“Every now and then, we all need to be rescued.”
The Lonely Hearts Rescue combines queerness, found family, and a love for animals to bring about three sweet sapphic romances. These novellas are nice easy reads, and often so relatable. The musings and mutterings of so many characters about their queerness, their attraction to a love interest, their fear of being a bad fur-parent, and their millenialism, made me chuckle.
If anything, I might say that the novellas are a bit formulaic. Each involves two women who at first glance seem incompatible, and each features a newly adopted pet that changes their lives. Besides that, this is a super fun read.
I really enjoyed this book! I thought the romance in this was adorable and I loved the main characters.
lesbians and animals . had high hopes...
I simply didn't vibe with the stories. The first was okay but nothing special. second one had a "character development arc" that was just wild to me and grated me. third one starts with, frankly, animal abuse and i was at a point with the book where i didn't care to go through with it
1st story - 3stars
fun.
2nd story - 2stars
being a lil' snarky doesnt warrant an AA like transformation.
3rd story - dnf
very much disliked how the MC agreed fostering when she was completely not able to grasp basic concepts of being responsible for an animal.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this title.
I am not always a fan of novellas personally, but I very much enjoyed The Lonely Hearts Rescue. There are 3 novellas each about a different pet that is rescued and all three are well done and sweet. I believe animal lovers especially those that have rescued their pets will really appreciate this collection of stories. Personally, each dog I've rescued has had such an immense impact on my life. And while losing them is always one of the hardest things us pet owners ever experience, it never fails to surprise me how much our hearts can grow and expand to make more room for another 4 legged family member. I really loved these stories and will certainly read more from these authors in the future!
4 Stars!
The Lonely Hearts Rescue is a collection of three novellas centered around the same animal rescue, each featuring its own sapphic romance. If you're in the mood for something lighthearted and cute, this would probably be a good book for you.
Though the first novella "Something About You" didn't feel particularly interesting to me, I especially enjoyed seeing Faith and Del's relationship blossom in "Test of Faith", the second novella. Faith is one of those characters who's a mess when we meet her and has a lot of defenses up, to the point she can be fairly mean (and she tends to blurt out inappropriate things). I personally like seeing those types of characters find something that makes them learn to be vulnerable and lower their defenses, and getting to see that they have a heart of gold underneath.
Overall, a little awkward at times but mostly good.
I really enjoyed the premise of the story from the beginning. saving pets and exploring sapphic love along the way? sign me up!
whereas the first half of all three stories had me hooked, I slogged through the second half of the first and third stories.
the second was definitely my favourite with the best mix of character and plot
thank you to netgalley and bold strokes for providing me this ARC
Such a cute read. If you are a lover of animals and want to feel all warm and fuzzy inside, pick this book up.
This book has cosy written all over it. It's so warm and full of love. Revolving around the Lonely Hearts Rescue Centre, in a world where everyone seems to be gay (or at least everyone adopting or working at lonely hearts anyway) each story starts with a person agreeing to adopt or foster a pet, only then to meet the woman of their dreams along the way. It was simple and perfect and made for great reading.
As it's a animal book, obviously I have to dedicate a paragraph on the animals in the book! Though I felt there could be more animal content (because who doesn't need more animal content?), the stories were full of cute moments between the animals and their owners. I would have liked to see more of Apollo the cat's rehabilitation, but Buffy the Cav cross and Cotton the dachshund (what better name is there than cotton??) featured a lot in their respected stories and there were moments that I really loved.
The romance was simple, I could have done with more conflict in the first story as it all seemed a little easy, but with three short stories in a three hundred page book, there was not much room for elaborate stories. I liked all three main characters and their love interests, so I was fairly easy to please.
Basically if you're LGBTQ+ (or just like reading about gay characters) and love animals then you couldn't really find a more perfect book to read.
Very cute collection of sapphic romance stories! Two out of the three worked for me and one I just could not get into.
This was a nice book to get through for a few evening since it was short stories, I'd read a couple here and there. Very heartwarming.
Will this group of three short stories blow your literary mind? No, but what they will do is leave you with a warm feeling in your heart and a smile on your face. A lovely little collection of stories of how pets can bring you happiness and introduce you to your next romantic partner.
It was a fun read, I loved that the animals played such a big role in the stories and also allowed me to learn a bit about how this centres work. The characters seem well rounded, social anxiety and dealing with other aspects of mental health were present which I'm always happy to read. 3 separate stories centred round the lonely hearts animal rescue centre. All the stories are worth reading. How both people and animals find their lifelong partners. Humorous and sad in parts.
As someone, who just adopted her own little fur baby, I knew I had to read this collection. They are three novellas and each is centered about a rescued animal. All three stories very so cute, lighthearted and heartwarming, that I cannot recommend this enough to everyone, whose heart beats for animals!
A lovely collection of short stories, I rlly loved these short queer stories revolving around the rescue, they were all so beautiful and heart warming, I rlly enjoyed it !!!
What more could a woman want than a book about rescue animals and queer romances? The writing was okay, nothing mind blowing, but I enjoyed the stories and the characters. I felt that the story of Del and Faith and Buffy was the strongest out of the three. There was a lot of insta-love, or what felt like the beginnings of insta-love, but these are short stories, so they couldn't really do a slow burn for the most part. Cute none the less. Thanks to Netgally and Bold Strokes Books for the ARC.
When a hurricane hits the Gulf Coast, the animals at the Lonely Hearts Rescue Shelter need love, and so do the humans who adopt them.
Something About You by Morgan Lee Miller. After rescuing a cat stranded in the hurricane, animal control officer Reese Shepard is adamant about finding shy, timid Apollo the best forever home. When she discovers Apollo giving cheek rubs to Hannah Marsh, Reese’s high school crush, she’s captivated by her all over again.
Force of Nature by Missouri Vaun. Rebekah Hawks has stepped in to help with hurricane disaster relief. Challenges are no match for Rebekah. At least until she agreed to foster an impossible dog. Rebekah has no choice but to seek the aid of handsome local dog trainer Rory Maclaren. But who is training whom?
Test of Faith by Nell Stark. Rescuing a dog is a dream come true for Faith Kincaid—and a chance to prove to herself that she really can, in the words of her therapist, “commit to commitment.” When Faith takes her new best friend, Pinoe, to the vet, she can’t stop staring at Dr. Delphine Wu. Del is completely out of Faith’s league. Or is she?
These were such cute stories and i'm so happy i read this book as a whole
This collection of three love stories dealing with love a new found furry child and finding love on a human level is a very comfy smile friendly book that gives three different stories from three different authors.
We have three stories that only connection is the rescue but no interchange between them. We have three different authors with each having their own unique writing style but they do complement each other. Each story felt like a fluffy duvet on a cold day sitting next to the fire and reading about the joys of love.
The characters are well developed and although each story is very singular they do all have a similar plotting dealing with finding love on a human level. The pet aspects of the stories really shine through and each of the authors are able to capture the animal characteristics within the pets being adopted. The human characters are very hallmark television film and that is not a criticism as I quite enjoy those on a cold Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea.
The only negative is that it would be nice if there was some cross pollination of characters with cameos of each other characters to give the whole book a feeling of cohesiveness in a volume but saying that if viewed as a short story collection, then it does work on that level.
Comfortable, passes a smile in a world where love conquers all, you can not go very wrong. I highly recommend this.
The Lonely Hearts Rescue is a cute collection of 3 novels set in the same universe. Or so I thought. The only thing they had in common was the shelter so it was a slight disappointment that the 3 stories did not connect as much as I would have liked.
I did enjoy each story in its way although as a cat person the first one was my favourite. I am also a sucker for long lost acquaintance turns into love interest. The shared history added that extra layer for me.
An ARC was provided via Netgalley in return for an honest review.
The lonely hearts rescue is a series of novellas filled with adorable pet rescue stories as well as the sweetest romances. Each story was centered around reducing a pet after a disastrous hurricane strikes.
.
I loved each of the stories so much. and thought they were all exceptionally written, and all of the animal stories had my heart absolutely melt. I absolutely flew through this novella collection and would definitely love to see any/all of these as full-length novels because I just couldn't get enough of these sweet characters and their stories. overall I had THE BEST time reading these, especially because I had my kittens curled up at my feet as I was reading.
"The Lonely Hearts Rescue" is a pleasant, cute, and quick read. Considering the stories were novellas, I understand the pacing was meant to be faster. But I still feel like relationships were a bit rushed and could be fleshed out just a bit more. While the plot was pretty straight-forward, it'll be perfect for anyone who's looking for a short romance read. I enjoyed all three stories in this anthology. "Test of Faith" was my favourite out of the collection.
