This is book six in the series. The illustrations are good. I love all the characters in this series. The descriptions are so vivid. I was gripped by the story. The best in the series so far
In the fantastic bestseller series, Adventures on Trains, comes the 6th thrilling journey. In this instalment, Hal and his uncle Nat embark on an Arctic Circle adventure for Christmas, aiming to witness the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, like their previous train rides, it does not run smoothly!
This book is brimming with twists that keep readers engaged. It's packed with peril! I loved the illustrations and the unpredictability. This series is perfect for mystery fans and want to be detectives.
I received this book from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
I adored this series with my whole heart, and this felt like such a strong addition, as well as a perfect ending. I am not ready to let Hal and Nat go if I'm honest! :D I love them. But all good things must come to an end, and really all that means is that I now have the perfect excuse to reread the whole series in the future.
5 stars.
The 6th adventure in the brilliant bestselling Adventures on Trains series.
Harrison Beck (Hal) and his uncle Nat embark on a new adventure travelling to the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights for Christmas.
On the night train to Narvik, Uncle Nat and Hal realise they are being followed by a sinister figure and Uncle Nat’s past catches up with him. Special guest feature from Hal’s mum!
The book is, like the others in the series, beautifully written and exquisitely illustrated. There are so many twists and turns, it keeps the reader gripped throughout! I do think this has become my new favourite though, there is real suspense and peril and the action builds throughout.
Highly recommend this entire series! Full of danger and adventure. Im actually really sad that there will be no more in the series as I could go on reading them forever!

As always this book is absolutely fantastic, I cannot get enough of this world and the adventures explored. The illustrations and text work so well together and I congratulate M.G. Leonard and Sam Sedgman on such well rounded characters!
I’m a big fan of the ‘Adventures on trains’ series and ‘The Arctic Railway Assassin’ did not disappoint.
Hal is meeting his Uncle Nat in Sweden to travel on a train to Abisko in the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights. Nat has been to the Nobel Prize banquet with his friend, Marti, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine but she’s worried because strange things have been happening to her for a few months. She is supposed to be travelling on the train with Hal and Nat but she takes off before breakfast.
Hal is desperately trying to avoid being caught up in a crime on this journey as his mum worries about him so much, but when his Uncle Nat spots a familiar face in the train station, he worries something may be about to happen.
With the threat of assassins, avalanches and a dangerous icy setting, this book is fast-paced and packed with action, just like the others in the series. Enhanced by Eliza Paganelli’s wonderful illustrations, this is an absolute treat for fans of mysteries and adventure stories.
It's no secret that I love the Adventures on Trains books, so when this new installment was announced I just had to get my hands on it.
This is yet another brilliant addition to an already fantastic series. We return to Hal and his Uncle Nat as they go on another adventure together, and as ever they make such a great team. With a wonderful setting; beautifully described and with glorious illustrations. Packed with adventure and intrigue; it absolutely lived up to my expectations.
An utter delight of a book, and series as a whole... If you enjoy Middle-Grade mysteries but haven't picked these up yet then please do. I promise you'll adore them. They are loads of fun, and the series just keeps getting better and better as it goes.
I think this is to be the final installment of the series, and I am so sad to see it end, but I've had an absolute blast reading them, and it will be a series I definitely return to time and time again.
I’ve read every book in the adventures on trains series and they have just got better and better. I couldn’t wait when I heard that Hal and Uncle Nat’s latest adventure was set in a cold, snowy climate and I knew it was going to be the best adventure yet.
Adding Hal’s mum into the story this time round gave the book a new twist and, yet again, the twists and turns kept me guessing until the end.
I downloaded this to read on the Netgalley app but it does not show in the app so I have been unable to read and review it. I love this series and have a finished copy now so I am very much looking forward to seeing how the train adventures series comes to a close.
Well, this was consumed in a matter of hours (with a horror film in the middle). Absolutely loved this. So much reminded me of my brother because stories are never set in Kiruna!! Fabulous story, absolutely brilliant and gripping as ever! When’s the next adventure?
I am so gutted this is the last book in this series. I did try to make this book last as long as possible but it just sucked me in and before i knew it the adventure was over.
Hal and his Uncle have such a great relationship and you really see it growing over the train journeys, the mysteries they solve and the friends made along the way.
Northern lights for Christmas sounds amazing. when they board the train they soon get a feeling something is not right and uncle Nate might have to confront his past in order to survive!
Another brilliant adventure with Hal and Nat! One of the things I love about this series is the way the blend fact with outrageously improbable yet thrilling fiction!
The settings, the trains, the cultures encountered are all so well described and as ever this has left me longing to make the journey myself (minus the assassins!)
I wasn't sure at first how I felt about Hal's mum's role in this story but it worked really well and it was nice to see her out of her usual context!
Overall, another gripping adventure full of tension, thrills and spills! Danger, excitement and action - what more could you ask for?!
What a way to end a series! I absolutely raced through this thrilling, page-turning slick finale. Tense and dramatic, I simply couldn't put it down and devoured it in one sitting. The most stunning setting, so richly imagined and brought to life with the most glorious illustrations. Dark, dangerous villains & the bravest & smartest detectives. An absolute triumph of a read. I loved it!
Having read all the previous books in this series, I was keen to read book number 6 and it more than lived up to my expectations. Hal and his uncle, once again, find themselves at the centre of a mystery which requires their expert skills. Once I started reading, I could not put the book down until I knew how it was going to end. Filled with twists and turns, I thought I'd solved the mystery but was then led in a completely different direction. This will certainly be a must-have for our school library.
I'm excited to see what Sam Sedgman and M.G. Leonard come up with next if this really is the end of the adventures on trains series.
Once more, Uncle Nat and Hal are aboard a train and this time they’re on their way to the Arctic Circle for Christmas, hoping to see the Northern Lights along the way. But as per usual, nothing is as it seems and as they leave Sweden both realise that they are being followed by a mysterious figure that seems to be from Uncle Nat’s past. Nat and Hal must work together and quickly if they are to outfox the chilling assassin who is hell bent on killing all those who recognise him!
I absolutely adore this series and this book is definitely no exception! With a much darker tone than the earlier novels, the authors have really upped the stakes in this book and there is a genuine feel of peril for Hal and Nat; no spoilers, but I was genuinely worried throughout much of the story for their safety! The setting of the Arctic and the Northern Lights was so gorgeously visualised with beautiful description that really captivated me and made me desperately want to take this train journey (assassin not included I hope). I am so incredibly sad that this is the last book in the series and I will really miss adventuring with these two detectives.
Hal has grown a huge amount since the first book – I only really realised this as I read The Highland Falcon Thief to my class in Summer and he’s so much more mature. Similarly, Nat’s relationship with Hal has developed a huge extent; he’s much less likely to try and constantly protect him and trusts his judgement with regards to detecting their mysteries. A mysterious, but familiar, visitor helps to really change the dynamic between Nat and Hal – though no spoilers from me here!
A chilling adventure through the frozen Arctic! 5 out of 5 stars.
This is definitely one of my favourite middle grade series and this sixth installment is one of the best. Hal and his Uncle Nat travel to Scandanavia and quickly get involved in a dangerous situation involving a scientist and her missing husband who has created a dangerous weapon that can kill people. They board the Arctic Express to travel north and see the Northern Lights, but as expected, all kinds of drama happens on the train on the way.
This was a darker and more sinister book than some of the earlier ones, with some really scary villains in it, but the pace was great and the drama was exciting which balanced out the darker elements. Hal's relationship with his uncle continues to be a strength of the books as you see how the trust between them enables Hal to go out and explore on his own. His drawings are also a key part of the book and by referring back to the beautiful illustrations by Elisa Paganelli, you feel you are involved in solving the mystery too.
I've read that this is the last in the series and I will be really sad if it is as they're such good mysteries with interesting facts about trains and travel included.
Once again the authors have given us an exciting, cleverly plotted story, set this time on a trip to see the Northern Lights at Christmas. From what I've read, I believe this may be Hal's last adventure. This has been a brilliant series and I recommend it to as many young book buyers as I can.
Hal and Uncle Nat are back in THE ARCTIC RAILWAY ASSASSIN, heading into the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights. However, after some strange happenings in Stockholm and the disappearance of a friend who was supposed to be joining them, Nat spots an assassin who is supposed to be dead on board. It's a race to find out what the assassin wants and how to protect themselves from him.
This sixth instalment is another whistle-stop ride through snowy landscapes - perfect for the wintry season. There are reindeers and snow mobiles and gorgeous lights in the sky. And, of course, the mystery central to every book. The danger is much more personal this time, as Nat's identification of the assassin puts him in the crosshairs.
There's also another family member involved. I loved how much their arrival let the book show how much Hal has grown in confidence since THE HIGHLAND FALCON THIEF, and how much Nat trusts and respects Hal's judgement. Hal is older than at the start, and has been through a lot, and it was nice for that to be realistically portrayed. The adults are still doing their best to protect Hal, as is the duty of care any adult has to a minor, but he's never belittled or babied. They've all grown across six books.
Once again, illustrator Elisa Paganelli knocks it out of the park. This is the fourth different illustration style in the series, in keeping with the styles Hal tries out. For THE ARCTIC RAILWAY ASSASSIN, it's time for watercolours and pencil. Despite the illustrations being printed in black and white, you can easily imagine the colours painted in.
This is the final book (nooooo!) I mean, there's been no official ruling out of more books, but there are no plans for any soon. It was a nice way to round of the series, bringing another family member in for Hal to find that he doesn't mind sharing these adventures with his uncle but also realising he has other family he can share the fun with.
Is this my favourite or is it one of the other brilliant books in this adventures on trains series? This is a series I will return to again and again. Hal and Nat have the best relationship, one that is loving but respectful as well.
When the highland falcon their first came out I could not wait to read it and love Nat and Hal and their developing relationship, and Hal’s love of trains being ignited by his mysterious uncle. I learned so much about trains.
Learning it was to be a series was the best news and now 6 books later, I could not imagine a better, more adventurous series. The sheer amount of research completed by both authors and illustrator is Impressive and makes me want to take every opportunity to travel by train, though I prefer to read a mystery than get embroiled in one, just as Beverley Beck states at the end of this book.
This is by far, the most action packed and dangerous adventure for Nat and Hal. They are old hats at this travel by train experience and know just what to do, and how to act. When Nat spots someone from his past, the pair are thrust into danger and the danger increases as Hal’s mum makes it aboard believing there to be peril for Nat and Hal. Her fears over their lives drew her to follow them aboard. So the three become a trio of detectives working against a pair of assassins hired to get “kill codes”. The background to the “kill codes” is like something from a Bond film, there is a Nobel prize involved, serious scientific research and a dangerous outcome if they are used by the wrong people.
As with all the books in this series, there are new characters to meet who help the duo solve the mystery, and in this case it is a young girl from the Sami tribe and her reindeer.
Being so far North, there are glimpses of the Northern Lights, snowmobile chases and the need to be careful on frozen lakes.
I am sad this is the end of this series but they are so engaging for readers and will ignite a new respect for travelling by train!
