not sure what to say about this book. I was intrigued on page one, less so by page 100. The protagonist, Amelie Lamont, was annoying and I disliked her character. in the story. Some readers may disagree.
My reason for 3-star rating is due to what I felt was a jagged plot. I felt disconnected throughout the story, and, for me, the writing didn't flow. It may not be the correct moment for me to read and would consider a re-read at some point.

For me, this was a disappointing novel read.

I WANT TO THANK NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNTY OF READING THIS BOOK IN RETURN FOR AN HONEST REVIEW

In the middle of the night newly married Amelie and Ned Hawthorpe are abducted from their home. Their captives keep the couple separated. Amelie is locked in a pitch black room with nothing more than a bare mattress and access to a bathroom for weeks. The kidnappers have demanded a ransom from Ned's wealthy father, however he's refusing to pay. As the days stretch on Amelie is determined to escape.

There is a blistering start to the story as we are instantly in the grips of the kidnapping. You feel the tension and the terror as Amelie awakes in the middle of the night and describes what is happening. Your interest is then immediately piqued by a couple of comments from Amelie. Her thought processes are "Grab the knife" which is hidden under her pillow and "I can outwit him; I've done it before". I needed to know why Amelie was sleeping with a knife under her pillow and what exactly she meant by having outwitted him before.

The pace of the opening doesn't let up until we are catapulted approximately four years into the past. Chapters then alternate between the terror of Amelie's captivity and her desperate attempts to escape with how she ended up alone in London at the age of sixteen. We learn that orphaned Amelie, living in hostels or on the streets was befriended by Carolyn who took her under her wing.

Thanks to the support of Carolyn and a couple of her friends Amelie is able to get her life back on track and eventually gets a job working for Ned Hawthorpe at his magazine. When Ned whisks her off to Los Angeles and offers her a business deal Amelie is a little awe struck but convinced she is fully in control, little does she realise the nightmare is about to begin - in more ways than one.

On more than one occasion I was convinced I knew where the story was going, only to have the rug pulled out from under me. It's fantastic when a thriller writer keeps you guessing. Up to the two-thirds mark this story had all the hallmarks of a superb thriller, then there was the introduction of a slightly "fairy-tale" element which spoilt the story for me. I fully appreciate this element was necessary for the revelations in the conclusion, I just wonder if those revelations could have been handled differently. Apologies if that sounds a little vague, trying to ensure my review is spoiler free.

I wanted to love this book as The Therapist remains one of my favourites and a book that I’ve gifted to lots of people. Unfortunately, I couldn’t warm to the plot or characters in the Prisoner. I found it a little far fetched and repetitive.
It won’t put me off this author though and I’m sure my thoughts on this book are a one off.

When B.A. Paris releases a new book I am always eager to read it as soon as possible. She produces fast paced novels that I normally read in one sitting due to the excitement. For me this one was a little below the high standard I normally enjoy and didn’t turn the pages quite so fast. Still a very good read but when you set the bar so high there are always likely to be slight disappointments.

Amelie lost her parents when she was a child in Paris but she was a survivor and rebuilt her life and married the handsome billionaire Jed Hawthorne. She now leads a very glamourous life that comes to a crashing halt when she is kidnapped, waking up in a darkened room. Who has abducted her and why?

I would like to thank both Netgalley and Hodder and Stoughton for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Amelie and her 'husband' Ned have been kidnapped. Kept in separate rooms this story follows their time in captivity and flicks backwards and forwards following a story line of how they got to be in this situation and wether they would escape.
I enjoyed this story and got through it pretty quick, wanting to know what happened. Amelie seemed to have a tragic past and I really wanted something good to happen to her. I don't want to give anything away but I enjoyed the ending and it left her final outcome very much to the imagination.
