A powerful collection of poetry from Sophia Thakur that deserves slow, careful reading.
This is a collection that I frequently revisit, frequently enjoy and savour. Sophia Thakur has a powerful voice. Wearing My Mother's Heart is a poignant, powerful collection of poetry - I've purchased the paper copy to keep too.
Whilst this is a great book for poetry lovers and those looking for female inspiration, I personally found it difficult to get into although I can appreciate the sentiments that have been poured into it and the quality of the writing. Whilst I am sure that there are people who will love it, I'm not sure how much of a market we have here in Costa Rica, especially from our store which specialises in and is renowned for children's books.
A lovely collection of poetry rooted in love, family, history and culture. I loved reading this collection. It captured a lot while having a lot of heart and feeling. There were definitely some lines that stood out to me, as I'm sure a lot of this collection will to others. I think it speaks to a lot of people, a lot of women. I read these quite quickly. Some poems are long, some just a few lines but they are all as profound as each other.
Thank you Netgalley and Walker Books for the ARC of this new poetry collection by Sophia Thakur. It is nice to see a strong, female, ethnic minority voice being represented through these poems which touch on complex themes of love, family, race, multiculturalism, religion, etc. Thakur's tone is conversational and her straightforward, sharp diction speaks directly to the reader without using overly elaborate or flowery poetic language. I do think that hearing these poems performed out loud would be a far more powerful and memorable experience than just reading the text from a book. The empowering, inspiring, and touching messages in these short poems make this collection a great one for sharing out loud with a young audience, especially teenage girls.
With poetry being one of my favourite books to have for children to dip into, I was excited to read this. It is a beautifully written collection of poems suitable for older children with great discussion points being raised.
