What started as a weekend of fun and relaxation will end in fear and revelations. Some that are expected and some that will shock to the core. This book was really well written, and I found the plot twists really interesting and well done. I did see where the book was going but that's not from a lack of originality, I just have a mind that usually sees things coming before they do. I found the premise really interesting and something I haven't seen done in books before and that was refreshing. I wish the book had more twists and an ending that shocked I felt this story kind of ended without much punch to it and I wish I had more payout at the end. But I would recommend this book and I know many people will love the writing and the characters.

Hannah just wants to stay home with her young Daughter and husband, but her big brother Mako has other plans for her... plans that involve her finally getting away from some much-needed R and R At a secluded cabin resort on the woods. A spa a chef and time to unwind with her brother his wife and her best friend and her current boyfriend of the moment she has to admit it sounds pretty good. Maybe too good. Once they arrive nothing goes as planned the lights go our a quest disappears, and someone is waiting in the shadows. Someone that has been waiting for this very moment to destroy all that has been build. There waiting to rip down the walls that surround these people and expose them to the truth. To trust no one and nothing most of all themselves.

A very well written twisty book with plot very different to what's out there right now. A must read

I really enjoyed this! I loved the premise, the characters (okay, some weren't likable, but that was the point), and the plot. I loved how you knew who the bad guy was, but not why. And the red herrings had me going back and forth! I didn't piece everything together until closer to the end, and that's what I love, to keep guessing! The familial theme, and what exactly constitutes a family was a nice touch. As well as a look into the DNA companies. Lisa Unger is one of my favorite authors, this book did not disappoint! Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced digital copy.

Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced reader copy of this book! The book reminded me of Lucy Foley's style. There are several different perspectives and non-linear timelines. I think at times it did become a little confusing to keep up with, especially the jumping back and forth in time. There are so many characters so it was a tad overwhelming. But I did enjoy the writer's style of writing and descriptions. It was very easy to visualize. I enjoyed the main characters Hannah and Henry the most. I think I would have enjoyed just the two of their perspectives alone but I understand why there needed to be others to expand the mystery and suspense. It was a quick and entertaining read!

*Thank you to the publisher and author for an ARC of this book.

The premise of the story - 3 couples with secrets to hide - spending a weekend of luxury in a secluded cabin, appealed to me, especially with the promise of a psychological thriller filling the pages. Unfortunately, my expectations of this book weren't quite met. I don't like to be negative about books as I appreciate that authors put so much work and effort into their stories but this felt like it needed a really firm edit. There were far too many points of view - several could have been omitted without removing anything from the story (in fact, this could have made the narrative much tighter and more suspenseful). This is the risk of an abundance of viewpoints - it dilutes the tension and makes it harder to follow the main thrust of the story.
Anyway...
Equally I wasn't particularly keen on how men and women were portrayed in this - the women were mainly almost subservient, at least emotionally, to the men and seemed to depend on their male partner's mood/love/loyalty for their sense of self-worth. The men were workaholics with secrets to hide. If one couple displayed this relationship dynamic that would have been fine, but for every one to have the same dysfunctional relationship was frustrating. Hannah and her husband were different but Hannah was a nervous stay-at-home mum, reluctant to leave her child for a weekend, and it felt rather stereotypical.
The thriller aspect behind all this was interesting and it was a shame that that strand could not have been made stronger, perhaps through an earlier introduction to the narrative. I guess it plays into the reveal at the end but in some ways I felt two major storylines were competing for attention here and neither reached its potential.

In this suspenseful book, many interesting threads come together to fill out the story. At first, it felt like a lot of characters to meet, but I quickly felt attached to some of them and hoped they made it to the end of their vacation. Mako, Liza, Hannah, Bruce, Cricket, and Joshua seem like the types of people to enjoy such a "rich man's" trip like this weekend sets up to be, but as all the undercurrents become clear, the secrets and cover-ups make sure that everything was not as it seemed.

This book has some wild premises and moments, but I love how one of the themes running through it has to do with the nature vs nurture debate, as well as what to do with what we know about ourselves and others.

I went into this book completely blind and recommend that approach for the reader.

I’ve read quite a few of Lisa Unger’s books and am a big fan, so I was really excited to dig in to Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six! The story is told from varying character POV’s throughout and starts out with a Holiday dinner with Hannah, her Husband Bruce, her brother Mako and his wife Liza, and their parents. They’re in the midst of opening gifts when they find a mysterious unmarked gift containing Origins DNA tests for everyone. No one will admit to the gifts and they all decide to throw them away - or so we think.

The story unfolds after Mako & Liza decide they want to treat Hannah, Bruce, they’re childhood friend Cricket and her new boyfriend to a couples retreat weekend at a luxury cabin. Here the story takes many twists and turns until you get to quite a twist at the end!

I really enjoyed the interesting concept of this book and I can’t say I’ve ever read a mystery/thriller with a similar storyline. It hooked me from the beginning and I found myself reading whenever I got a free moment so that I could try and figure out the twisty mystery behind those origins tests.

I felt like the ending was a tiny bit outlandish, but I still really enjoyed this book overall. The varying POV’s might be hard to follow for some, but I’ve really come to enjoy this style of writing! While this wasn’t my favorite of Unger’s novels, I applaud her unique story and think that this book is very much worth a read!

Thank you to the Publisher and Author for providing me with a copy in exchange for my honest review!

This book absolutely did it for me. I was nervous. The thrillers I have read recently have been so average, so I was hesitant to start a thriller from an author that I didn't recognize. I was so so so happy I did. It isn't often that a book successfully has two separate plot lines throughout nearly the whole book and the flawlessly melds them together. While I saw some goodreads reviews saying that it has the basic "locked door" structure of most thrillers as they were trapped in a secluded are and couldn't get out. However, I didn't see that as a barrier to success. I love a dark and stormy night as much as the next thriller reader.

I loved the complexity of each character. None were anything other than essentially morally grey. None of them felt like a classic "oh. this is the bad guy and these are innocents." Everyone shared a wonderful complexity. While I think that some of the "Henry" chapters could have been moved along a bit quicker, they did become the backbone of much of the story.

Another positive is that I didn't find any blatant loose ends that were never tied up. No red herring was too far out of place. Things just made sense.

My only negative is that I wish we could have seen some more of Mako's character flaws earlier on. To save from any potential spoilers, I will just say that the progression of Mako's storyline towards the end of the book came wwaaaayyyy out of left field. I wish there would have been some more hints sprinkled in.

Overall, a banger of a success. I can't wait to read more from this author.

This book centers around a dysfunctional family, all of them with secrets and drama of their own, taking a vacation together to a secluded cabin. The cabin is more of a luxury home with all the amenities and includes a personal chef. But the decor is strange, bordering on creepy, the staff is intrusive, the host has hidden spy cameras, and let's not even mention the tragic history of the property itself. Is it the ghost they keep glimpsing through the woods or something more sinister? As the many storylines converge, the picture becomes clearer and will leave you wondering WTH just happened?!
From the start, this book has a creepy vibe and I was turning pages, fascinated to find out what happens next. All the secrets!! My only problem was that with so many characters, parts of the storyline were hard to keep track of. But I love how they all tied in together at the end! Absolutely loved this book!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Secluded Cabin Sleeps is the newest novel from Lisa Unger.

"Three couples rent a remote, luxury cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway. Something is off though. The private chef tells them of the murder that happened there years ago...and the young girl that haunts the lake. The owner is a little creepy and there's a big storm headed their way.

But unknown to the group - there's someone lurking in the woods that's unwilling to let secrets lie buried any longer."

There are several storylines so this takes a while to get going. There are the usual secrets of a thriller - the previous bad family decisions - a storm knocking the power out - and betrayal. It initially feels like it's going to be an "adults behaving badly" story but Unger adds more. She is one of a growing number of writers who are including the consequences of sharing DNA on geneology sites.

Unger hides the bad guy and the betrayal well. There are clues but you're never sure.

There is a Brad at the end who gets a paragraph. He's a tech mogul, money launderer who gets decapitated. Again, no love for Brads.

Fans of domestic thrillers will enjoy this new story from Unger.

Have you sent your DNA to a site? Found any lost relatives?

Lisa Unger knows how to write a mystery! Mako rented a luxury cabin in the woods for three couples hoping the weekend getaway will refresh them all. Expecting to hike and enjoy the outdoors, a storm comes up. The outing is not refreshing. The host spends too much time hanging around, their personnel chef shares that the luxury cabin has a mysterious history. Mako’s wife Liza has a migraine, so she excuses herself to lie down. Hannah, Mako’s sister is there with her husband Bruce. Bruce seems distracted and that troubles Hannah. Hannah is the dependable one, always has been and has covered up Mako’s messes her whole life. Cricket comes with her boyfriend Josh. Cricket and Hannah have been friends since high school and there has been something between Mako and Cricket off and on. All the luxuries are pointless when a storm sets in, cell service is minimal, they lose power and Liza is gone. There are so many secrets held by each person. To complicate matters there is someone on the premise watching each one with malice intent. Lots of messy family issues and a fear of exposing them. Characters you feel sorry for, some you love to hate, and others like Henry and Piper that know what family looks like and that is all that counts. I was guessing until the very end.

Definitely consider this story a page-turner. There are enough red herrings to keep the reader engaged, however, there was a lot repetition and it became quite annoying (it comes across I am sorry to say as lazy editing) and it was also a bit far-fetched.

With thanks to #NetGalley and #LegendPress for an #ARC of #SecludedCabinSleepsSix.
I could not say this was an excellent book, nor does it fall into a bad book category, however it is quite an interesting book. This book follows the stories of several people, which reach an epic conclusion one night in a secluded cabin in the woods.

As we enter chilly fall weather I’m really excited to read more bone chilling thrillers, even if the premise isn’t unusual or surprising.

A group of people are locked in a cabin during horrible weather - and everyone is suspicious of each other. Nothing new, but Lisa Unger sure does have a way of writing in a way that keeps you reading.

These kind of whodunit books can be a fun way to pass time, and I would recommend it for fans of the genre.

Thank you to Netgalley, publisher and author for a chance to read and review!

Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is one of my favorite reads so far this fall. What could be more anxiety inducing in the digital age than being out in the middle of nowhere, isolated from the world (*gasp*! No power, no service?) and having things make a turn for the worst?

I fell in love with the family at Christmas - it could've been my own family, each character representing a standard player in the dynamic. I felt cozy with them, despite their troubles. The more you read, the more their darkness shows....every family has its secrets.

I really enjoyed flowing through the timeline and different player's POVs, and couldn't wait to find out how they all fit.

Overall a great thriller read this season. Highly recommend.

4 stars - Really Liked It
