A bit of cosy crime on the Thames! Judith, Suzie and Becks are back and once again get involved in a mystery. This time it's a locked room mystery and they are baffled. To make matters worse, Tamika's boss is back from the sick and has demoted her to a desk.
Suzie now has a radio show and Becks is being mysterious.
I love this series as I don't live far from Marlow and can pick the places quite well.
More please.

On the eve of his wedding, Sir Peter Bailey is found crushed to death under a cabinet in his office. Is it a terrible accident or something else? As the office was locked from inside the police conclude that he committed suicide. Amateur detectives, Judith, Suzy and Becks think otherwise.

Highly entertaining with terrific characters and a great plot, I raced through Death Comes to Marlow and would recommend it very highly.

Many thanks to NetGalley and HQ Stories for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Perfect for fans of Richard Osman and locked room mysteries! This story involves 3 older ladies who have experience solving mysteries, who now get involved in a murder. This is what I’d call a cozy murder mystery as there’s no foul language or violence really, and the reader doesn’t feel the need to be jumping at every sound after reading it. This book is great for readers of all ages, and is thoroughly enjoyable. I believe this is part of a series of books, but can be read as a standalone, so look out for the others in the series if you liked this one

Brilliant read! Great characters and plot and exceptional read. How was the murder committed in a locked room, in plain sight of the pre wedding guests?
There are lots of twists as Judith, Suzie and Becks investigate who of the guests had motive, in their lovable way.
Highly recommend to all cosy mystery fans!

Death Comes to Marlow is the second book of the crime-busting gang from Thorogood's bestselling The Marlow Murder Club,
They are faced with an impenetrable locked room mystery in this page-turning slice of cosy crime.

Judith, Suzie and Becks – AKA The Marlow Murder Club return after the events of last years crime fighting..

The most exciting thing on the horizon is the upcoming wedding of Marlow neighbour , Sir Peter Bailey, to his nurse, Jenny Page. Sir Peter is having a party at his grand mansion on the river Thames, not far from Judith’s house the day before the wedding, and Judith having been invited just the day before by Sir Peter on the phone takes Becks and Susie along with her for a good look at the big house as well as a bit of free champagne.
But during the party, with a garden full of guests, there's a crash from inside the house, and when the Marlow Murder Club rush to investigate, they are shocked to find the groom-to-be crushed to death in his study by a falling cabinet.
The study was locked from the inside, the only key was in Sir Peter’s pocket, so the police don't consider the death suspicious. But Judith disagrees and as far as she is concerned Sir Peter was murdered. She convinces Policewoman Tanika to look into it with them but when her boss comes back off sick leave and takes over the case he doesn’t think it is murder as they have to investigate on their own.

This is a lighthearted and fun book . Very enjoyable.

Brilliant brilliant book.
It was catchy, funny, witty, well written and the characters are all strong female leads. This was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
Really enjoyable and really a brilliant read.
Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

After reading the first in the series I was delighted to receive my copy of Death Comes to Marlow.

Back again with our lovely crime fighting trio and this time with a locked room mystery with lots of little twists and turns and a great ending.

While I really did enjoy this book I didn't love it as much as the first in the series but I will certainly read the third!

I was absolutely thrilled to get a copy of this book from NetGalley, I loved the first book and couldn’t wait to read this.
It did not disappoint, Judith, Becks and Suzie return in this book and jump straight into investigating the sudden death of Sir Peter Bailey on the day before his marriage to his personal nurse Jenny.
Most believe it was accidental but the Marlow Murder club trio do not!
Lots of suspects, lots of twists and turns and plenty of fun along the way.
Thank you to NetGalley for a chance to read this in return for an honest review, and honestly I loved it!!! ❤️

I adore classic cosy crime novels as such I was over the moon to get this ARC of the latest Marlow Murder Club novel, I believe this is second in the series. Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley

First I have to say I did enjoy this book but it didn’t keep me interested the way the first book did, I found while the story was interesting it dragged on with a lot faff that added nothing to the plot, character development or anything extra to the book. I know from the start who the killer was as it was clearly obvious I did hope I was wrong but I wasn’t, however how the murder was committed was ingenious and made up for the few lags.

Character wise I can’t say I really like any of the three main characters I feel all three ladies lack something and seem very 2D and I find them quite lazy stereotypes. I feel they all could be developed much with with a little bit more information of their background and personal life.

For me this a poor man Thursday’s Murder Club, fans of that series will like this book but not love it.
A solid three stars for the ending and setting

I will read the next in the series in hope it improves and captures a little of what the first book in the series had but for the second wasn’t up to much let hope it is third time lucky. I have long enjoyed the writers other work, I loved the death in paradise novels and highly recommend them.

Having enjoyed the first outing of Judith, Suzie and Becks, I was happy to receive the second in the series to review. For Judith, life is returning to normal. Although seventy eight, this involves wild swimming in the River Thames, in january, plus crossword puzzles and general curiosity about the world. So, when Sir Peter Bailey calls to invite her to a drinks party, before his marriage the next day, she decides to attend. She felt Sir Peter was trying to tell her something and, when he is found dead in a seemingly tragic accident, she decides to investigate with the help of her friends.

Detective Sergeant Tanika Malik is, to their delight, involved. However, when she is side-lined from the case it is up to the three friends to unravel a bizarre, locked room, mystery. There are family feuds, missing wills and odd behaivour from one of their own group to uncover, before the truth is finally revealed. This is an enjoyable crime novel, with fun characters and a slightly old-fashioned feel, which is not a criticism, but adds to the warmth of the storyline. Definitely a series I will continue. Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.

The follow up to last year’s The Marlow Murders, I found this somewhat more straining for credulity, with the three amateur detectives somehow being allowed levels of access to the police investigation that do not ring true. The central plot - a local worthy is killed by a falling piece of furniture during his pre-wedding party - is worthy of Christie but the book itself doesn’t live up to the comparison.

Overall, mildly diverting but I preferred the first and will likely not read a third.

Another cosy read from Thorogood. It was great to be back in the company of Judith, Suzie and Becks as they face another mystery - a body is found in a locked room. Plus who is Higginson and what’s going on with the crosswords? The conclusion was really well crafted.

I really enjoyed this one, however it didn’t top the first one for me.
I found the story quite gripping, at about halfway I realised who the murderer could be but I couldn’t work out how it was done.
When I found out I thought it was quite ingenious.
Hoping there is a 3rd one. Would highly recommend the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for giving me an E-arc

Controversial opinion alert: as much as I’ve enjoyed Richard Osman’s books (the first not so much but they vastly improve), I think Robert Thorogood’s cosy crime books are far superior. They have this sharpness about them, this preciseness, this natural-feeling about them, a quality you also get in Death in Paradise, which he also created.

It’s been nearly 18 months since I read the first book in this series and that’s a long time to remember characters and plots and whatnot. But Robert is so good at creating the familiar. Within minutes I’d settled back in, like a chair had been waiting for me. I knew who everyone was and how it related to the first one.

There’s something very Miss Marple about it. An unassuming old woman and her friends just going about their business, seemingly harmless, helping the police do their job. It’s simply marvellous.

I just couldn’t put it down. I read it in one sitting, eating into the night when I really wanted an early night, but I had to know who did it.

I think Judith is a wonderful character. Yes she’s a bit set in her ways, boisterous, a bit brash and full of herself, but all of that is wrapped up in this gorgeous, endearing old soul, and she carries the story marvellously. Then you have Suzie and Becks, also in the first book. They’re fab characters in their own ways and are great for Judith to work off. I think most readers, regardless of their age, can see themselves in one of the three main characters. Tanika, the police officer, is back, and I think she perfectly straddles her job and the law, with care and trust for these amateur sleuths. In this novel we meet Jenny, Sir Peter, Rosanna and Tristram. I imagine they’re only in this book and not in any future ones, but they’re given so much time and they are expertly woven into the story and the pre-existing characters.

This book had a number of secondary stories too. You’ve obviously got the main murder mystery element, but this one also gives Suzie her own brush with fame, and gives Becks a mysterious aura. It means the characters are more developed and each page is as thrilling as the previous one and the following one.

Sure, it stretches the truth a little. I mean, how much of what they can get away with legally is far more than I think would actually be allowed. But somehow, in this world he has created, it’s absolutely fine. We’re happy with it. It definitely has the essence of the golden age of crime novels, very Agatha Christie.

Overall, whilst I really enjoyed the first in the series, I loved this one even more. The characters are more familiar, the format is more familiar, and it’s just like returning home. I don’t know if he plans anymore books in the series but I sincerely hope he does. They’re some of the most entertaining murder mystery books I’ve read.

Judith, Becks and Suzie return in the follow-up to The Marlow Murder Club. After a swan-related incident, Judith returns home to find out that she has been invited to a cocktail party in celebration of the upcoming nuptials of Marlow grandee Sir Peter Bailey, and she has no intention of turning down the invitation! However, a peculiar puzzle manifests as Sir Peter turns up dead. Against the instincts of everyone around her, Judith is convinced that he was murdered - and sets out to find out who and why.

This is a hugely enjoyable sequel - I read the first one and enjoyed this one just as much! The characters have moved on from where we saw them last and this book feels like an evolution of their story. 5*.

Out in January, Death Comes to Marlow is the follow up to the witty, cosy mystery The Marlow Murder Club, which I read last year and adored! When my request for the sequel was approved, I was so happy and excited that I dived in straight away! So let's get into what I thought!

Death Comes to Marlow dives straight into the action, picking up not too long after where the first book ends. Judith, Becks, Suzie and Tanika find themselves once again in the midst of another mysterious death and take it upon themselves to find what happened! This could be read as a standalone but I feel you would be lost. Although there aren't major spoilers for the first book, the characters aren't developed any further here. In The Marlow Murder Club we get to know each of these women, see them fleshed out but in the sequel, there's none of this. You take them as they come.

I was expecting this to have the same cosy whimsy as the first but, unfortunately, I was left disappointed! For a book where the plot kicks off in the first few chapters, I found it to be a slow read. The mystery that it's centered around felt a bit flat and I was barely invested in the outcome by the end, which I hate to say! The main characters, as mentioned above, are just written as a continuation from book one and it lost some of its charm because of this. They went from well developed to one dimensional which was a shame!

Thank you to NetGalley and HQ Stories for this advanced copy! Unfortunately, it wasn't for me which was a disappointment but that doesn't mean it won't be for you!

This second in the series has a lot to live up to if it’s to match or beat the first novel. No need to worry, this is an enjoyable read and I didn’t guess the whodunnit at all, but did manage to guess that several of the characters might have done it, but was wrong each time I thought I understood a clue.
The three very different ladies come to life in this novel; the writer knows a thing or two about making characters extremely relatable. You’ll know someone like everyone in this book.
A couple of twists and turns lead to an elaborate explanation of the who the why and the how. This writer excels with his Death in Paradise screenplays so it’s no surprise he leads to a detailed explanation of the whodunnit, just like his television dramas. It would be easy to see this series turned into television dramas that are easy and fun to read, while dealing with a double murderer.
Judith is not a Miss Marple type of character and Becks is not quite as you’d expect a vicar’s wife to be. Our radio presenter and dog walker Suzie adds plenty to the team.
A locked room murder is always difficult to grasp, but this writer achieves this by providing all the information you’d need if only you saw the clues. You’ll be shouting at the book to help the friendly police officer overcome her boss who appears determined to seek a different result.
A free copy of this book came my way and I look forward to the next in the series whatever the cost.

Death comes to Marlow by Richard Thorogood sees the return of three amateur detectives Judith, Suzie and Becks.
Sir Peter Bailey is throwing a drinks party the night before his wedding to Jenny Page and Judith has been invited. When during the Party a sudden crash is heard, and Sir Peter is found crushed to death in his study by his cabinet. The door is locked, but when the Police arrive at the scene, they don’t think that his was murdered, they think that he took his own life. But Judith thinks differently and wonders why would Sir Peter kill himself the night before his wedding? Judith and her counterparts of The Marlow Murder club, decide to do an investigation of their own, with the annoyance of the SIO investigating the case of this locked room mystery.
Thank you, HQ, for a copy of Death Comes to Marlow. This is the second instalment in The Marlow Murder club. I have not read the first book in the series and at the start of this, there was some reference to the first book. So, at first it took me a while to realise what was going on. I would advise to read the first one first. But as I delved further into the story, I found this well plotted and well-paced addictive read. 4 stars from me.

I really enjoyed Death Comes to Marlow. I read The Marlow Murder Club and enjoyed that too but this is better. The 3 same amateur detectives are back, but this time the dynamics of the group have settled and the personalities are becoming more established. The 3 main characters make a good team here with each bringing something different to the story.

Alongside the characterisation is a great detective story too. I had figured out the “who” but not the “how” of this, which was quite pleasing. The “how” was quite ingenious but the reader had actually been given all the clues throughout the story to figure it out for ourselves if we’d been clever enough, which was satisfying.

I would definitely recommend this to friends and family. I hope there will be more!
