I really wanted to like this, but unfortunately it was a DNF at about 20%. There was too many POVs and I found that I wasn’t connecting with the characters. The premise does sounds promising so I might pick it back up in the future, but for now, it just isn’t for me.
This was an ok read. It had a good story line but it just fell a little flat for me. I wouldn't not recommend it because everyone is different. So if it sounds good to you definitely read it.
Thank you Netgalley and Legend Press for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.
The number of key characters in this meant there was quite a lot of lead up. It all played its part in explaining who was who, and why they acted they way they did, but it felt a bit overwhelming at times. That said, the characters were easily differentiated from each other and the multiple threads of information not too difficult to hang on to. Complicated relationships, secrets, and shared histories are the backbone of this getaway gone (very) wrong.
I enjoyed this novel overall, and always find Lisa Unger's books intriguing. There were several twists I did not expect, and I liked the "cabin in the woods" setting and the variety of characters. Without giving any spoilers, there were some secondary storylines that I don't think were necessary/added to the story, but in all, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick and thrilling read.
Happy Pub Day to Lisa Unger, whose Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six hit the physical and digital shelves on the last day of February. Unger is quite deft at thrillers, and this one has a bit of everything: husband/wife drama, brother/sister drama, boss/employee drama, exes, mysterious strangers, impending storm and more.
Together these tropes create the suspense we’re looking for, but the bridge too far for me was the second POV of Henry, a young boy who loses his mother. Henry’s story seems too random for most of the book, and by the time you figure out the connections, you’ve gone a long way toward figuring out the mystery.
Lucky for me, I’m a sucker for a good snowstorm thriller: Taylor Adams’s No Exit, Lucy Foley’s The Hunting Party, Ruth Ware’s One by One, Alice Feeney’s Rock Paper Scissors–I love them all! With characters to love and hate and a fast-moving plot, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a worthy addition to the snowy canon. 4 out of 5 stars

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book. I had a lot of high hopes going into this one, and maybe that was my fault. However, I really think that there are two many points of view, especially with one not clear how he ties until the very end. The six sleeping in the cabin are not the six viewpoints. It is alright, but it started out so strong that I feel it fell flat a bit by the end.
Love Lisa Unger - so was thrilled to receive this ARC! A perfect plot for a suspense/thriller story - and the plot unraveled so well. GReat characters - if you need a solid thriller, this is a god choice!
I was in the mood for a twisty thriller and Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six delivered. This is my first novel by Lisa Unger and it won’t be my last. The cast of characters is a great blend of different personalities. I feel like I know and understood each of them which is a credit to the author’s superb character development. There are a few twists, but I found what I enjoyed the most was staying in the moment with each character. The back story and its development into the present is truly what makes this story for me. Prepare to meet people you can relate to, a handful you root for, and a few who get what they deserve.
I highly recommend curling up by the fire with Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six.
Unfortunately this was a DNF for me. It’s my first time reading a book by this author and I didn’t like her writing style but I could get past that. My issue was the multiple POVs and the jumping between them. It was confusing at times and just not needed.
I like a thriller to suck me straight in and keep my attention throughout, this one felt slow and quite boring.

What could be more restful, more restorative, than a weekend getaway with family and friends? An isolated luxury cabin in the woods, complete with spectacular views, a hot tub and a personal chef. Hannah’s loving and generous tech-mogul brother found the listing online. It’s his birthday gift to Hannah and includes their spouses and another couple. But the dreamy weekend is about to turn into a nightmare. A deadly storm is brewing. The rental host seems just a little too present. The personal chef reveals that their beautiful house has a spine-tingling history. And the friends have their own complicated past, with secrets that run blood deep. How well does Hannah know her brother, her own husband? Can she trust her best friend? And who is the new boyfriend, crashing their party? Meanwhile, someone is determined to ruin the weekend, looking to exact a payback for deeds long buried. Who is the stranger among them?

Thank you to Lisa Unger and NetGalley for this E-ARC in exchange for my honest feedback and review.
Hannah, her brother Mako, and best friend Cricket with their respective significant others head up for a secluded vacation away from it all. When things begin to go awry the group realizes just how secluded they are. Or is there someone there with them that they didn't plan on being.
I enjoyed this domestic thriller as it took a turn I did not predict. The whole time I was reading I was trying to figure out the end. As a major fan of thrillers and mysteries it can be hard to be surprised at the ending but I was this one. I do feel like the story could have done without one of the side stories but I do see why Lisa Unger put it in. I just think it could have been condensed more as this particular character really didn't add anything to the story. The ending did feel rushed as it was wrapped up a little too nicely and quick but I still give 4 stars.
3.75+ stars
I’ve been looking forward to this one for quite a while, and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a story about love, family, betrayal; it’s about the horrific things that men so often get away with, but it’s also about the women who help them get away with their predatory actions, either actively or passively. I don’t know how I feel about all of the resolutions, but the book definitely made me think, which I wasn’t necessarily expecting from this type of thriller. The ending also wasn’t a huge surprise because, given the way the story was set up, there were really only a few ways it could go; nevertheless, it wasn’t boring or predictable in its execution, and I’m pretty sure some parts of it will stick with me. This was a fun, intriguing story that was well worth the wait.
I am starting to love this sub-set or scary plot lines. I think these can sometimes be more scary because its a world we could put ourselves into. My book club read this book and it was great for sparking conversation. Would recommend!
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger is an intriguing thriller with several storylines that build up to a chilling climax. Unknown family secrets, a search for answers, a peeping Tom…everything comes together at a remote luxury cabin when a storm comes through and the power goes out. The characters are likeable despite their secrets and mistakes and I found that I was rooting for even the most flawed characters to get to the end unscathed. Many people will find themselves in several of the scenarios in the book making things a little less comfortable and anxiety inducing including that next stay at an Airbnb or that somewhat familiar stranger that you just bumped into. A great read for your next group getaway.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
Who doesn't like a book about a fancy secluded cabin in the woods owned by a creepy guy rented for the weekend by well-to-do family members?? Well, okay, maybe some people don't like this premise, but for me, it was YES PLEASE! Plus I'm a huge fan of Lisa Unger. I enjoyed this story, multiple POVs, unique spin on the family relationships, and all along it was a 4 star book but the motive (since all fictional psychopaths have a motive) knocked my satisfaction down just a bit. It had a good lesson about family, and it is definitely worth the read.
Family can look like many different things to different people. In Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six touches upon some different aspects of family. When Mako organizes a weekend couples' trip, he invites his sister, Hannah, and best family friend, Cricket and their partners. What starts as a luxurious trip to unplug and reconnect, quickly takes a turn for the worst. And is the worst of each person revealed? Also, running concurrently is another storyline involving Henry and his mysterious mother. You quickly get a feel of the connections, but don't really see how its all going to come together. The story has suspense and mystery and a deep sense of foreboding. But, unfortunately, I didn't like any of the characters (except for Henry and Piper) so I find that hard to connect with the story.
Maybe we should change the title with Sleeps Seven.......but I'll never get over being roped into staying with these six characters in the woods of Georgia. Never.
Lisa Unger is a talented author who usually turns out quite the novels. But she got taken over by these treacherous characters who were seriously unlikeable and irritating. Much like the high volume screech of a smoke alarm on full blast.
We start out with a family dinner with Sophie, Mother of the Year. Never satisfied. Never runs away from nit-picking and nudging her way into the limelight. No wonder Mako plans a trip for these three couples. But they bring their own personal baggage and issues with them. Only we've changed the setting and added Nature on steroids. What fun!
As of late, authors have been adding multitudes of characters to their storylines and timelines with the famous Then and Now. We get bombarded with points of view. Our eyes ache from the calisthenics of it all. Just plain overkill. Over and over and over again.
I'll continue to search out novels by Lisa Unger. This one should have had these people quarantined and the cabins boarded up.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Park Row and to Lisa Unger for the opportunity.
This book follows the story of three couples who go for a long weekend getaway at an isolated cabin. Once they get there, secrets unravel and things become nothing as they seem. I really enjoyed this mystery. It’s told through the eyes of several characters, but it didn’t get confusing because each story was unique. I also liked that the stories came together quite well in the end. There were a few red herrings that went off the rails for me, such as a hint that a particular sculpture was made of human bones. That made the story a bit contrived. I also thought the ending went on a little long. Otherwise, this was a very entertaining book.
Hannah and her husband Bruce are invited to go on a weekend getaway with her brother Mako, his wife Liza and Hannah's best friend Cricket and her new boyfriend. It's their first weekend away from their baby girl and Hannah has a feeling that something is going to go wrong. But what could possibly go wrong when you are headed to a cabin completely off grid for weekend when they are calling for severe thunderstorms? Hannah thinks she is seeing ghosts in the woods but decides her mind is playing tricks on her, until things start to go wrong!
This was a good novel that had it's fast paced moments but also had some slower ones. I enjoy Lisa Unger's writing style and definitely recommend this quick read!
Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and the author for my ARC!
I had high hopes for this book and it just felt a bit meh. I enjoyed it but I wasn't gripped like I wanted to be. It was just ok but could have been so much more.
