Homecoming by Kate Morton is a beautifully written novel that artfully intertwines past and present, creating a rich tapestry of family secrets and mysteries. Set against the evocative backdrop of Adelaide Hills, the story follows Jess as she returns home to uncover the truth about a long-buried family tragedy.
The author's storytelling is both immersive and captivating, drawing readers into the intricacies of the Turner family's history. The dual timelines are seamlessly woven together, revealing secrets layer by layer in a way that keeps you hooked.
The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own distinct voice and depth. Jess's journey of discovery is both poignant and compelling, making for a deeply satisfying read.
While some parts of the narrative felt slightly predictable, the overall execution and the emotional depth of the story make Homecoming a standout novel. Morton's ability to evoke a sense of place and time adds an extra layer of richness to the reading experience.
Overall, Homecoming is a thoroughly enjoyable read that earns a solid four stars. Perfect for anyone who loves a good family saga with a touch of mystery.
I love this author and have been a big fan for years! This was a brilliant read and kept my attention until the very end. Highly recommend
It’s been many years since I last read a Kate Morton book (and, at the time, I read in Italian translation) and I was very glad to be back to her wonderful world. Her writing is a warm hug, something comforting to go back to once home after a long day at work. I enjoyed following Jess in her journey back to Australia and to her gran Nora, and I loved the descriptions of places and people. I found Isabel Turner’s mystery engrossing, and I also really enjoyed all the references to the pleasure of reading, and to the art of understanding languages. I was very happy to read this long, complex and heartwarming novel, in a time when fiction seems to become shorter and snappier and less comforting by the second. It’s good to take the time to sit down and focus on such a carefully interwoven narrative. I absolutely recommend
I have read all Kate Morton's books and I will certainly continue to do so. I am a big fan of her writing style, of the evocative type of narrative and the skillful weaving of past and present storylines. Her latest novel is no exception. I enjoyed the Australian setting and getting to know the (many) characters depicted. Part of the story is tragic and sad, centering around the unexpected and shocking death of a mother and her 3 children. As always, there are twists in the storyline - one of them I guessed pretty early on, but not the others.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest and impartial review.
"Homecoming" by Kate Morton is a captivating tale of family secrets, hidden histories, and the enduring power of love. Set against the backdrop of a grand estate in Cornwall, the novel follows the lives of the Westaway family across generations as they confront buried truths and rediscover their shared past.
Morton's narrative is richly atmospheric, evoking the charm and mystery of the English countryside. Her characters are intricately woven into a tapestry of intrigue and redemption, each grappling with their own desires and regrets.
"Homecoming" excels in its blend of historical detail and compelling storytelling, drawing readers into a world where the past and present collide with profound consequences. Morton's prose is lyrical and immersive, ensuring that this novel resonates long after the final page.
Overall, "Homecoming" is a masterfully crafted novel that showcases Kate Morton's talent for weaving together suspenseful plots with poignant insights into human nature. It's a must-read for fans of family sagas and historical fiction alike.
Totally captivating - I couldn’t put it down! I loved the twists and turns and how the story developed. One of the best books I’ve read this year.
I really enjoyed this book and flew through it over the Bank Holiday.
Some people have said it was hard going, but I disagree.
You need to pay attention to little points in the story as there are different narrators and different timelines, accompanied by chapters of the book based on the death of the Turner family.
Kate Morton brings stories to life that are magical, I read the 600+ page book in 3 days as I just couldn't put it down. You never know who is guilty until right up the end of the book. There are some many suspects, and so many twists and turns. I loved how the events in the initial pages of the book come full circle at the end.
Must read!
This book is very long and not for me. I tried so hard and even changed to audio but after getting half way I just didn’t know what was going on and didn’t really feel engaged. First book by this author
I've been a fan of Kate Morton's for many years, ever since her phenomenal debut The House at Riverton. This book lived up to all my expectations and included all the hallmarks of her writing such as masterful plotting, interesting characters and a rich sense of setting. It took a little while for the story to truly grip me but towards the end in particular I was hooked. I also would have loved to learn more about the house itself. Overall this was engrossing and full to the brim with mystery and secrets in an atmospheric setting.
Kate Morton is one of those comfort authors , you can always rely on her to deliver a good novel that takes you to another time and place and get lost in another world . I'm a huge fan of the dual timeline and Morton always brings the past and present together so well .
The novel is partly set in 1959 in the Adelaide Hills where a local man makes a discovery on Christmas Eve that results is a murder mystery . We then fast forward to the present day and meet a journalist living in London looking for a good story . Her grandmother who lives in Sydney becomes ill so she flies overthere and i will say no more ......!!
It's a very long book , and there are moments that were a bit stretched out but it's such a comforting read that it didnt feel like a chore to read . Another winner for me
A family tragedy. A book of love and loss interwoven over decades is finally unravelled with heartache at its very core. Each character brought to life within a backdrop of a small town. Well worth the read, however quiet a long one.
Loved this! I was new to Kate Morton but I will certainly be looking out for more books to read by this author. I was immediately gripped by the storyline and found it very engaging to read. The differing timelines were well paced and thought out and easy to follow. You sense that there was going to be some sort of twist or revelation at the end but it keeps you guessing right until the last moment what that revelation is going to be. A thoroughly enjoyable and captivating read.
Homecoming is a family saga crossed with a murder mystery tale. It is a beautifully written story with vivid characters and locations. I was fully drawn in to and invested in the story and highly recommend it.
Have have read lots of Kate Morton books before and was looking forward to reading this one. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. The storyline is a good story but the book was far too long. Lots of things going on that has nothing to do with the story.
Kate Morton is one of my favourite authors. I absolutely adored this book. I look forward to reading more from her. I highly recommend it to everyone.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Bad things happen to the best of people and we cannot let them overwhelm us. Life doesn't always work out the way we plan, but it does work out in the end." (p. 91).
#Homecoming is a return to previous form for #KateMorton. Her previous book, #TheClockmakersDaughter had me worried about what to expect this time. I needn't have been concerned.
Readers are introduced to Nora and Jess, two strong women, working to create their niche in the world. An interesting story evolves, with believable twists and turns along the way. The book is, however, longer than necessary. Some of the repititon could easily have been removed without detriment.
The story begins with the discovery of bodies
Then jumps to the present where Jess is try to unravel the mystery and family connection to the incident that happened many years before.
Kate Morton is a great story teller, this novel is a perfect balance of action and description. I was riveted: The characters and events were so compelling. Even the back and for between timelines kept me interested and the part where Jess was reading a true crime book. This section was very interesting and I felt like I was reading a true crime book or watching a documentary.
All the different threads of the story were easy to follow and I enjoyed the conclusion and the solution to the crime. I enjoyed trying to figure it out but I didn't quite, the author kept me guessing and changed my opinion of the characters as time went on.
The end was quite long as the loose ends were tied up, maybe it could've been simpler but despite thinking that I also wanted to read on and discover what happened next with the characters.
A good story and an intriguing mystery.
Having read a few books by this author, I thought they were all a bit samey. However, I had the chance to get this as a #netgalley #arc earlier in the year, so I thought I'd give it a go.
It actually felt a little bit different, maybe down to the Australian setting, although it was still the same twisty-turny double timeframe storyline. Probably my favourite of hers.
I guessed the 'big' twist but not many of the others.
Another impressive read from Kate Morton, full of the historical detail that you would expect from this author.
Set in Australia with a dual timeline following the lives of granddaughter and grandmother, dark secrets are revealed and perhaps finally the secrets behind the fatal incident in Tambilla. The female leads are beautifully drawn and feel like your own family by the end of the novel as you experience each revelation with them.
Woven against the main story, Morton threads themes of isolation, loss, bereavement and the need for belonging. Although hefty at over 650 pages the immersive experience of Morton's prose is worth the commitment to completion.
I’ve been following Kate Morton’s books for a while and this latest one did not disappoint!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my review.
