Great selection of important and memorable World Cup moments, with big photographs to go with them. The type of collection that makes a great gift or borrow from the library
As a huge football fan who is completely disillusioned with the current farce of a World Cup in Qatar, it was nice to be able to take a trip back through history and appreciate the great moments that have occurred in World Cups passed. Some of my earliest memories are football related and I have vivid memories from each World Cup from 2002 when I was just 5, through to 2018 and England's oh so close run to the semi finals. As a kid the World Cup was always a magical occasion, it is a shame what it has come to, but the older memories are always there to be looked back on and this book does a wonderful job bringing them back to life.
The Times newspaper has collected the best of the reports from the very first football World Cup final to put together a complete history of the best bits of World Cup history. Divided into sections of the most exciting matches, best players and controversial points, this makes a fascinating read for any football fan. Paired with stunning full colour photography, this is a collector's book.
The concise but not sensational journalism expected from The Times reporters, ensures this a worthy and timeless account. These reports are from a variety of journalists who have written for the paper over the years, and this accounts for the variety of writing, They are, of course, the one hundred highlights of the World Cup, without the boring bits. Bliss.
There are events that occurred before I was born and it is good to read about the great countries of the past. It's always fun to read about the one time England won! For the events and players I do remember, it's a pleasant bit of nostalgia to be reminded of Cameroon's Roger Milla's dancing celebrations, the skills of the Brazilians that were always so colourful, the technical play of West Germany, the Total Football of Holland. Bobby Moore, Johan Cruyff, Maradonna and Pele are all deserving to be part of football's history.
Published in time for the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which this time encompasses Christmas as well, this is a bright book and will make a great gift, especially the hardback version.
The digital version with individual pages doesn't show full photos. With good quality print and size this will be an excellent pictoral record.
Less a star - whilst the content and text context is good, and the combinations refresh memories, some sections seem a little mixed in selection. I appreciate there may be rights issues. However, I can think of plenty of shots not included.
All that said a good book, could be better given the cost.
This is a lovely pictorial book which gathers together 100 of the best moments from previous World Cups as reported in the pages of The Times.
Nostalgia rules as you relish the memories of so many half forgotten moments of genius - or even the dark arts of the game.
The writing is as wonderful as you would expect and I loved reading the lush words of Geoffrey Green again.
The perfect present for all football fans impatiently waiting for the next tournament to begin.
Highly recommended.
