If you haven't read a Shalini Boland book before, it's time to change it. I've loved all the books I've written by her but I think this is my favourite yet. Read in almost one sitting, I couldn't put it down.
My opinions of the 2 main characters kept changing throughout the book. One minute I was team Caroline the next team Lilian, I mean after all she was trying to keep her family safe. But then she would be toxic so my allegiance turned back to Caroline.
Sometimes I have suspected the ending of the many psychological thrillers I read but this one completely blindsided me.
A wonderful read
Shalini Boland is one of those authors whose psychological/ domestic thrillers are ones you can count on to be easy, twisty reads where unexpected events leave you wanting more. Having said that, this is a perfectly good read, but not her best. The twists were telegraphed, and while shocking, not unexpected. Except for the final reveal which really did surprise me.
Caroline has left her life in Australia to move in with her new husband, Seb, and his family in Britain. She's nervous but eager to get to know his family, especially since they will all be living and working together at his family's restaurant. Winning over her new mother in law, however, will be a challenge.
Lilian is thrown for a loop when her younger son comes home from vacation with a wife. She can't bring herself to like Caroline, nice as she seems to be. She feels Seb has rushed into this marriage, especially considering his past history.
Once again, Shalini Boland has written an amazing thriller that kept me gripped. I always look forward to her books. Thanks so much to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Shalini Boland for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review!
Seb Fletcher comes back from an Australian vacation with a surprise for his parents – he got married! Not only that, but he and his new bride Caroline are going to live in his childhood bedroom above his family’s esteemed pub, the Royal Oak. The happy couple’s news gets a frosty reaction from Seb’s mom Lilian. Caroline pitches in at the pub, but things are a nightmare from the start – a nasty coworker, a handsy customer, a messed-up order – and Lilian’s razor-sharp gaze catching every misstep. Things go from bad to worse when Caroline finds out Seb was keeping a pretty big secret from her, and someone in the family will go to great lengths to keep the truth hidden.
You might think this going to be your typical evil mother-in-law story, but it’s so much more than that, as Caroline seems to be making plenty of enemies. I love the way you don’t know who to trust. Sure, Lilian seems awful, but she’s in shock over the hasty nuptials and just wants to protect her boy… nothing wrong with that, right? And Caroline seems sweet and wanting to fit in, but it seems like she might be hiding something too.
Shalini Boland is a must-read author for me, so I cracked this one open without even reading the blurb. We know right off the bat that someone’s going to be killed, and that someone else is burying that body. Is it one of our leading ladies, or is someone else the murderer in their midst? Boland delivers twist after delicious twist, and the action keeps coming all the way up until a brilliant WOW moment at the very end. I couldn’t put this book down – finished it in less than a day!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. I love Shalini's books. Full of suspense, twists, secrets at the end Caroline and Seb get married after meeting on line. Caroline moves back to the UK to live with Seb and his family, and help run their pub. People are out to get her; secrets about Seb's past come out. But wait! Caroline has a huge secret herself that puts her in danger. Great book!
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. Shalini is one of my favorite thriller writers. That being said, I feel I can only give this one four stars. Not because it wasn't good, but because I felt more of this one was predictable and not quite as much suspense as previous books. I figured out Caroline's secret fairly quickly so nothing seemed much of a shock to me. But it was still a good book with a good plot in the middle. Still recommend it!
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the copy of The Daughter-In-Law. I can usually count on this author to provide an easy, fun read so I’m not sure why this one was not for me. The story was weak and there were no sympathetic characters. The writing was still good, so if you’re looking for an easy read this might be the book for you.
Thanks to #NetGalley and the publishers for an #ARC of #TheDaughterInLaw
Fans of Shalini Boland will not be disappointed with the newest book. An enjoyable read which throws in twists, just when you think you've figured it out.
Okay this book was officially creepy in a totally good way! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!
The Daughter-in-Law
by Shalini Boland
Thank you, NetGalley, and Bookouture for the arc for review.
The Daughter -in Law had many twists and turns. No Road map, but you are in for the ride. Speeding on sharp, blind turns, and the ride is intense, Then the road to end all ends. Blew me away. Bravo
The Daughter-in-Law is a must read. It’s a little slow to get going but once you’ve got the characters sorted, it’s hard to put down. You won’t see the twists coming and just when you think it’s as warped as possible the epilogue takes it to another level.
Thank You to Bookouture, NetGalley and Shalini Boland for the opportunity to devour this ARC.
Best thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. I delved into this well written book completely and thoroughly entertained.
I have read all of Shalini’s novels and this is another cracker. An accomplished novelist who gets straight into the plot, with great, believable characters. Read this in a day and now to wait for the next one!
Unexpected Secrets…
Secrets will out in this unpredictable suspense but they may well be unexpected. A stunning country house, a new marriage, a wholly dysfunctional family unit and more lies and secrets than you can shake a stick at. With a credible cast of often dubious characters, a plot peppered with twists and turns aplenty and a menacing undercurrent this tale draws in the reader from the offset and does not let go until the final, perhaps unexpected, denouement.
Shalini Boland rarely disappoints, she writes consistently good thrillers and this is no exception, from the outset you know one of the characters is going to meet a sticky end, but who?
Wow , yet another brilliant book by this author. I’ve been a fan for a few years and this latest one is yet another best seller. Great omg , open mouthed twist halfway through and another unexpected one near the end . I absolutely loved the characters and the setting of the pub in the Devon countryside. Definitely well worth a read , I will highly recommend this book to my audience

Thank you, NetGalley, Bookouture and Shalini Boland for this ARC.
Mixed feelings, I cannot say that this book kept me in excited since I felt like it was pretty easy to figure out most of everyone's secrets. The characters were all unlikable and the ending felt kind of rushed. I usually enjoy books by this author but this one was somewhat a disappointment. Don't me wrong, I did enjoy reading it but I felt like the suspense was missing.
It certainly didn’t disappoint and while it was a bit obvious that one of the characters wasn’t who they were claiming to be, it certainly surprised me when it was revealed. Shalini Boland definitely knows how to keep the reader gripped and guessing.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ + stars
I went into this story knowing nothing about except it was written by Shalini Boland!
~ Yep! I am a fan this is my ninth novel!
Story is told from the POV of Caroline, the daughter in-law and Lilian, the mother-in –law. There are a few chapters now n then by sisters Michelle and Amy.
Story starts with Sebastian ‘Seb’ Fletcher is returning to his parent’s home in the UK from a vacation in Australia with a surprise ~ a wife! The courtship was rather short. Seb and Caroline met on-line several months ago and finally met three weeks ago and are now married.
However, Lillian Fletcher is not pleased with this surprise. She believes they need a proper courtship and wedding perhaps a year from now.
Lillian and Brian Fletcher are the landlady and landlord of the sixteenth century ‘Royal Oak’ a beautiful as well as very successful English pub. Seb graduated from catering school nine years ago and is now taking over most of the running of the place. Older brother Felix is a talented chef – he and his wife and new baby live in an apartment on the premise. The other members of the family live in an apartment about the pub.
Caroline knew she too could help with the family business as has experience running a bar in Australian however, Lillian doesn’t trust her. In fact, accidents and mix-ups are happening and Caroline believes she is being set-up.
Hmmm
The Prologue of someone digging a grave had me looking for the suspicious person most of the book. In the back of my mind I suspected everyone! I had one tiny piece I was sure I had correct but it was only a feeling nothing to really back it up; for the most part I was ~ Wrong!!
I knew I was in for twists and turns!
Also was sure that Ms. Boland would not disappoint!!
I always enjoy reading the Author’s Notes and/or Acknowledgements. In this case Ms. Boland gives special thanks to Michelle Nelson and Mariah Maudlin as both readers earned starring roles.
How cool is that?
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley.

Caroline and Seb meet online and after a whirlwind romance get married and come back to Sebs family home to surprise the family! The very dysfunctional Fletcher family who unknown to us have many deep dark secrets which as the book evolves we become aware of, plus Caroline isn’t exactly who she says she is!
Such an intruiging mix that with interest, enthrall and keep you captivated from start to finish!
