This eerie, suspenseful story had me guessing right until the end. The characters have so many layers and their pasts are slowly revealed. I couldn't put it down and found myself sneaking away and reading more.

My favorite part of the thriller was the setting - what can happen in a secluded cabin in the woods, with six people, without internet or power! How intriguing! But that was the extend of the entertainment I got from the book. For me the thriller wasn't exciting and I figured out the twist early on. What bummed me most was all the main characters were stereotypical - the SAH mom, the powerful businessman, the workaholic husband, the yogi, the party girl, and the mysterious guy - and they all behaved exactly as expected, which made them boring to me.

The main reason for the murders was also something I didn't buy. Not to reveal too much, this felt like a lukewarm excuse to become a serial murderer.

The ancillary stories of the host, the maintenance guy, and the paranormal activity didn't add to the story. Those didn't weave into the main story and were kind of left out at the end without a wrap up. Don't know if this was deliberate or not, but those felt as they didn't really have a purpose except to add some thriller "fluff" without adding thriller "meat" to the table.

Hope others will enjoy it more.

This is my first book from this author. I'm looking forward to reading more from her.

Quite a lot of characters and a lot of flipping back and forwards. It’s not a book to put down and leave you need to push on. Well worth it but I often have to let my unanswered question go!

Thanks to NetGalley and Legend Press for the eARC in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are my own.

I wanted to love this one but unfortunately I didn’t. The entire plot, presentation was so convoluted. The book alternatives from past and present viewpoints of the various main characters. It was hard to follow. The writing was solid but everything was too far fetched.

I’m so confused!🤪
The cast of characters… massive.
The storylines…numerous!
Me...hopelessly lost trying to keep it all straight.

Three couples sets out on a weekend family mountain getaway.
But the forest has eyes. They are not alone in these woods.
So who is it watching them, and for what reason?
You may want to think twice before you rent your next Airbnb.

A genealogy test that may reveal more than anyone is ready to hear, leaving a disturbing question. How well do you know your own family?

I was hoping all the pieces would come together for me in the end. Nope. I was left confused with at least one loose thread if not two🧶. Maybe it was just me.🤷‍♀️

I recently returned from a vacation where we rented a secluded, mountain cabin. (That likely slept six.) Glad I waited till I got back before reading this one!😅.

I listened to most of this book as an audio but switched to digital for the final third when my ear--buds died. An easy transition, though it didn’t clear up my confusion.

I’ve been reading books by Lisa Unger from…well the beginning I’d say. And it’s always been a bit hit or miss. I’ll have to chalk this one up in the miss category. We’ll see where her next release shall land.

A buddy read with Susanne that left us both a bit disappointed.

Three couples, a relax in retreat to a secluded cabin, a storm brewing inside and out, each has a dark past with their mysteries and secrets……
This is one of those books where I get the feeling of “Have I read this before?”.
Although well written, which is what we’ve come to expect from this author, for me, the story as a whole was just a bit….middling.
The characters, could take them or leave them. I wasn’t really invested in any one of them. This in turn made it much harder to connect with the story in general.
I didn’t find myself getting excited at the prospect of picking it up, but I knew I wanted to finish it. So…yes. I think middling is the best word to use here.
It won’t stop me picking up more from this author as I’ve read some phenomenal works from her. This one just missed the mark for me.
Thank you for the privilege of being able to read it as an arc.

Three couples head for a much needed weekend away from all their responsibilities. However, each person has a dark secret that could destroy them and their loved ones. I wanted to like this one but the characters were unlikeable and sometimes the plot became way too convoluted.

When three couples rent a luxurious cabin in the middle of the woods for a weekend getaway, they're all hoping for some much-needed rest and relaxation. But as soon as they arrive, things already seem a little...off. The host of the property is acting strangely, the personal chef is telling horror stories about the history of the house and each couple seems to be dealing with their own personal issues. When members of the group start disappearing, it soon becomes evident that there really is something strange happening.

While the premise is intriguing and I love the title, this book just did not do it for me. The DNA storyline was an interesting layer to the overall plot, but I think it ultimately ended up being way too much of the conclusion. There were sooo many "coincidences" in this book and it was totally distracting and took you right out of it in my opinion. I did enjoy that there was action happening throughout, although it easily could have been 50 pages shorter. I know some other people really enjoyed it, so definitely read other reviews to find out which one you resonate with the most if you are interested in this one!

Thanks to NetGalley and Legend Press for this ARC. I usually like Lisa Unger books and while I did not dislike this one, it was not my favorite. The writing was fine, but it was a little too unrealistic for me. I will still continue to read her books though.

Siblings Mako and Hannah are retreating with their spouses and a best friend and her plus one to a luxurious cabin in the woods in Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six, the February 2023 book coming from author Lisa Unger. In a second plot line following orphan Henry, thanks to DNA testing, he might be able to find extended family members with the help of one he has already found.

Mako is a technology mogul who has funded the entire getaway for Hannah’s birthday including a private chef so that all can enjoy a weekend that is relaxing as they all have very harried lives. Henry has found an aunt who is into genealogy, and with her help, he starts finding half-siblings, some of whom have died. How these two plots come together is masterful.

Cricket is the best friend of both Mako and Hannah, having once been Mako’s girlfriend. She still has a place in her heart for him, and it is hard to be in the group and watch how tenderly Mako treats his wife Liza. Henry keeps finding out more and more about his family to the point that his wife Piper is concerned he’s too connected to the past than to the present and future. The deaths of half siblings are causing him great concern about his safety.

The weekenders find themselves facing one crisis after another, and the relaxing weekend is turning into a nightmare with power outages, a missing person from their party, and the threat of “somebody out there.” Henry finds himself racing to stop the person he thinks is killing members of his gene pool. Long kept secrets as well as recent ones come together for one tension-filled climax. No place will a reader want to insert a bookmark as this psychological thriller is simply unputdownable.

This is the 20th book from Lisa Unger, whose last book, Confessions on the 7:45 is now in development at Netflix with actress Jessica Alba to star. Unger lives on the west coast of Florida with her family.

My review will be posted on Goodreads starting November 30, 2022.

I would like to thank Legend Press and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for an objective review.

Three couples rent a luxury cabin in the woods. There's a storm on its way, everyone seems to have their own secrets which are slowly revealed and a funny feeling that they're all being watched. Roll on the fun!

I do love an exciting, locked room thriller and this one was just that. With multiple POV's and dual timelines, there were many suspects in this book. I didn't expect the story to go the angle that it did but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it because I was hooked from start to finish. .

I am a huge Unger fan and this was one of her best! Thrilling and kept my attention until the very end. Definitely glad I didn’t read this while at an airBnB!!

Who doesn't love a good mystery? Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six definitely ticks all the boxes of a tense, thrilling read! With locked room elements, we follow a group of six on a weekend trip away in a remote idyllic holiday home. There is no shortage of secrets amongst this group and, of course, things start to go very wrong.

I liked this book quite a bit! While I felt it was slow in parts, the multiple POVs and timelines helped keep the story moving along. It was definitely the kind of book I kept making guesses about, so if you're like me in that regard, you'll enjoy reading along! On occasion, it was a little predictable but still a captivating read with some elements you won't see coming! The last few chapters are intense and the ending certainly delivered!

A family goes to a cabin to spend time together, unplugged in paradise, only for secrets to be revealed and generally some random junk to happen.

Holy POV/Timeline Batman!

Alternating POVs and jumping timelines get totally out of control and make a mess of a plot. And the worst part? It's SLOW. So not only are you jumping around and trying to connect the dots, but you do it in the slowest, sometimes boring fashion. I loved the title and the premise (RUTH WARE herself said it was "a delciously tense ride), but it really is a mess of a book trying to push a message that is probably good but ends up very convoluted.

I always enjoy books from Lisa Unger and this was no exception.

An interesting thriller which keeps the reader engaged. An interesting spin on the impact of sperms donation and the ripples that can cause for decades to come if children don't know about their biology.

This kept me on the edge of my seat guessing who was responsible. I loved the ending how they all came together. Liza’s decision left me wondering what I would do in her shoes.

To start, I was very invested in this book in the beginning as it showed three couples heading off on a vacation together in a cabin in the woods. However, the backstory of each character slowly pulled me away from the story as I found that there really wasn’t a “good guy” among them other than the characters meticulously referred to as “good guys” throughout the story. I really did enjoy how this book brought in DNA testing as a way to heighten the plot, but there were additional characters thrown in that felt very odd and mostly didn’t add anything to the story itself.

While I understand the author is trying to show the depths and struggles associated with familial relationships, I was surprised by how many of the female characters she portrayed as grossly obsessed with one of the male characters – especially the choices of his wife in the end of the book. While humans are deeply flawed and everyone has to make their own decisions, it would have left the story a bit more complete had the character been locked up fully especially considering the issues surrounding his company.

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Legend Press for the E-ARC to review.

I am heartbroken to say this wasn't my favorite Lisa Unger novel. I usually love her writing style but, this one was a bit all over the place.

The multiple POV and characters made it so some of the story lines or characters didn't even matter and felt like a filler. There are a bunch of things going on at once that make you a bit confused and leave things undone.

Hoping her next novel gets me back on the Lisa Unger train!

This is a classic case of trying to do too much. This book has just about every trigger warning and trope from discussing rape, animal abuse, dark web, child abuse, murder, genetic testing, peeping toms and of course… ghosts. It could have been much more effective by doing less and expanding on one element.

I went into this ready for a creepy, locked door mystery but instead found each page to be a drag. Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six implies we have a small cast and are facing a sort of And Then There Were None situation. I was so excited!

Instead the book travels through time and there is a very large cast of characters which for the first half of the book make no sense together. The stories we read are so disjointed and when they do come together the whole story feels jarring. Not to mention, there are several plot lines that are used as ineffective red herrings or are just lost along the way, making the book feel extremely unsatisfying.

With that said, a very large part of why I had issues with this book was that every woman’s personality and life was defined by a man. This is a book that explores rape culture and the #metoo movement, but none of these women have any of their own agency. In fact, I think if we applied the Bechtel test here it would be pretty telling (maybe there was a point where women talked about something other than men but it’s not sticking out to me at the moment, please feel free to let me know)

Anyway, this clearly did not do it for me and I felt like it totally missed the mark. Not every book is going to work for everyone and that was the case for me.

It's a familiar trope in mystery and thriller novels : people stranded in extreme weather in a secluded house or cabin far from civilization, with a killer who might or might not be among them. What I liked about this novel was the back story of the people in the cabin that would put them in danger from each other or from others.

The idea of who can rightly be considered family, whether through biology and genetics or through close relationships, takes up much of the book, and brings up questions that I found intriguing. The story has a lot of action and suspense that also make it a very entertaining read,
