Shalini Boland has another hit on her hands with this fast paced family drama/psychological thriller.
Told from many different points of view, it has a well drawn cast of characters that you will love to love or love to hate. It is a story of secrets and lies, love and revenge and has enough twists to keep you guessing.
Highly recommended!
Thanks to Shalini and NetGalley for allowing me to read In The Daughter-in-Law prior to the publication date.
This is an easy read in which Shalini has used multiple narrators to effectively weave the story leaving the reader to work out the accuracy of each narrator’s words, or lack of words.
It is a complex tale of 2 families.
The Nelsons are so proud of their daughter Amy who is studying medicine and they are happy to support her financially. Younger daughter Michelle wants to study art which displeases her parents who refuse to support her plans.
This leads to ill feeling between the sisters with Michelle leaving home and cutting off contact with her parents and only occasionally condescending to respond to Amy’s texts.
The Fletchers own the Royal Oak pub which they run with their sons, Felix and Seb.
The charismatic Felix takes whatever he wants, repeatedly showing his dominance over Seb.
The Fletchers are protective of their family, dismissing Felix’ indiscretions.
In this page turner, there are many twists, turns and red herrings before the truth will be exposed.
Thank you for this ARC.
This was a nice twisty novel where everyone was hiding something. I LOVED the setting, I can't talk about much else without revealing something. It would have been cool to have more time with Nicki throughout the book though.
First book by this author I've ever read and now that I've read this one I can't wait to read her other 2 I have . This one literally had my up all night reading , and that's hard for me to do since I'm sick with a cold but I did it anyway, the family drama, the secrets ,the lies, the feeling that everyone couldn't be trusted , the disappearance, and the feeling like oh man did that poor woman marry into the wrong family.
Shalini Boland’s books are always easy reading, with a good old twist and this one is the same. When Caroline and Seb return to England from Australia with the news of a hasty wedding, Seb’s family are very underwhelmed. Trying to undermine and sabotage their relationship, poor Caroline is getting it from all angles!
When she discovers that Seb is recently divorced and that no one wants to discuss it, she starts digging around herself.
I didn’t love this (like I have others) but I liked it a lot! I just found the “reveal” a bit lack lustre, and unbelievable that Caroline would confide in that person the way she did! No spoilers obviously! Still a good solid 4 stars!
The Daughter in Law is the latest novel by Shalini Boland. It’s full of secrets and family drama and I enjoyed every page of it. Some nice little twists and a plot that moved at pace. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
Shalini Boland never disappoints with her books. This dark thriller follows a new bride Caroline who travels to the UK with her new husband after a whirlwind romance and tries to settle into life in a pub but his mother does not seem to trust her at and she seems to be forever making mistakes that trying to get on with her new family but is all what it seems and does she really know her husband at all?
Even though I had guessed early on one of the twists it certainly did not spoil my enjoyment . Caroline and Seb return home to England with a big announcement , they have married in Australia with none of the families knowledge, this especially does not go well with her mother in law who does everything she can to undermine their relationship, we here the story from both of their perspectives . Caroline is shocked when she finds out by accident that Seb was married before and tries to find as much information she can about Amy who they tell her ran off with another without so much as a forwarding address , Caroline is instantly suspicious and we soon find out why
Another fabulous read from Shalini , keep them coming
Take a female brought to the family home/business by her new husband--one that seems to be up to something, and add to the , mix an overbearing, suspicious mother-in-law, you'd get the beginning of this new psychological thriller by an author who has become quite popular for books in the genre.
I found the characterization to be extremely well done to the point that I could visualize quite easily the expressions on, the mother-in-law, Lillian's, face. There were a few red herrings that led me totally astray, and plenty of people to be suspicious of.
This book is proof that Shalini Boland is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to books filled with twists and turns.
Who needs enemies when you have these people as family. Wow! I knew something was off with Caroline but I couldn’t figure out what it was. Then that mother in law goodness gracious she was just awful. You can never go wrong with Shalini Boland. This was a slow burn, family drama, domestic suspense type of book. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this ARC!
Another amazing book from Shari!
Caroline has just moved half way around the world to be with her new husband Seb. After meeting online, she leaves her home in Australia and flies over to the UK to join him and his family in their pub/restaurant. After being introduced to her new in-laws, who are shocked to learn they have a new daughter-in-law, she moves in and starts to get to know her new husband and family.
Lillian, her mother in law, seems quite remote towards her and Caroline can’t quite work out why….until she learns of Seb’s big secret. But the problem is that Caroline has a huge secret of her own….
I love this writer and her books just get better and better.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review.
I was excited when I heard Shalini Boland has a new book coming out. This is my 9th book by her and she is one of my fave authors. We meet Seb who has returned from Australia with his new wife, Caroline. His parents had no idea he was even dating anyone. This book had one “interesting” twist after another … all the way to the end… and it had me guessing till the end too. Loved all the characters in the book and wow what an ending! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an early copy of The Daughter-in-Law. Who doesn’t get excited when a Shalini Boland book comes out? But I have to say she’s writing too fast to get books out instead of her earlier ones which had such depth. This went round and round and round. Almost like a young adult novel. Always a fast read are her books but I wish this one was more compelling.
Another fav author and another book that guarantees to be good just by the blurb
Seb is back from Australia and arrives in Stalbridge to his family home ( also the local pub/restaurant ) and he brings with him….a wife
Perfect and everyone is overjoyed, except they aren’t especially wily Lillian ( Seb’s Mum ) astute and strong willed she ‘feels’ all is not well, and of course it’s not! Far from it
What follows is a perfect psychological thriller, packed with great characters, twists and turns and all set in beautiful Dorset ( thrilled to see Yeovil mentioned where lived for 7 years just over into Somerset )
The author as always works her magic and brings us an intense and exciting read that once you start is difficult to stop
Brilliant 🤗

Shalini Boland's The Daughter-in-Law is multilayered with a narrative that jolts the reader when they least expect it. The opening is gripping and captures your attention from the very first page. It is a mind-bending thriller with suspense and intrigue.
Told from multiple perspectives, there is an intense power struggle between women as the main focus of this thriller. An intricate cat-n-mouse game is played between a domineering mother-in-law and her son's new bride at a family owned pub. As the plot develops, we discover that everyone appears to have hidden agendas. Boland throws multiple red herrings at you just as you think you have the story figured out.
It is necessary to suspend belief and roll with the story in order to fully enjoy The Daughter-in-Law. Although the plot slows down in the middle, the author pulls it all together and finishes on a high note. This is my first read by Shalini Boland and I look forward to reading more of her work.
The Daughter-in-Law is available on November 4th.
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for sharing this twisty story with me. I appreciate your kindness.

Sebastian parents are shocked when he goes on holiday and comes back with a wife in tow. Determined to make a go of it Caroline gets stuck into helping out at the pub thr family own. But there's something strange and she can't put her finger on it.
A great read full of different twists. I didn't see that coming. An addictive book that is easy to read. I couldn't put it down!
Shalini Boland writes some crazy thrillers. I lost some sleep due to staying up late to finish this. This was twisted in every possible way. I love these kinds of books because i can’t figure the twists out. The daughter in law is like a definition of psychological suspense. Caroline and Seb get married and she moves to the UK. An overbearing mother in law a sweet father in law a basically built in family for Caroline who has no family. I have some serious booklash. I am looking forward to what twisted journey Shalini is going to take me on next
Your new husband has a shocking secret. Would your mother-in-law kill to protect it?
Another very enjoyable book from Shalini Boland. Seb and Caroline meet and not long after marry in Australia. They then return to the UK where Seb's family lives and Caroline will meet his family. Well, she receives quite a frosty welcome and does not understand why her new mother-in-law Lillian seems so cold towards her. What makes this even harder for Caroline is that they are living in the same house as her new in-laws who run a pub. There bedrooms are right next door to each other and Caroline is struggling in this environment which is quite understandable. Certain events occur and the blame is blame is put on Caroline by Lilian, but is she guilty of this or is there more at play.
Great story that moves at a reasonably fast pace, realistic characters and decent plot. Thank you to Netgalley , the author and publisher for a copy of the book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Shalini Boland has done it agin! I’ve read every single on of her books and have loved them all. The daughter in law is no different! Another 5 star.
When Seb comes home from a short trip to Australia his parents are thrilled to have him home, however they are less than impressed when he introduces them to his new wife Caroline. With Sebs previous relationship ending so very abruptly and they are worried he is on the rebound and may have rushed into his new marriage.
With Seb and Caroline only knowing each other a few weeks it is of little surprise that both of them have secrets. When Caroline discovers one of Seb secrets she’s angry and determined to get some answers out of him but with Seb unwilling to reveal all they hit a brick wall.
Caroline also has her own agenda there is much more to her than meets the eye and she is a woman on a mission to find answers and will do just about anything to get them. Then one drunken night Caroline reveals her secrets to Felix ,Seb’s brother everything changes.
Things take a surprising turn for everyone. Secrets, lies and truths are uncovered and for no one life will ever be the same again. As one secret years a whole family apart.
I loved reading the daughter in law and although I did guess a few things this didn’t take anything away from the read as there were still plenty of surprises around every corner and a fabulously unexpected ending that I hadn’t seen coming at all and I love a good ending.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
I'm a fan of Boland's thrillers because they're always quick and fun. I was engaged in the family dynamics of this story throughout, although I will say that it wasn't as suspenseful as I would've liked and the ending fell a little flat- I kept waiting for a crazy twist that just didn't deliver. Not my favorite by her but will continue to auto-buy.
