I really enjoyed reading Gwyn and Wells’ perspectives in this second instalment of the Ex Hex series, while still hearing from Rhys and Vivi. I listened to the audiobook for this and honestly, it wasn’t great. The narrator herself was decent but the Welsh accent for the Penhallow boys was just…no.
I found The Kiss Curse to be…just ok. Not riveting, not terrible, but somewhere in between. If there is to be further books in this series I will probably stop here.
What this does well, however, is encompassing the Halloween vibes I was searching for when I picked up this book! Very atmospheric and spooky vibes while still having a fun romantic aura.
Also, I have to say I LOVE Sir Purrcival.
After reading and enjoying The Ex Hex last week I wanted to jump straight into the sequel. When I learnt that it was about Gwyn I was super excited as she was one of my favourite characters from the first book.
This book was just as good as the first. With fiery sarcastic Gwyn at the forefront I felt entertained as her and Wells battled it out to be top shop on the patch. The banter and sarcasm between these two characters was fun and flirty, making their steamy kiss only inevitable.
It was lovely to be back in Graves Glen and see a few familiar faces. We got to catch up with Vivi and Rhys but they didn’t overshadow the story. We also had a new tribe of baby witches looking to Gwyn for some mentoring. I thought Gwyn made an excellent tutor as she broke out of the traditions but treated the teens as budding witches rather than children. This budding tribe proved to be very useful in the story!
I can not possibly write this review without saying that Sir Percival was absolutely hilarious. I don’t know if it was the fantastic narration from Shannon McManus or that it was my sense of humour but I found myself giggling away every time the cat appeared. He may not have played a huge role in the story but he still stood out for me.
Erin Sterling once again upped the chemistry with this book and it certainly got hot at times! If you love and enemies to loves trope then this is a read for you, I was egging Gwyn and Wells on the whole time desperate to see them happy together. I’d now like to see a book that features Bowen, the other brother. A trilogy has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?
Was looking forward to this one since The Ex Hex! It did not disappointing I loved the characters, setting and the enemies to lovers. Defo worth the 5*.
A cosy, feel good romance with a mystical twist. I have been eagerly awaiting this book after falling in love with The Ex Hex and this did not disappoint. I actually enjoyed this book more as I preferred the characters. Hopefully there will be another book out soon!
Absolutely loved this. Perfect start for spooky season.
Light hearted, fast paced enemies to lovers. So well written. Had me giggling in places.
A fan for those who love witchy books
I LOVED this, I LOVE Erin sterling, I need all of her future books right now!
Just exactly as I wanted it to be, a rollicking witchy delight,
I just adore the snarky back and forth, and the antics of her main characters.
The chemistry between Wells and gwyn is (for lack of a better word) magical, the interactions hilarious and I just loved being back in the town where the ex hex took place,
This book has all the things I love about it’s predecessor but is different enough to still keep me entertained and wanting to know more!
The readers voice was perfect for the role in my opinion, the level and tone excellent,
Very very enjoyable to listen to!
Thankyou NetGalley for a copy of this audiobook in return for an honest review!
Enjoyable but not necessarily very well written. It was humorous and the plot was engaging but parts of the plot were predictable and it felt a little flat overall.
This book was so much fun! I loved meeting characters, both new and old. This book was a breeze to fly through, and so entertaining.
I was a huge fan of The Ex Hex and this was a wonderful follow up. The audiobook really brings the story to life.
Review for NetGalley:
What a great book to read in the lead up to Halloween - like The Ex Hex, The Kiss Curse is a really cute blend of romance, spice and banter, with a dash of witchy antics.
If you’re looking for a fluffy October read, I’d thoroughly recommend both books in this series.
As an audiobook listener there is one notable issue - the Welsh accent. If you’re familiar with the accent you may find the narration distracting as it veers between Scottish/Irish while voicing Wells.
Really enjoyable follow up to The Ex Hex focusing on two other characters. I really loved Gwen and Wells as main characters, found their story arc funny and interesting and liked the conflicts thrown in. Audio narrator was spot on with this book and would listen to others narrated by her.
Yet again Erin Sterling gives us a spooky romance to settle down with this Halloween season!
The Kiss Curse take us back to Graves Glen - this time to follow the love/hate relationship of Gwyn Jones and Llewellyn 'Wells' Penhallow (Vivi's cousin and Rhys' brother for those ex hex fans out there). If you love a good enemies to lovers then this is the perfect book for you, it has dual pov, great banter and a little bit of spice.
The narration of this audiobook was also great, showing the different accents between the Jones and the Penhallows that you don't get to experience normally, and Sir Purrcival had me crying with laughing.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this one, I read the first book last year and it was super cute and easy reading, and this sequel definitely did not disappoint. It is the perfect romance to take you out of the summer beachy reads, into a more autumnal scene. My only criticism was some of the Welsh accents were maybe a bit off, bit otherwise it was great.
The Kiss Curse was a sweet and magical romance that is perfect for the upcoming Autumn and Spooky Season. It was such a cute and cosy enemies-to-lovers that had me under its spell, just from reading the premise.
Gwyn Jones was a fabulous main character! She was smart, sassy and did I mention she's a witch?! I loved how confident she was and how she used her magic. I loved that she was willing to help a bunch of younger witches and nurture them. Her relationship with them was so sweet and amusing, I really enjoyed how they all connected with one another. The other special someone in Gwyn's life had me absolutely obsessed! Sir Purrcivil, the talking cat, was so cute and funny! I fell in love with him immediately!
The real love interest on the other hand was not my type. I found Wells to be quite uptight and dare I say a little boring. Whilst I enjoy a good grumpy love interest, something about Wells just didn't work for me. I enjoyed reading from his perspective and seeing how his feelings progressed, but his attitude wasn't always my favourite.
His chemistry with Gwyn though... I did enjoy that very much! Their flirting and teasing was exceptional! At times I found myself blushing when things began to heat up between them and I loved their interactions. The miscommunications did start to niggle at me by the end of the book, but I did love the two of them together.
Now the selling point of this novel has to be Graves Glen. If you love everything Halloween, then you're going to fall in love with this small town. Graves Glen was written so beautifully and it was so incredibly atmospheric! I found myself desperate to visit and see all the cute Halloween shops and partake in the local festival. It was just so cosy and inviting, I couldn't get enough! I'm still thinking about that little Halloween town and I'm desperate to revisit Graves Glen.
My only other problem with this book was that it felt like there were two different stories occurring at the same time. We had the romance between Gwyn and Wells, which was swoon-worthy, but then we also had a witchy and paranormal mystery. I would have much preferred if these had been two separate stories because at times it felt like there was a lot going on. I felt like neither plot really got the attention it deserved. The ending also felt very rushed to me, which just left me feeling a little disoriented and disappointed with this novel hence the 3 stars.
Another fantastic read from Erin Stirling.
The story was absolutely perfect, I loved the Mc, the relationship development was perfect.
One of my favourite reads of the year.
Okay, I love, love, LOVED this! I really enjoyed The Ex Hex when I read it last year but stepping back into Graves Glen with Gwyn and Wells, well I knew I would like it but I was unprepared for how much I loved it! I listened to this on audio from netgalley and I was listening in every spare moment I had. I flew through it!
The story follows both Gwyn and Wells in this dual POV enemies to lovers romance. It’s set in the mystical town of Graves Glen where Gwyn runs her own shop with all sorts of magical bits and bobs for tourists. Wells heads back to Graves Glen to re-establish his family’s ties to the town, setting up shop directly opposite Gwyn reigniting her old disdain for him.
Despite the dual POV, the narrator is the same throughout and I thought they were really versatile and enjoyed their narration. I didn’t want to put this down and will definitely be re-reading it again in the probably not so distant future.
It has romance, chemistry and is chock full of good humoured banter between Gwyn and Wells but also with the other characters - Gwyn’s baby witches. I was completely unsuspecting of where the story ended up going and just when you think you know what’s going to happen there’s a wild coven on the loose!
If you’ve not read either of these books make a start this autumn season and start with The Ex Hex to really enjoy the duo. I really, really hope we’re going to get a third book - there is a third Penhallow brother after all!
A cute autumnal read. This is fun and quirky magical romance that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Sadly the narrator was not for me, the English accents were very Mary Poppins and I have no idea where in England were they were supposed to be from, but they were definitely some kind of English, certainly not Welsh as intended. I wouldn’t have minded if they were a consistent dialect, but they were not.
I would suggest getting the e-book rather than the audiobook of this.
3.5 stars! I had to read this after loving The Ex Hex in January and it’s the perfect time of year for this witchy book. I really enjoyed it, I love a good enemies to lovers story and this was great. I definitely enjoyed the first book more because it felt like the conclusion of the book happened so fast and didn’t seem to have much detail, but it was a good story all the same. The biggest reason that this book wasn’t my favourite was the accent of the audiobook narrator. The male characters in the book are mainly all welsh and the narrator’s accent was far from that and was quite off-putting. I think this has made me realise that when it comes to romance, I need to read the physical book and do the voices in my head. All in all, I thought this was a fab autumn read and would definitely recommend for a fun romance.
I listened to this as an audiobook and I thought it was so good! I was so excited to read in the perspective of Gwen, she is such a great character. I loved the way the characters were given their voice in this book by the narrator. I could tell how Wells was a grumpy and Gwyn was definitely a sunshine. It also includes the enemies to lovers trope as well!
This book was definitely high on my release list for this year after reading The Ex Hex and I wasn’t disappointed. The plot was based around Gwen and Wells’ romance but with a hint of strange things happening in the town. I loved reading about this pair, they were so funny and always trying to outdo each other. The other characters in this book were great! We got to hear from Vivi and Rhys from the first book and obviously Sir Purrcival. I absolutely loved the voice the narrators gave Sir Purrcival, it was great!
I enjoyed listening to this book, I love the autumn, witchy vibe. Both this book and the first one are perfect reads for this time of year! I do think these can be read as standalones but I highly recommend reading both of them to get a feel of Graves Glen, the setting of the book. I feel like I prefer this one a little more than the first because of the enemies to lovers trope and their steamy romance. Although I did love the curse from the first book.
I adored this. After enjoying The Ex Hex last year, I was highly anticipating Gwyn's book. Her and Well's are fantastic and Sir Purcivil really is the star of the show. The Baby Witches are also outstanding. I loved the Supernatural reference and found myself cracking up with laughter through a lot of this book. I really do hope there are more books from Graves Glenn as I adore this town. Kind of hoping we might get a book from Bowen.
Massive 5 stars from me, perfect autumn witchy read
