A very fun read! Highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an e-ARC copy of this book, in exchange for this honest review.
a great continuation of the series. I love this author's writing style, it's so original and engaging. the plot drew me in and i didn't want to put this one down.
Book four of Pargin's John Dies in the End series isn't the strongest entry in the series - but it's still a wildly energetic and weirdly entertaining read.
This time around, sees the team trying to stop a plot to end the universe through an evil toy that consumes live body parts. Anyone that's read one of these books will know that there's obviously a lot more to it than that but it's fair to say the weird and ick is dialled up to 11 for this one.
Unfortunately after a cracking start, the story somewhat stagnates for the middle third of the book, making this a little tougher to get through than previous entries.
Still, if you are looking for creative, oddball horror that's like nothing else out there - you can do far, far worse that give this one a try.
I am a gigantic fan of Jason Pargin, I am so honored to have gotten this ARC and right as I was making my way through the audiobooks too!
This book series is literally the stupidest thing I have EVER read (I'm saying that with love and awe). Nothing compares and nothing makes sense and I love each book so so much.
I'm struggling to pick out things to say about it because even though I just spent the last 3 days reading it I can't think of a proper summary and thats exactly the way it should be. Each of these characters is dear to me and no book makes me laugh and make me say "what the actual fuck is going on?" quite like a Jason Pargin book.
Also so happy to get more chapters from John's perspective, each time a chapter starts with him I'm like "oh god, here we go..."
I want to read the rest of the series because this is a very weird and very entertaining story. Loved it, had a lot of fun.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
Wonderfully weird and loads of fun - I adore this book and think you will too! Thank you to the publisher & NetGalley for the advance copy!
This is the fourth book in the "John Dies at the End" series. All the other books in the series were written under Pargin's pen name David Wong, who is also the main character of the stories.
Like the three other books in this series, this book can be read as a standalone. Reading the other books in the series, in order or not, won’t help with that feeling of “what the … am I reading here?” It's a bonkers wild ride with aliens and magical soy sauce and parasites and a magical egg that demands human sacrifices and ...
In other words, a novel where you have to trust that the author knows what they were doing and go with the flow.
I really enjoyed reading John dies at the End- If This Book Exists You're in the Wrong Universe. It is quirky and very well written
I didn't know what to expect from this book, but, what I did get I loved. It was funny, it was surreal and I was totally there for it. I loved the writing, I loved the characetrs. Will definitely be reading more.
Hired by a family who has just moved to 'Undisclosed', the team investigate a child's toy and app that will inevitably lead to another apocalypse. As per usual Jason Pargin takes you on a ride that has aliens, monsters and time travel all thrown into the mix.
On the flip side to this, 'If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe' describes how the events of the previous books are starting to take a toll on the town and the general ambivalence by the local townspeople towards the occurring cosmic horrors. Rather than run away from the horrors most of them just pull out their phones and film it.
This is a fantastic addition to the John Dies at the End series.
This book was a total surprise for me. I read the original trilogy years ago and really loved it. This installment was amazing too. It was the perfect mixture of bizarre and humor. I think this book can perfectly read as a standalone but you should definitely read the other books for full effect. I'll recommend this series to anyone who loves dark humor and cosmic horror. Thank you for the early copy.
This has to be the weirdest book I've read in a long time, but strangely enough, I loved it! The dry humour, coupled with the bizarre lives of the main characters, John, David and Amy, and the monsters/cursed objects/alternate dimensions they hunt down, make this an amusing, adrenalin-filled read! Highly recommend!
An absolutely incredible work of fiction. A storyline so bizarre that I wonder about the sanity of the author and in turn, readers such as myself who enjoy it. It's really got the lot, slacker heroes, unknown villain(s), some strange plot to overthrow/obliterate humanity and humour. Loads and loads of humour.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and am very grateful to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the advance copy in return for my review
