A Bewildering Case..
The ninth in the Jackman and Evans series of mysteries and strange things are afoot at Solace House. As Jackman gets pulled into a strange and bewildering cold case, a gruesome find is made which complicates matters even further. With a credible and well crafted cast of characters, an intriguing and often disturbing storyline and a plot populated with twists aplenty this is a worthy addition to the series, this time with a menacing gothic feel.
My thanks to Joffe Books, Joy Ellis and Netgalley.
It's just a fact. I love Jackman and Evans, and the whole damned team!
It's a funny thing, because these people don't cuss...much! They all like/love and respect each other. We never find the angst that is often so prevalent in other books of this type. They are a wonderfully cohesive unit.
Almost sounds like a cosy doesn't it? Sounds like something I would hate!
What Joy actually deals in is some messed up murders. Gruesome really.
Sadly, in this outing a beloved secondary character dies. I personally was crushed. It's just so difficult getting over this kind of loss.
Yet, I honestly can't complain. I think this was one of Joy's best books.
I always hate to see someone die, but I do love when an author isn't afraid of killing a character off.
Joy Ellis’s books are always enjoyable and Solace House is no different. From the first page right to the end it captivates you with an excellent storyline and twists and turns and of course the wonderful characters. This book was a pleasure to read and has left me eagerly wait for the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you for the ARC! I went into this with no context. It felt like it was part of a series but since I didn't look into that until I was finished I was like "how am I supposed to know about this person!?" That was on me.
Despite that little issue, I enjoyed the book. It was oddly wholesome for a book full of murder. It was like a bunch of best buddies solving some mysteries together in a cute little town. Everyone knows everyone and they even bring their spouses in while staking out potential cult activity. That is really sweet.
Will I read more of these? Yes.
The setting was wonderful. The characters were lovely. I loved the way they did the historical research.
Another fantastic instalment in the Jackman and Evans series. Tightly plotted with engaging characters, I couldn't put it down. A cracking read. Highly recommended. Thank you to Joffe Books and NetGalley for the chance to review.
I usually really like Joy Ellis but this was a bit more slow paced than I am used to. I had a really had time getting through the first half but as time went on it actually became quite interesting. I would recommend to a friend with the caveat that they should be patient at the beginning.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this book!
Solace House by Joy Ellis
Holly Stewart moved into Solace House wanting a fresh start for her and her family. She knew a tragic murder had taken place there, but she didn’t know the full ghastly history of the house.
Now, her husband has lost his job, the children are bullied at school, and someone is prowling around the garden at night. Someone who wants them gone.
Detective Jackman wants to help. Instead he’s been pulled into a twenty-year-old cold case. The gruesome murder of a young woman whose head was never found. A new witness comes forward. He claims to have crucial evidence on what really happened that night.
Another great book by this author . I enjoyed the creeping gothic horror style to the story and how the house had a major part in it.
One of Joy Ellis’ best efforts! This story of two stories came together brilliantly with more than a few shocks for those of us who are familiar with this series. Well written, as you can expect from a seasoned author such as this, with such colour to the characters and surroundings that you feel you are there experiencing the events yourself.
Book nine Jackman and Evans
Saltern-Le-Fen
Rowan Jackman is at Livery Stables mother Harriet tells him Solace is on the market again. Driving home he stops to take a look at it. its the most austure house on the fens with a very dark history meeting owner Holly Stewart finding out the truth of why they are selling after such a short time Jackman and Maria Evans dig into the history revisit to the victorians and a unsolved murder they get ready to tackle both.
Wow another almighty read from Miss Ellis once again, just what can I say all her books are so full of turn around chapters to full fill her readers. What a ending to Solace House
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC.
Generally I really like Joy Ellis' books, but for some reason I couldn't get into this book and just liked it mildly.
I thought it would be more gothic than it actually was. It's a police procedural with at it's centre a house that makes everyone who enters it feel uneasy. The people who've bought it are very unhappy and Detective Jackman really feels for them and goes out of his way to help them. I guessed the gruesome perpetrator quite quickly.
This Jackman case has a different slant, no murders at the outset, but reminiscent of a Gothic drama, is focussed on a creepy house with a grim history, which might be concealing dead bodies.
As its a cold case the pace is slower which adds to the suspense. Nevertheless it's very interesting and entertaining with engaging dialogue. Lots of surprises, shocks, twists, turns and murder!
I am looking forward to reading more about Jackman and his private life.
I have read all Joy Ellis books and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. I found this one difficult to get into but it soon ramped up with lots of twists and turns. Brilliant writer
Solace House? There’s NO Solace in this house.
Holly and Hugh Stewart and their children move into this house and terrible things start to happen. Someone doesn’t want them there.
DI Jackman and team investigate while investigating a cold case of a headless corpse.
This is the ninth book in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I give many thanks to NetGalley, Joffe Books and the author for this ARC!
A house with haunting memories of a past, still looks dark and unwelcoming. A family thinking they could make it a home, soon found out how wrong they were. It affected them all, the children at school, to the parents, each day brought more darkness and remorse of their decision.
An intriguing plot when Jackson delve into the past, as the killer strikes again after 20 years.
Given ARC by Net Galley and Joffe for my voluntary review
and my honest opinion……Oct 6 releases
Joy Ellis is AMAZING big fan and if you haven’t read any books you are missing out on a lot! This book was great and I’m ready for the next!! Grab it quick! 🥳
This has many heart racing moments, great characters and a fabulous plot. I love the way this author writes, I have read all of her books and they never disappoint.I enjoy series of books like this, with recurring characters as I feel I’m reconnecting with old friends. However, this could be read as a standalone.
Roller coaster ride of suspense and tension from beginning to end. This series is relentless in its emotion and thrills. Not your average police procedural!
