I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Hurricane and Tornado is a non-fiction DK Eyewitness book for children all about Hurricanes and Tornadoes.
I knew some of the information in this book but did come away with so much more. I've always been fascinated with but also terrified of Tornadoes (since watching The Wizard of oz as a child) so this was a great book to read more about them with. The book is jam packed with information, illustrations and photos and would be a great resource for children to have access to during science and Geography lessons. Definitely a book for the inquisitive mind.
This brand of DK book is a little hit and miss for me – sometimes it's just too busy on the page, at others I like the multiple visuals and captions all over the place. This is an OK one, for it never really gets too OTT with the font sizes, box-outs and so on. But it does suffer from an awkward title. For this book is about all the weather extremes of the world, from hailstones to coastal erosion to Alpine avalanches. Nothing deserves to be singled out and put as half the title of a book that covers pretty much all that a primary school student would be interested in when it comes to climatology and the weather. For the teacher we get the trivial – prop airplanes are used to fly through hurricanes as their engines are less compromised that those of jets – and the unavoidable, like climate change. Visual quality is very high, as is typical with these creators – so four stars for the contents, fewer for the name of the thing.
The previous 2 ARCs from the DK Eyewitness series that I have reviewed were about Oceans and the Egyptians, 2 topics I am a little clued up on and have an interest in. This edition is a different experience as I do not know anything much about hurricanes and tornadoes and for the most part have not had a great interest in them!
It is extremely interesting and has definitely taught me quite a few new things about this type of weather phenomena. Like usual with DK books, the images do a lovely job of keeping things fresh and interesting and also helping to illustrate things and make it much easier to engage and learn from it!
The revised edition brings the content of this "Hurricane and Tornado" book right up to date. I love the DK non fiction books for children as they have lots of content presented in an appealing way, with illustrations and pictures to aid understanding and make the entire book much more digestible and engaging.
A worthy edition to any young person's library collection.
