Okay so there’s some good and some bad with this one but I’ll start by saying despite the negatives I really enjoyed this book and was kept on the edge of my seat.
The plot is good, the pacing is good, the feeling of suspense is good. The setting of the cabin in the woods with a ghost story from the past adds to the suspense factor.
For the negatives:
The characters are all pretty cliched which did lead to some eye rolling on my part but I got past it.
There are a lot of characters/POVs to follow and different timelines as well. I don’t think it was necessary to have so many, it seemed to complicate things and left a few plot points unsettled at the end.
There were too many characters to follow and too many story lines. It was confusing and not very interesting. The author did not really develop any of the characters so that you knew their story so it was hard to remember who was who. Thankfully it wasn't a long read so I didn't waste much time on it. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for the advanced copy. I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
The storyline had a lot of potential. A secluded cabin for the weekend, three couples with a lot of drama going on, and a creepy cabin owner with secrets of his own - I really thought that I would enjoy the book more, but sadly, it just wasn't for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for thearc.
This psychological thriller tells the story of three couples who visit, you guessed it, a secluded cabin in the woods. There are secrets, lies, danger, and mystery surrounding their trip.
There were also so many characters and different timelines and storylines, I had a tricky time keeping them straight and they were a bit overwhelming.
I didn’t always feel like all the stories connected or flowed too well. One character in particular, Henry, felt very random and I didn’t understand the connection to everyone else.
I thought the storyline with the house owner had so much potential, it was interested and could have been a huge part of the story but it fell flat.
I felt like the big twist was too far fetched and didn’t completely wow me and wasn’t super memorable.
While this was a miss for me I have loved some of Unger’s other books and would for sure pick up another!
I have enjoyed many Lisa Unger books over the years and typically I love vacation mysteries. Unfortunately, I just didn't care for this one. The characters were not believable for the most part and they were unlikable, horrible people harboring many secrets. The twists and turns, while not predictable, were not very interesting. The plot had a lot of potential and the setting doesn't get much better than a secluded cabin in a storm.
I have been drawn into the locked-in thrillers lately. This one was brilliant once I was able to sort out the characters - there are a bunch. Great read!
I love books set in wintery cabin settings so this was right up my alley. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you for providing me with a copy Netgalley.
While I love the concept of this book, the slow pace and ever changing POVs and story lines made this book drag beyond belief. I wanted to like this book so much but I had to force myself through it. The constant change of POVs and timelines made it impossible for me to get lost in the suspense and the over the top, dislikable characters didn’t hold much of my attention either.
DNA tests, scandals, secrets and a creepy setting. Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six has quite a bit! The storyline chugs along at a decent pace to keep things interesting without too much of a lull anywhere. Overall I enjoyed the storyline, even if it was a tad messy.

Excellent book. I particularly liked the way Unger increased tension slightly with each chapter, revealing a little more about each character. She keeps rising the stacks using multiple POVs. Some characters were likeable and some, as you learned more about them, became less so.
I have read a few Lisa Unger books and have always enjoyed them. This book was just okay for me but I'm not sure what I didn't love about it. I thought there was just too much going on. Too many red herrings, too many characters that didn't really need to be in the book. The DNA thing started out as very intriguing and then I lost interest. Nobody was even that likeable. It was confusing at times.
The other thing that annoyed me was that the author went to Goodreads to rate and "review" her own book. Too me, that's trying a little too hard, especially with a well-known author. I'm immediately put off when an author or a family member, relative, or friend does that.
So this review reflects what I felt about the book. It passed the time, it could have been a lot better. I don't understand the rave reviews, but that's just me.
Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read and review this book. All opinions are mine, and freely expressed.
Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy of SECLUDED CABIN SLEEPS SIX. This book asks such interesting questions about nature vs. nurture and the ethics and consequences of widespread DNA testing. A set of family & friends travels to a secluded cabin as a hurricane approaches, and soon there's a missing person and a killer on the loose. It's hard to trust anyone in this story, and it kept me turning the page -- I read it in a day! I really enjoyed the main plot, the setting, and the characters in the cabin.
I felt this was an excellent thriller. The author did a great job of Lee you guessing and making you think you had figured things out by little clues and then going a different way! Plus I liked how she had individual stories that got you totally interested.
This book was so enjoyable! I thought I had it figured out early on but I was wrong. I liked the characters and the plot twists. Definitely would recommend this to my friends
Thank you so much to Net Galley for the ARC! I was extremely excited to be approved to read this book as I thought the whole idea behind the book had a lot of promise and while it did keep me guessing a bit, it still fell a little flat. The story bounced back and forth so often, that if I didn't end on a chapter, I found myself trying to remember what was happening and where I was in the story. It did keep me guessing throughout, as I did not know how it was all going to tie together, but once it all did, it was just ok to me; no wow or shock factor that I was hoping for.
I got this book on net galley and was super excited to read it due to the description. It did NOT disappoint me. I loved the storyline honestly and all the little twist. I will say though it does not go into great detail there should be an SA trigger warning. The back and forth confused me at first but I caught on and the end made it worth it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a quick thriller.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher/author for providing me with and ARC of Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six..this was a pretty decent thriller having kept me reading throughout the day, although I didn’t find that I liked any of the characters except Henry & Piper.. the rest were pretty self absorbed… book went in a completely different direction than I thought in the beginning , but ultimately I did enjoy Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six… 3 solid stars
I went in excited for this one, but it didn’t meet my expectations. For one, I just didn’t enjoy the writing style. But I also found it difficult to remember all of the characters since it jumped around so much and we never really got to know each of the characters that well. While I can be a fan of multiple POVs, I didn’t think that Unger used the strategy well; it made the book more confusing for me. Lastly, I thought the ending was just absurd. Many thrillers have pretty crazy endings, but this one was just weird, and a little confusing, and I didn’t like it.
Sad to say, I didn't care for much in the book. The worst part was the lack of flow. Switching between backstory and present was jarring. The story itself touched on a lot of issues, but ultimately it was boring. This won't stop me from picking up more from Unger.
Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger. I was so excited for this novel. I read it once and rated it 3 stars. At the end of December, I decided to read it again because I could not remember even reading it. I DNF'd it second time around. Changing my rating to 2 stars.
