A really funny story with a great plot twist at the end and gorgeous artwork. The younger children I read this to at school loved it.
A brilliantly funny picture book about recognizing what you see and being believed by others. I love the twist at the end, which will have the young readers howling with laughter.
A fun wintery adventure taking the reader on an expedition to Antarctica to see penguins, penguins and more penguins. But when the youngest explorer sees something surprising will anyone believe him! This was a fun story that would be great as part of a topic on Antarctica/the polar regions. An engaging story with busy pictures and a surprising ending.
We absolutely loved this book. The pictures are lovely and the story is cute. We laughed lots and read this book over and over again. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
A lovely fun picture book.
Nobody believes there’s a Monmouth about but the boy knows he’s seen one.
Lovely illustrations help to bring this great picture book to life. A book to read over and over and laugh along with each time.
Did he or didn't he? Lots of chortles amid the explorer's penguin frustration.
I felt reminiscent for South Park's Kenny, looking at the young mammoth-hunter. Just the eyes peek out as he insists he's NOT interested in looking at the boring penguins on the group exploration, he's there for MAMMOTHS.
And see one he does - orange, and in sunglasses and riding a skateboard. But nobody else can see it. The reader will be delighted at seeing the mammoth, agreeing with the protagonist, but feeling his pantomime 'he's behind you, oh no he isn't!' style as the rest of the group miss this rapidly-more-ridiculous hairy woolly one.
There's even a good little joke at the end, it's short but very funny. And there's a few facts about mammoths at the end that even a young child will be able to take in and understand - seeing the humour even more for the fact that mammoths are now extinct.
Silly giggles. Lots of visual humour in the pictures (with penguins for a change not the heroes/cutest thing going).
For ages 2-6.
With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample reading copy.
Alex Wilmore has created a wonderful illustrated storybook about a young explorer/ visitor to Antarctica who claims that he has seen a mammoth. Each viewing of the mammoth shows the “extinct” creature doing something more and more outrageously bizarre including skateboarding and ballet dancing. The other explorers are convinced the young explorer has seen a penguin. This book will delight children under 7 and is the perfect accompaniment in Ks 1 when exploring habitats and different creatures. It is humorous and uses some beautiful language which encourages young readers and listeners to broaden vocabulary and build up their memory of events. The illustrations and facial imagery is fantastically fun. This is a book that will be read again and again and I will certainly be using it in classrooms and recommend to colleagues
