I thank netgalley and the publishing house for allowing me to discover this book.
It must be said that he reminded me a lot of a cartoon that I watched as a child, his name is "mini vigilante".
Here we discover the adventures of a small monster who is often repressed, whether at school or at home, he gets scolded a lot.
With his friends he decides to go on an adventure and discover the secrets of a "haunted" house.
I liked the boards, the different aspects of the characters, the bad guys, the good guys, the nerds.
The colors are alive and make you want to read the book.
We’re having a nice time with this comic
The art style was amazing! And I loved the idea of society being the opposite where being late and messy is the standard.
The School for Little Monsters would be a great classroom title to discuss differences and kindness, as well as ways to behave.
I liked that it was broken up into several shorter stories, so one could be used as a reading book for a group if desired. I also love the graphic novel format as this can help encourage children who are reluctant to pick up chapter books to explore longer and more complex media.
Definitely one I’ll be picking up for my classroom!
Flop is a different kind of monster, one who wants to learn and read and be kind. He doesn’t quite fit in at the School for Little Monsters, where the teachers expect students to show up late and not do any work. The illustrations are fun and brightly colored, and my kids loved seeing the different monsters. They both thought this book was absolutely hilarious, especially the story where the monster with the most lice wins a prize. There are several short comics included in this book all starring Flop and his friends. Perfect for a child who is a graphic novel fan!

Everything is upside down in the School for Little Monsters: Students are expected to come late and leave early, snitch on classmates and disrupt where they can. But then there is Flop, who happens to be a nice person.
Initially I liked the idea of a setting where everything is reversed, but it did not work for long and soon got on my nerves. Especially as we wind up seeing the bookish, nerdy, shy kid being bullied because that's so often how the narrative goes.
Liked the visuals as usual though.
Would recommend seeking out another story by BeKa.
The arc was provided by the publisher.
A hilarious world of monsters that only do the wrong thing, naughty and mischievous things. Our main character Flop doesn't fit well. He likes to do nice things, loves cute and pretty, and actually he wants to arrive at school on time.
A parody that is well drawn and has a lot to be discussed when it comes to what we should or not do.
ARC Book Review of The School For Little Monsters - 1. It's Tough Being Flop by Scriptby BeKa & Art by Bob
Thank you Netgalley and Publishers for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Release Date: 31 August 2022
What is the book about: Children's Comic Book set in Monster Land with the main character Flop who doesn't seem to quite fit in.
Why I picked up the book: I picked this book up to read with my 5 year old as I thought he would like the graphics and story revolving around monsters.
Who I would recommend to read this book: I wanted to love this book since it has BEAUTIFUL illustrations. However, I did not and would not recommend to my friends to read with their children. Monsterland is backwards in what you would want to teach your children (which is clearly described in the books description), but I was missing the wrap up or story to tie it into some sort of lesson or positive. Instead it ended very abruptly that left both me and my son confused. There was also some fighting and some words that I had to swap out while reading.
Rating: 2/5*
Genre: Children's Fiction - Comics, Graphic Novels, Manga - Humor

The School for Little Monsters in an impressive and entertaining graphic novel. The storyline is sure to amuse children ages 8 to 12. Although this 34 year old enjoyed the read too. This fun graphic novel is set in a monster world where social norms are backwards to our world. The artwork is superb. Overall, a great read.
The illustrations are very beautiful in the comic was full of movement and I think kids would really like it the story was a little different. I think it was about it's okay to be different than all the others but some of the things I saw were a little bit sending the wrong message. I feel like it needs more story and it stopped to quickly without a real end.
Thank you Netgalley and Publishers for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Let me clarify, at the time of this review, I'm a single 22yr old graduate student who really has no kids in her life to read this to, but I requested it because it reminded me of those older cartoons and books I used to read as a kid.
This book is so cute! It's supposedly the first in a series and I'm honestly interested to see where the rest of the series goes with this concept. FLOP IS ADORABLE.
He's a friendly happy rule following monster. The rest of the characters in this graphic novel are like flipped from our normal. Everyone we (us, humans) perceive as right, is wrong for a monster. Technically in this school you're not excelling unless you're doing wrong. For Flop, that flipped concept doesn't make sense. He just wants to learn and be a truly good student, spreading goodness into the world.
Every parent would be lucky to have a kid like Flop, a science loving, kite flying, intelligent and kind, rule following kid, That is, any human parent. Unfortunately for them all, Flop is technically a monster, and has always stuck out like a sore thumb at The School for Little Monsters. While his peers get rewarded for being rude and showing up late, Flop is always too eager to please, causing his parents to worry that he might just not have it in him to succeed as a monster.
I really enjoyed this story, Flop was such a lovable character, and I really enjoyed the many adventures that were had throughout. His school “friends” were all unique in their own ways, and I really loved all the ways that Flop failed to be a good monster.
I would definitely buy this one for my stepson, and would highly recommend it for younger readers looking for a fun and easy graphic novel.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Europe Comics for the opportunity to read and review this title.
Oh my goodness, this book was downright adorable!
The School for Little Monsters is a fantastic book for those kiddos who feel like they just don’t fit in. It’s also just a fun read for middle schoolers in general.
In a world where monsters are expected to be nasty and terrible—sleeping in so they’re late for school, making messes, and being generally monstrous—being the only monster who likes being on time, clean rooms, and reading is nothing short of difficult for young Flop. But, ever the ambitious learner, Flop still intends to do his very best.
I had an absolute blast reading about Flop and his endeavors to stay true to himself even as he works to learn the monster ways. I have a strong suspicion that this book will be quite a hit with many who have the chance to read it!
Oh my gosh, this was very adorable, funny, and quirky!
It's set in a town full of monsters. They're lazy, rude, mean, destructive, and smelly - just like they should be! But, one monster isn't like the rest. He doesn't have the same interests as his classmates family. In fact, he's everything a monster should be.
I loved how he helped turn a nightmare into a dream and a made some secret forest friends. The one minor thing I disliked is that I wish his happiness didn't have to be secretive. It wouldn't been cool if the thing that made him accepted by his peers was disobeying their rules. That's what the best monster would do! But that's just my imagination doing it's own this. Anyway, this was just fun to read. Can't wait to share it with the comic book club!
I thought that this book was great and lots of fun!
The book was well laid out, it was nice and had some lovely illustrations
It was well written, the story was easy to follow and it had a great flow to the story, I liked that it was split up so we could read a few sections a night
I read the book with my five-year-old daughter and really enjoyed it and she is a bit like Flop! She is the first to go in to school and loves it, some of the other kids, not so much!
It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended!
The School for Little Monsters is sure to entertain your own little monsters. I think it would also be a great tool for children who are not keen readers due to its unique style.
The monster world is opposite of human world in what they expect of their children. Flop would be the ideal student and not the rude savage.
I think it's a fun read as long as they don't take "always take the easiest route and don't ask questions" to heart
A children’s comic book about monsters where the rules in the human world are reversed. Students are encouraged to come late to school and give incorrect answers in class.
But then there is Flop! A little monster that wants to be on time, get answers right and please his teachers. But the harder he tries, the angrier his teachers get.
I really liked Flop. I thought he was adorable. I’m not entirely sure if this is a book I’d buy for my niece. Definitely a book a can see some children enjoying- who doesn’t love monsters?
Review to come October 20th and thereabouts on Goodreads/Amazon.
I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
Oh my gosh! A school of monsters! Reminds me of that series by Sally Rippin! Only now in graphic novel form and by BéKa, one of my favourite artists. Squee!
In this book we are in the monsterworld. A world full of strange, weird, fluffy, hairy, spiky, drooly monsters and every one of them knows to misbehave. To be late for everything. To destroy and demolish. Well, everyone? Almost everyone. We follow a little monster named Flop (brilliant name) who loves a clean room, normal food, and oh yes, a good education. I had an absolutely hilarious time reading how he tried to sneak out so he could go to school in time (boo, the teachers are more than happy if you don't come they just want to eat their booger cake... yes really). On the one hand I felt for the little kid, but on the other hand? I just wish he had a bit of a monster in him. At 34 pages in and I just wondered if he was truly a monster? Whereas the others just didn't seem to care about destroying something even tried to break it more, breaking in, were excited to get lice and the likes, he was just there. I much rather liked to read about the other monsters and see what they were up to. Thankfully, despite Flop being Flop he had some friends/classmates who played with him and we saw their antics.
I had a laugh at how they reacted to humans and cute animals. Just like many other monster stories it seems that cute is a big no no.
Plus, I loved seeing the world these monsters inhabit and see what other monsters are living in it. The buildings were just so pretty and interesting. Not a fan of the food though, but I am never a fan of monster food. It just looks horrific and disgusting. XD
Oh, and I loved it when we learned more about some of the monsters job. Including nightmares! Though a shame that Flop kind of ruined that one.
Are we sure the parents didn't find Flop? Given what happens in that forest? I don't want to give too much away, but I was just so curious. XD
All in all, while I wasn't such a fan of Flop, I would have rather seen him just be a tad more monster-y instead of just looking like a monster and that is it. Just a few more traits, some explosions or something that turns him scary would have been great. But the rest of the things were fun. The world they live in, the school, the buildings, the nightmare job, the food (yes, disgusting but oh so fitting), the art was great. I do hope that the next book focusses on another monster.
This kept my six year olds attention for a good three quarters of the book which is very impressive!
The only part I wasn’t a huge fan of was the physical fight between the monsters. Not the best way for the “good” monster to deal with issues but I suppose that in keeping with a monster book. 😊
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the gifted digital copy. Opinions are my own!
It was just so cute and fun it was a very good and happy read.
It was fun to find all the "rules" for monsters and what they should do that are so different from what "nice" people should do. It's a good way to show to kids what behavior is related to monsters and what kind of things is considered as nice and pretty!
Flop is actually super cute and a little bit nerdy. Would have actually loved to read more about him, this volume felt a little bit too short to me but would be long enough for kids to have fun reading and still wanting to have more about little Flop :)
Flop is adorable, and monster lovers are sure to enjoy this story of a kind monsters who does his best to fit in and stay true to himself!
