Wow what a fast pace fun read. I was sucked in right from the beginning.
Talk about you can't judge a book by its cover, I love the cover but I came in thinking this might be just a silly read like Finlay Donovan is killing it. However it is not but I do love that it isn't. It stands independently on its own.
This story is basically inspired by the #metoo movement and what would happen if a woman started Dexter Style killing men who are sexual predators. It does remind me a lot of Dexter, as there are many points in this book that we are following her living a normal life. Being a rich influencer on Instagram and finding new love..
This book is dark and I'd say there are definitely sexual assault triggers. The murders done by Kitty can be a bit gruesome. But none of it took away from my enjoyment of the book. Although dark, there is a bunch of dark humor mixed in.
I'd recommend this book to people who enjoyed the show Dexter and looking for a woman's take on it.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ digital for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.
Closer to publication date october 12 2022I will post my review to my Instagram page The.floofs.booknook
Kitty Collins is a rich, pill popping, vodka drinking, famous Instagram influencer who also likes to kill men, bad men. If you are squeamish, this book is not for you as the disposal of all the bodies often involves meat grinders. At first I thought this would be like 'My sister the serial killer', which was well written and tongue in cheek. This was more of a fun, light read, that's pretty implausible.
First, that she could physically maneuver and kill all these very large men. Granted, she does drug them first. Second, that she would get away with it. And third that no one close to her would notice. But then someone does. That's when it starts getting interesting. Then she falls in love. Will this keep her from killing again, or will she still have the itch to rid society of all the pedofiles, rapists, and misogynists?
Kitty is a likeable character, well developed, and just has these urges. Unfortunately most of her friends are vapid, hangerons, It would be nice to see a few of them more well developed.
There is a pretty good twist at the end that surprised me, as I thought I'd figured out who the stalker was. And the ending leaves Kitty open for a sequel or a franchise of this character, ala Findlay Donovan.
I'll be watching Katy Brent to see what she does next!!
4+
Meet Kitty Collins, social media influencer (yawns, me and sometimes Kitty!) lover of all good things in life, bit of a snob (that’s being kind) but knows she is and accidental killer and before you know it, whoops, there goes another one. These are men who you could argue (maybe) that deserve it, liars, cheaters, predators, misogynists, so it’s not really murder is it? Is it???? Kitty justifies it by believing she’s reclaiming the night but she has got one other concern - who is the stalker that is sending her very disturbing messages?
It’s possible I’m not necessarily the target audience for this one as I’m a bit long in the tooth for the Insta Influencer malarkey but that being said, I didn’t half enjoy it! Whilst it makes good points about Male ‘entitlement’ it doesn’t do so in a preachy way, it actually makes more of an impact via the darkly funny, ironic even sarcastic tone the author strikes. Despite her many flaws (apart from the killing obviously) I do like Kitty and her self deprecating tone. She’s intriguing with a great mix of personality traits in a bit of a Villanelle kind of a way. You can totally see too, the influence of Made in Chelsea with some of her friends - I rather enjoy that too!
It’s gruesome in places, again channel Killing Eve but because it’s so well paced you keep reading on partly in horror and partly in admiration- lol!!! It’s a quick and highly entertaining and you read on in anticipation of what Kitty will get up to next. I love the ending - go Kitty!!
This is a great mix of humour albeit the dark kind, there are weird disturbing vibes from the online stalker to say nothing of the threat from some people Kitty and her friends encounter on their nights out. This is a really good debut and an author to watch in the future.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HQ for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
Thank you to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
When i first saw this book, im not going to lie, i knew just from the title that i wanted to read it. And im glad i did!
The main character Kitty Collins, is a social media influencer, which normally doesnt really float my boat, but she was actually a really lovable character. I love the way she thinks and what she stands for. This book was funny in places but the actual moral of the story really made me think. Im not sure if thats a good or a bad thing, but as much as i 100% agree with Kitty, i wont be following in her footsteps, or will i?!
Definitely an author to watch out for as i did extremely enjoy this read
Absolutely adored this book! I loved the dark humour, I loved the storyline, I loved the main character, I just loved everything!! It had such sensitive topics included but was balanced so well with the humour involved. I was constantly trying to figure out who was the stalker was so I loved the mystery behind it too. It was a really thought provoking read that had so many elements and so many layers to it. It was so gripping too I finished it within a couple of days. The main character just reeled me straight in with her honesty and her humour. Absolutely recommend it and loved it
This snarky book was a wild ride full of dark humor and immediately brought to mind a female Dexter. Kitty Collins is an influencer who becomes fed up with the way that men in society can treat women like objects and get away with it. After an accident one night leads to the death of a man who wouldn’t take no for an answer, she goes on a vigilante killing spree. She does have rules she insists on following, like men only and only the bad ones.
Trigger warnings here for plenty of talk about rape and sexual assault. These are of course heavy topics, but the book itself is mostly a light, funny read. I breezed through it with its short chapters and entertaining dialogue. You definitely won’t be bored reading this one!
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for the ARC in exchange for my unbiased opinion!
If you’re a fan of the ‘Sweet Pea’ series or ‘Killing Eve’, this book is for you. Engaging, addictive and thought-provoking, this read has it all!
Kitty Collins seeks revenge for women targeted by sexual predators, and although her method is somewhat unorthodox, I couldn’t help but like her! Her reasonings for her crimes are very plausible, but murder is murder, right?
Whether you agree with Kitty’s actions or not, there is a profound message within these pages of the ongoing fear that women face within our society. The author explores the possibilities of women fighting back, and I found this to be incredibly empowering.
An excellent book for a book club read as I’m sure readers will have their own opinions on this. Please note the theme of this read may be upsetting for some.
Overall, a disturbing yet entertaining read. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
How to Kill Men and Get Away with It by Katy Brent does have an intriguing premise and feeds into a popular genre of revenge fiction - where women are the protagonists seeking revenge. Think of Promising Young Women, Villanelle, Dexter and you are on the right track.
The humour os particularly track and there are some funny moments but I did struggle with this book. There is no doubt that Kitty's victims were utterly horrible but they were also one-dimensional characters and it is difficult to cheer on Kitty when she murders without any understanding of a situation - such as killing because of rude comments made online.
I wanted to support her but by the end of the novel, the ending did not take me by surprise and I was happy to finish.
I think that this book could well have broad appeal and I was just the wrong audience.
An interesting one. The title and cover both suggest a light-hearted romp and this IS written in that way - the characters are not well fleshed out (excuse the pun) - apart from Kitty they're very one-dimensional - but in a way you don't really care - you just want to find out what happens next! Having said that, and although I might recommend it to a friend or two who wants something not too serious to read, I have a slight reservation about the fact that it's somehow OK to publish a book about a woman randomly killing men (because, although Kitty selects her targets carefully, we know mistakes can be made), but I can imagine that there'd be outrage if a similar book was published about a man killing women because he didn't approve of the way they behaved towards other men.
I am tempted to now go back and read Helen Zahavi's 'Dirty Weekend' which was also about a woman taking her revenge on men.
I had such high hopes for this just from the title alone, but oh my god this even exceeded my expectations. It's gritty, and dark but then has this lightness and humour about it that makes you just fall in love with Kitty despite knowing she's a bad apple really. I absolutely breezed through this. I definitely think this will be the book of the autumn once everyone reads it. SO SO good
How to Kill Men and Get Away With It by Katy Brent
Have you ever walked home at night, keys in hand, ready to throw a punch in self-defence? That’s how it all started. The killing spree, I mean.
I sort of tripped into this role… Literally. The first one was following me. That guy from the nightclub who wouldn’t leave me alone
A joy to read , dark , funny and oh so un pc . What's not to love ! Loved just how much the act of finding a man ( or waiting for him to find her ) give the opportunity to scratch that itch. !
Loved it.
I really wanted to like this book, but I didn't unfortunately. I felt like the characters were too two-dimensional and not believable. Even if you were able to suspend belief to think that Kitty could get away with her actions, it still seemed too "tidy" and unbelievable. I think other works in this genre (How to Kill Your Family, Promising Young Women) take this exact premise and do it better. I also took a slight issue with how the male characters were portrayed - it was pretty black and white. Overall, it was a fairly fun romp but just not something I'd recommend.
5 stars! This was such a fun and quick read! I loved Kitty, she was such an interesting character, and following her was a blast. Many thanks to NetGalley and HQ for the ARC!
Well this book!!! I randomly requested this when I saw it on netgalley and my choice did not disappoint, I absolutely loved it, I couldn't put it down. This book is definately dark and graphic but mixed with humour. I found this was such an engrossing book, I kept wanting to know what happens with the main character Kitty Collins. I would highly recommend thid fun, quirky book, fingers crossed Katy writes a sequel
Huge thank you to netgalley & HQ for approving my request in exchange for my honest review
This feels strange to say, but this was just such a fun book to read! It’s fast paced, addictive, and filled with a mix of dark humour and social commentary. I liked Kitty - she’s a very wealthy Influencer, vegan, and she has a dark side….she kills men. To be fair, her targets are those that attack women, and with some of the stuff in the news, she’s got plenty to choose from as she sets out to right some wrongs. I liked seeing the contrast in Kitty’s life; on one hand, we have a wealthy socialite, but in the other hand, bloody murder. This was such an engrossing book - I just wanted to keep going to see what was going to happen to Kitty. I can’t wait to see what Katy Brent does next!
Jesus Christ, this book. I absolutely loved it. It made me uncomfortable and sad and frustrated and angry, but I loved it. If you enjoyed the movie Promising Young Woman, you will like this one. Dark, graphic, irreverent and raw, this book is a lot. It will make you think about rape culture and being a woman in this world that is not built to keep us safe. The title is pretty self explanatory, but Kitty Collins only kills the worst of the worst of men. Well, mostly. I found Kitty really compelling. Kitty had a lot to unpack and process and hers was a truly complex journey. I can’t say I agree with all of her methods and decisions, but I certainly understand how she arrived to them. There were a lot of twists and turns and eerie suspense so it was perfect for this time of year. There are A LOT of possible triggers in this book (listed beneath the review) so make sure you’re in the right headspace to read this one. If you do, I think you’ll be in for a wild ride of dark humor, witty writing and a very fascinating and morally grey female MC. I will absolutely be reading more of Brent’s work in the future. Especially if there’s a sequel…
TW: sexual assault, mentions of animal death, murder, violence, rape, mentions of eating disorders, drug use & abuse
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for an advanced digital reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.
Kitty is a rich influencer who spends her time brunching around Chelsea with her friends, she's a twisted likeable lead with an interesting hobby...
This felt fresh and different, a really fun read easy to demolish in one sitting.
4 Stars,
ARC from NetGalley - thank you!
I really liked this! It took me a while to get into the book, and up till about 3/4 in, I wasn’t certain on the motivations/background which made it a bit harder to feel invested. However! I stormed through this. It reminded me of How to Kill Your Family in the tone, and Promising Young Women in the story line. Finding out after that Made in Chelsea was part of the inspiration was fascinating too! It’s a bit heavily in places and definitely gory but manages to be pacy - not dwelling on the violence for too long. Big recommend!
Absolutely gripping. Laugh out loud funny and a Made-In-Chelseaesque herorine that you cannot help but love. You route for her no matter how gruesome the killings get (and some of them are shocking! ) I couldn't help but picture her as Villanelle in my head.
Katy Brent's search history was probably very interesting when writing this. 😂
Main character aside, there are a number of supporting people who help make this book what it is. I won't name names, as this book has many a twist along the way and I don't want to spoil. The whole story is a vivid, technicolour delight, it jumped from the pages and played like a film in my head. An adaptation of this would be brilliant, if handled by the right team.
Thanks Netgalley and HQ Digital for the ARC
How to Kill Men and Get Away With It is a rollercoaster ride of a book. I didn’t dislike it and I am glad I read it but at the same time I just didn’t like Kitty. She has a privileged life but apparently it’s never enough and she wants more. Whilst I understood her motivations for murder, the cold way the author describes them (in graphic detail) really didn’t endear Kitty to me. It’s a shame because I feel like if I like the main character of a book I root for their success. And in this case I just wanted Kitty to get caught so it would finally be over.
