I quite think Flop and I would get along, or as much as I’d like to be a great monster, in this world I don’t think I’d quite jive. This is especially true for punctuality. I digress, a precious book with a cute storyline, and even cuter graphics. And if you think your little might be scared because it’s filled with monsters, have no fear.
I received an e-copy of The School of Little Monsters, Vol 1: It’s tough being flob by BeKa and art by Bob from Europe Comics and Netgalley. Even though I have been gifted this book for review, all opinions are my own.
This little graphic novel was fun and enjoyable, I hope the series continues as this great. I loved both the art style and the storyline. Flop is an adorable main character. This is a good graphic novel for all ages to enjoy.
Highly recommend it if you enjoy cute and fun graphic novels.
Thank you to the publishers for gifting me this novel to read and review.
Read with my six year old child. She said she enjoyed it but wasn't her favorite. Thanks for the opportunity to read and review!
We all know how we’re supposed to behave at school, but what is school like for monsters - characters we really expect to break the rules rather than keep them. We can learn all about it in this fun graphic novel. Little Plop is about to start school but apparently he isn’t like the other monsters. He gets into trouble on the first day for arriving on time and doesn’t understand why all his new classmates want to catch lice! When he’s taken to work by his dad for the day, he’d rather help humans than hinder them. With bright colours and simple text, this is a great starter graphic novel for young readers, with a little peril and plenty to ‘read’ within the illustrations.
One of those kids' books that delight in being contrary, this features monsters at a school where the idea is to not learn anything – indeed, not even to turn up is preferential. If the teachers set you a maths question on the board, the best idea is to rub it out and ignore it was ever there, and boy – if you get headlice, then it's all round to yours! Only one monster-in-waiting is too diligent, too savvy and too, well, human to actually fit in and succeed by these topsy-turvy rules. Bright, brash, and easily read, this isn't too unpleasurable at all. I did think it best when it seemed to have more of a point, as with the episode here concerning the human child, but this is still a success. Not exactly a four star success, but a success all the same.
Thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book, and I loved the art style. I definitely recommend this book and I hope that there will be more volumes because I will definitely read them all!
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* very cute artwork! i really liked it. would read more of the story as well, very cute.
Flop does not fit in at school. He is never late, he is never messy, and he always wants to learn and grow. For a monster, that adds up to a complete and total failure. This comic is told in a series of short stories, from a clean bedroom, to the monsters competing to catch lice, to Flop finding a place where he finally fits in.
Although the idea isn't entirely original, and I've seen "monster is nice not scary" several times already, the plot and illustrations are creative and engaging and absolutely worth a read. I will be keeping an eye out for future volumes.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
I would like to thank the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this eBook.
While the book was a fun read, there was something missing about it. Maybe it is the abrupt ending or maybe the chapters should have been shorter. But the illustrations were colorful and beautiful.
This story takes us to the land of monsters where everything we normally teach children is exactly the opposite. It’s good to be late for school. It’s good not to turn in your homework and it’s good to have lice. Flop however doesn’t believe any of that, and he’s a bit of an oddball among all the monsters. When given a chance to go into the forbidden forest, he does, and finds out that it’s the forest of kindness, full of bright colors, rainbows, and happiness. He loves it. However, the story ends abruptly and there is no closure, so it feels left up in the air which makes the whole thing a so-so read.
The title immediately grabbed me - it just sounded so whimsical and fun. This was a delight to read!! SOOO cute and funny- it takes everything we are taught is 'bad' and turns the perspective upside down. Late to school- YES, the teachers & parents LOVE it! Not answering questions in class- PERFECT!
Except for one smol dude who didn't fit in, he WANTED to do all the things little monsters weren't supposed to do. It was a classic tale of standing out and fitting in, being kind and being true to yourself.
Would love more installments, I was smiling and laughing while reading this and it was a very fast paced graphic novel...finished in less than an hour.
Would recommend to younger ages, except this was perfect for a light read in between messy complex adult fiction themes!

I so loved this comic and could identify with Flop. He is the opposite of the little monsters in his class. So many kids will be able to identify with the characters in this book. I hope it's the first of a series and can see a cartoon becoming a cult classic.
This book was literally the cutest ever. I’ve smiled while reading it throughout the whole book and it only took me an hour or so to read it. The story is really funny, the illustrations are beautifully made and the concept was really nice: a world where everything is the exact opposite of what we’re used to. Everyone is naughty and mean, except for one monster. Everyone disobeys the rules, except for one monster. This creates funny situations, especially for older children, since the book shows exactly that what the children are forbidden to do.
I would certainly recommend this book to all young (and older) readers!
I did not like it. I guess this can only be fun for kids. It was not engaging. The illustrations could have been prettier.
This was a cute beginning graphic novel. I loved the illustrations and the concept. However, I felt like the message got a little muddled and sometimes the story was a bit difficult to follow. I look forward to the next volume, as I believe this could be a great series. Readers that enjoyed Bird & Squirrel, Scaredy Squirrel, Stinky Cecil and the like would likely enjoy this series.
The School for Little Monsters is such a fun read! The illustrations were so cute and the dialogues were very easy to read.
This books is great as it teaches kids that it's okay to be different and stand out!
The premise was fun and the illustrations were quality! I would recommend this comic to elementary aged children!
This is the cutest read! It is about a little monster who does not fit in with the other monsters. Instead of doing all the wrong things like the other monsters, he does everything right, and boy, does it cause problems. This book is a lot of fun and opens the door to a multitude of discussions. The story is written well and flows well. It is written in sections, so it is easier to read a few pages at a time. The graphics are colorful and easy to understand. Truly a delightful read! Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book.
A great introduction to comics for primary children, aged 8 and above.
My son loved this comic and found the concept of monsters misbehaving quite funny.
There are brilliant illustrations and Flop is so relatable to younger children, especially boys who don't always want to do the same things as their peers.
A great book/comic that teaches you it's ok to be different and definitely ok to be kind.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC
The School for Little Monsters
1. It's Tough Being Flop
by Script by BeKa & art by Bob
Here we follow the exploits of a small monster who is frequently repressed; whether at school or at home, he is frequently chastised.
He decides to go on an adventure with his friends to discover the secrets of a "haunted" house.
I enjoyed the boards and the various aspects of the characters, the bad guys, the good guys, and the nerds.
The colours are vibrant and entice you to read the book.
