This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel. Some of the illustrations are of a disturbing nature, yet they somehow still manage to be somewhat elegant. The story is creepy and interesting but I do wish it would have been a bit better constructed. Overall, I really like this book and I’m very curious as to where this story is going to take the orphan and the dolls.
Many thanks to NetGalley and EuropeComics for providing this ARC. All thoughts and comments are my own, free from outside influence.
This is a short, creepy graphic novel. It has a somewhat rushed, confused storyline which struck me a little as throwing a lot into the mix all at once. I mean, count them -- orphans, eyeballs, cannibalism, typhus, WWI and (for some reason) creepy dolls.
I did enjoy this; it is a pretty quick read but in a short time it achieves most of what it sets out to do. It is evocative, creepy, and interesting. It made me cringe and grossed me out effectively, which is something you want from a horror work, so no complaints from me on that front.
I wasn't wholly impressed by the design or backstory of the main creepy kid antagonist, and the desire to add a not so unpredictable twist to the creepy doll horror is somewhat undercut by the sheer level of how much else is going on, and muddies what I think could be a much more powerful story about desperation, poverty and the depth of human depravity.
That being said -- this is a graphic novel and therefore I can't not give it a whole star for the art alone. It's gross, gory, and absolutely beautiful. The character designs though unimaginative are executed (heh!) well and the art absolutely carries the story. The depictions of rotting bodies and bloody murders are absolutely not for the faint of heart but manage to avoid being truly gratuitous. It's all very well done for what it is
This was amazing! The artwork is absolutely breathtaking and the story…I don’t wanna say it’s cute because people will think I’m crazy, but I really really enjoyed it!
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Empty Eyes is a graphic novel with gorgeous art and an amazing creepy story that will hold your interest till the end. We follow three orphans who are doing what they can to survive in a time of war all alone in the orphanage. One of the orphans, Otto, gets tired of being bossed around by the other kid and living the harsh ways they do. So, he befriends some really creepy Victorian dolls. This is such a fun, creepy, fast paced horror graphic novel that I think a lot of people would enjoy.
I will definitely be looking out for more work from these authors.
I loved this really creepy, unsettling, and dark story. The illustrations were an amazing addition to the tale and brought the whole thing to life. I would read more from this author! Thank you NetGalley for the copy!
Amazing art and the story was great, did not expect it to go the route it ended up going in. Definitely not afraid to do things that other modern comics tend to stick away from. Do yourself a favor and read this.
2.5 ☆ for Empty Eyes.
The story is set during the war and about three orphans that do what they can to survive their harsh hunger. Unfortunately, one of them can't take their monstrous ways anymore. The death and pain are too much. However, when he discovers new friends - victorian dolls, everything is about to change.
This was a fun read that reminded me of Goosebumps. The art was interesting but the story a bit less. I enjoyed the concept but the execution was just fine.
This was the most disturbing graphic novel I have ever read. Don't get me wrong. The illustrations were amazing. But the story, with all the gore was awful. It should say in the description that it contains trigger warnings such as cannibalism. I've read numerous books with gore but never something like this. Would I suggest it? No. Did I liked it? No.
PS I do not even want to rate it because I would give it .5 star but for the shake of the feedback and the great illustrations I am giving 1 star.
This graphic novel tells the story of three children who will do whatever it takes to survive the war. Maurice, the mastermind, sends out siblings Ophelia and Otto to… recruit people… back to their orphanage for the winter, but what happens when Otto has had enough of being a slave to Maurice?
This book is creepy!! The visuals are absolutely gorgeous, and the gore is amazingly drawn and gross! I really enjoyed this short story.
This is a comic for adults only, not children, due to its content. War and disease have left three children alone in an orphanage. The artist has set the macabre scene perfectly. The narrative is horrific but compelling. This is a dark look at what may happen when children try to survive because they are left to fend for themselves. The comic makes you think about what depths you may sink to in a similar situation. Thank you to Europe Comics and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
