Seeing some mixed reviews of this book I wasn’t sure about how I was going to like this book. I generally like this author a lot so I figured I would give it a shot and im glad I did. The book started out seemingly like a typical group goes to a secluded place in the woods and they start disappearing. But this story quickly became more with a back story being woven into the current day that made the story that much more layered. Unger did a nice job of keeping the story intriguing while also including the idea of what makes a family. Is it genetics or is it who we surround ourselves with?
Thank you to #netgalley and to the publishers for allowing to read this advanced copy.
Thank you Netgalley and Legend Press and Lisa Unger for an eARC.
This was my first by Lisa Unger and while I really enjoyed most of it I felt I got confused a few too many times. Other than that it was a fun read. I love the secluded setting and most of the characters. I feel a little left in the dark with the cabin owner and what he was up too. Unfortunately we don't really know what happens with him. With that being said I will definitely give this author another try.
REVIEW: 4 Stars
This book was just so much more than I anticipated. It's a complicated web that ends at a secluded cabin during a tropical storm.
Told in multiple POVs, in the past and present tense, there's a lot that goes on until it finally comes together in murder and mayhem. The build up may seem slow to others but with all the moving pieces it was important to establish this particular time line.
The most important thread of this novel was so well done and it truly makes you think about things. I would say more but I think it's an incredible spoiler.
There were only a couple of things I would have liked to have seen and that was Mako's point of view, especially there at the end. I felt he was a more crucial part of the story that was only addressed as more of a secondary character. Which I felt he was not. There were some things that were just repeated over and over, small things though, this was just my opinion.
Even still, I highly recommend Secluded Cabin of Six.
Three couples, all with secrets to hide, spend a weekend getaway in the woods of Georgia in Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six. Author Lisa Unger spins a masterful tale as several storylines connect in this claustrophobic thriller. Tensions amongst the couples are simmering as the idyllic weekend turns sour, and a threatening storm charges the atmosphere, both literally and within the group, as the couples battle the elements and each other as the secrets come spilling out. The reader is kept on edge, trying to piece together the puzzle as the earlier story unfolds, keeping you completely engaged and flipping the pages. I received an arc of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Legend Press for my #gifted electronic review copy!
Happy Pub Week to Lisa Unger. I would highly recommend this twisted psychological thriller. It had a great dual-time storyline that all comes together in the end. I found the number of characters to be confusing at times, but it mostly gets buttoned up in the end.
I would want to ask more questions about Bracken, the person that rents out the cabin. This was the only character that didn't have an ending...
I am recommending with some warnings.
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a lock-in thriller set in an isolated holiday home in Sleepy Ridge, Utah.
A perfect luxury cabin promising an enticing retreat welcomes three not-so-perfect couples hiding behind their wealth, secrets and lies. With a great storm on the way and a suspicious holiday host watching their every move, who will make it out alive?
When Mako books a luxury stay at Elegant Overlook for his wife Liza, his sister Hannah, her friend Cricket and their partners Bruce and Joshua, they expect nothing less than the perfect getaway from work and life. While their phone service is poor and their WiFi is weak, their chef-cooked meal is rich and the drinks are strong.
When the storm hits, fallen trees block the roads and the cabin’s power generator is cut. What’s more, Liza is missing, Joshua has disappeared and there’s trouble lurking in the shadows …
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a gripping thriller full of mystery and suspense. With red herrings and plenty of twists and turns, you won’t sleep until you’ve finished the book.
Running parallel to the narrative is a side-plot of a half-siblings investigating their ancestry, their efforts made easier over time thanks to DNA testing kits and growing databases. While it’s an interesting subject, its link to the main story is somewhat weak and the thriller would have worked better if it explored more into Mako’s narcissistic, over-privileged past mistakes.

If you like feeling you are on a runaway train filled with horror, shock, fear, suspense, and disbelief this fast-paced mystery is for you. What a whirlwind of emotions as you are pulled through one drama-filled day and night! Lisa Unger did a great job of building suspense and delivering blow after blow after blow.
Thanks to NetGalley and Legend Press for the opportunity to read this thrilling ARC.
I love an isolated setting books. This is my first Lisa Unger book, and I was anticipating great things, but this book fell flat for me. There were too many characters and POVs, and the characters weren't likeable either. The book also goes back and forth in the past to the present. So, it's a lot to understand. Additionally, make sure you check trigger warnings. There is some dark topics mentioned, and the author didn't include a trigger warning list. I did enjoy the isolated cabin setting, and the author did a great job describing the setting. Overall, an okay read. I would not read it again.
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six has many characters, and at times it got a little confusing and hard to keep up with that many, but eventually I got hooked and was so lost in the story that I couldn’t put it down! It mainly follows Hannah and her husband Bruce, Hannah’s brother Mako and his wife Liza, and Hannah’s best friend/Mako’s ex girlfriend Cricket and her new boyfriend Joshua. Mako has them all get away for the weekend to, you guessed it, a secluded (but incredibly fancy) cabin. The plot also follows Henry, a young boy who doesn’t quite know who he is. Let me just say I absolutely loved Henry and Piper. I hope to read a love story by Lisa Unger someday because she wrote theirs beautifully. I also love reading about Tampa Bay since that’s where I’m from. But back to the cabin! Things are tense from the moment they all pull in, and the creepy owner of the cabin has his own agenda. A lot of the characters in this book were just horrible people and I felt it went a little too far trying to redeem some of them. Even the good girl, Hannah, made bad choices…I really loved her character though. There was a lot to unload in this story but the bottom line is sometimes family isn’t blood, and blood isn’t always family.
I received an advanced copy to read from NetGalley in exchange for a review, and opinions are my own.
I had such high hopes for this book. It starts with a disfunctional family vacationing in a cabin. Creepy wierd things happening. I found it hard to keep all the characters and felt like i struggled to finish.
you know when you are reading a book and you genuinely can't wait to see this adapted to the big screen? thats exactly how i feel- this was WILD, twisty and kept me saying''HOW DOES SOMEONE THINK OF THIS!'. i am manifesting for this to eventually grace my screens one day :) thanks netgalley & the publisher for the ARC, in exchange for an honest review!
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a thrilling multi-layered mystery! Three couples vacation together at a luxurious remote cabin. Unfortunately, a storm comes and with it, buried family secrets come to light. It will keep you guessing until the end. It is definitely a quick, twisty read!
I was so looking forward to reading Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six and Lisa Unger did not disappoint! I was a little confused with all of the characters at first, but I promise it all comes together and makes sense. Hang in there it is worth it! You will love this book!
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers
Once again Lisa Unger tells a masterful tale of suspense and mystery. Secluded cabin, no wifi, lots and lots of secrets make for a chilling and captivating story that I couldn't stop reading.
Lisa Unger is a master storyteller and I look forward to reading all of her books!!!
Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC.
This book had so many characters. That’s the first thing that others have said and I have to echo it. It was sometimes hard to keep track.
Families have secrets, and this one was no exception of course. But I did struggle with the secret keeping one character did for another. Just took the wind out of my dailies about the book.
I think the premise of this all coming out in a locked room style trope was very interesting. The read was very atmospheric.
"People always say that you can't choose your family. But that's not always true. We do choose. And from those choices we build a life."
This was an intricate, twisty, and deeply creepy psychological thriller that was difficult to put down once I picked it up! I love locked room mysteries, and Lisa Unger did a great job weaving past and present to bulk this one up into something entirely unique and truly thrilling. The pacing was great, the twist wasn't easy to predict, and it shone a spotlight on some of our deepest fears (how well do we really know the people we love? How much does it matter where we came from? Do ancestry programs do more harm than good? Are places alone haunted by the past, or are people, too?)
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for this advanced copy. I enjoyed her last two books. but this book felt like the last ten I have read with the same theme. They all run together and it's just not a theme I'm willing to read anymore. I skimmed it. It was ok.
This topic is way overdone. Every time you turn around there is a book about friends going to some secluded place for vacation and one of them is a killer. I couldn't get into it. Too overdone.
3.5 stars - I actually read something before release date! I really enjoy locked-room mysteries, and I've been wanting to read a book by Lisa Unger, so I started reading Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six as soon as possible. I read it fairly quickly, and thought the main element behind the story was interesting, but it left me wanting more. There were many characters who each had their own secrets, and one narrative that felt quite random and didn't add much to the plot. Overall, it was an entertaining read but I wanted more tense and creepy moments.
Thank you to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley!
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is about three couples that rent a cabin in a secluded area. The narrative shifts between different characters and I felt that it took too long to get going and wasn't able to hold my attention. I had to mark this one DNF unfortunately.
