At some point I should give up on Janice Hallet and alas her plot always brings me in and I end up buying her books and hating them, I hope one day she writes me a 5 star that is properly mixed media of which includes a novel narrative like Sadie

The way Hallett tells her stories is so unique, with the plot unfolding through emails, texts, and transcripts. It makes you feel like a detective piecing everything together, and honestly, I was living for it. The mystery itself is brilliantly layered, blending a creepy cult, long-buried secrets, and some seriously shady characters.
What I loved most was how Hallett keeps you on your toes – just when you think you’ve got it figured out, she pulls the rug out from under you. The ending left me properly stunned! It’s not as fast-paced as her other books, but the slow-burn tension and intricate plotting more than make up for it. If you’re after a unique mystery that will keep you guessing right to the end, this one’s a must-read.

I love Janice Hallett's books but didn't get round to this one until I got a hard copy - the twistiness of Hallett's writing means I often need to flick backwards and forwards in the book to recap things which is really tricky on a Kindle. For best results, definitely buy the actual book!
Hallett's books cover a range of totally different plots - other books have featured the output of a children's author, an amateur dramatic society and (in her most recent book) a university art course. This book, however, focuses on a 'true crime' storyline with a writer investigating the cult of the Alperton Angels - and in particular seeking the survivors of the cult who have been given new identities and gone into hiding after the high profile deaths of other group members. It seems like nothing is quite as it was reported...
Regular readers of Hallett's books will find lots to enjoy here - I really love the way that the story unfolds through the emails, texts, WhatsApp messages, newspaper articles and interview transcripts between the key characters. This keeps the focus shifting and allows for Hallett to play some sneaky tricks on her readers like me who make assumptions and miss key things! In this book, there are also extracts from a playscript and novel relevant to the story, although I found these longer extracts slowed the pace a bit.
I found that I raced through this book because I really wanted to know what happened to the Alperton Angels. This is another excellent book by Janice Hallett - probably not my absolute favourite of them all (I have a soft spot for the humour of 'The Appeal'), but a great read nevertheless.

My review didn't send correctly in 2023 and I've just seen this book still on my shelves!
I stayed up until 3am to finish this in one sitting. The inimitable Janice Hallet has done it again! One of my top books of 2022. A compulsive read with dark themes. I will be recommending to everyone!
Thank you @viper.books for my advance copy - full review in the new year!

Always enjoy Janice Hallett and the inventive and imaginative way she write crime and mysteries. I love the format of the books told through different media however did find this did not translate well onto the kindle Netgalley version as text was all over the place. Some formatting issues to be resolved.

Unfortunately I was distracted every time I saw the title of this book as I kept reading it as the mid-brand muesli Alpen. But of course Janice Hallett is always great, so this book was a lot of fun.

I cannot get enough of Hallett's books! Her writing style is so easy to read but so cleverly put together. It keeps you in the right level of suspense, it hooks you and doesn't let you go!

This was my third book by this author, and whilst it wasn’t my personal favourite, it had all the trademarks you’d come to expect from a Janice Hallett book - alternative format (letters/emails) and a twisty plot that will leave you surprised!

I am absolutely blown away with how well thought out and executed this book is! The mixed media format is a unique take on the presentation of a brilliant mystery and left me unable to put the book down. The plot kept me guessing constantly and I too felt wrapped in the web of the mythology of the Alperton Angels.
A firm favourite of mine in the genre and I look forward to reading more from Janice Hallett!

"The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels" by Janice Hallett is an electrifying masterpiece that redefines the mystery genre. Hallett's innovative narrative, woven through a collection of documents, emails, and transcripts, plunges readers into a chilling mystery with unparalleled depth. The story of the Alperton Angels, a cult shrouded in tragedy and dark secrets, is brilliantly unravelled by true-crime author Amanda Bailey, whose quest for the truth becomes a gripping race against time and a rival author. Every twist and revelation is meticulously crafted, keeping you enthralled until the very last page. This genre-busting novel is a tour de force, cementing Hallett's place as the queen of tricksy crime. A must-read sensation that will leave you spellbound!

I have to applaud #JaniceHallett for how she pulls her stories together. It's no small feat to plan a full length novel and then decide to tell it via messaging services, audio recordings, emails, and more. #TheMysteryOfTheAlpertonAngels is completely absorbing and I highly recommend it to you.

Janice Hallett is an autobuy for me so I was very excited when approved for an early look at this clever book. Was not disappointed as it lived up to my high expectations of this author's work.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well, this book is most definitely unique!! When I first had a flick through it I was a bit concerned in the way it is formatted being entirely composed using WhatsApp messaging, Emails and other communications as well as scripts from other 'books'. I have never come across anything like it before and considering I have read hundreds of books that is quite a feat!! I became hooked on the storyline immediately and was surprised to find that I was actually enjoying reading the storyline in the different media formats as it gave a larger picture of what peoples thoughts and ideas were from many different perspectives!! It is definitely a gripping storyline and I was completely invested from the beginning to the end. Once I started reading it I just did not want to put it down and was glued to the pages every time I got a moment to read through. I love the fact that because of the way it is formatted that even though there are only 8 actual chapters you can stop the book at many different places without feeling lost as to where you were in the book. The storyline is packed full of mystery, the supernatural, manipulation, suspense, deceit, crime, cover ups, friendship and it really makes you question what is actually going on. Janice also uses the topic of manipulation and how easy it is for someone to manipulate somebody who is vulnerable with nobody to talk to and how it is so easy for crimes such as grooming and child abuse to go so unnoticed in the world we live in now. I love that everything is wrapped up in the end leaving no plot holes as that is a pet hate of mine when it comes to reading mystery books when something is mentioned then seems to be entirely forgotten by the end of the book. Janice weaves several links and storylines together absolutely perfectly keeping the reader drawn in hook, line and sinker!! Janice has a fantastic imagination and I was absolutely gobsmacked when the ending happened as well as some of the truths being revealed. There was no way I would have expected any of it, which is again another fantastic achievement as it does get harder and harder to shock me the more books I read!!! This truly is a fantastic work of art in book form and I will be recommending it to anyone and everyone!! An absolutely incredible, complex, twisted, addictive and explosive work of art written in the form of multiple media that will have you questioning yourself by the end. An absolute must read that I could never score less than a 10/10!! I cannot wait to read more books by this incredible author!!!

This was a different genre of book than what I normally read but I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you are looking for something different than your usual read!

I found this less of a mystery than Janice Hallet’s previous books, and more a sad thriller. The subject of a cult is immediately gripping, and as the story unfolded in a culmination of action it was hard to put down. A different read from what I have come to expect from Janice Hallet, but certainly thrilling.

This book honestly gave me chills! It’s a fantastic mystery and will have you gripped from the first page until the last !
If you’re looking to completely get lost in a story then look no further!
Would highly recommend

great book, i have loved books by this author previously and this did not disappoint! would highly recommend to others

The story is told in multimedia format. It is beautiful written and well plotted. The story is interesting and engaging. The characterisation is well done. An excellent book

The subject matter of this Hallett novel did not appeal to me as much - cult, possible child sacrifice - but the construction is excellent fun with our investigators being much of the entertainment. Will definitely recommend.

I love Janice Hallett's novels. She always writes in such an unusual way, but it is every bit as compelling. This novel is set in one of my favourite ways- text messages and emails. I have no idea why, but they make the book so much more fun and engaging than regular prose!
This book centres around a true crime writer hoping to revive her career, and funnily enough, I love books about this too!
There were times that I was a little confused with the plot, but I enjoyed this nonetheless.
