The Girlfriend is another worthy piece of work from one of my favourite authors. Unsurprisingly I absolutely loved this book! I have now read eleven of K.L. Slater's books and found each of them so masterfully written and compelling. The Girlfriend has many surprising twists and turns. It features Jennifer whose husband, Cole Fincham dies suddenly. They have two children, Miller, age thirteen and five-year-old Sylvie. Jennifer is devastated, then a lovely young woman arrives on her doorstep with a baby claiming the infant is Cole's.

I was so keen to find out what was going to happen next that I read The Girlfriend in a single sitting. Highly recommended with no hesitation so grab yourself a copy!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

Jennifer and Cole Fincham have it all. Two beautiful kids,a fabulous home, yes, life is serene. As Jennifer is prepping for a Halloween party she gets a visit from the police...Cole is dead, killed in a car accident. Her world implodes.
Whilst grieving her husband,Jennifer has another visitor..a woman she doesn't know called Sarah. Sarah says she is Coles Girlfriend..and the baby she's holding is Coles! There's more! She claims to have invested in Coles business to stop him going under,so now the house the cars, everything is hers.
Jennifer Is gobsmacked and checks with her lawyer, and yes it's all true. Afraid that she's now homeless,Jennifer agrees to a proposal from Sarah- that they all live together in the family home. Even though she's going along with it,for lack of other options,Jennifer feels somethings not quite right and hires an investigator to look into it.
An intriguing, pacey, twisty read with a few unbelievable moments at times, but on the whole a great read.

This story begins with our main characters being put in a devastating situation, as this very layered story progresses we uncover more and more lies being told. Although this book sometimes feels a little bit over complicated, it has short chapters and is easy to read, keeps you guessing until the very twisted ending.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the copy of The Girlfriend. This was an intricate story! So many characters were hiding secrets, so if you love learning peoples’ secrets, you will love this book. Those littles twists were surprising, but there were just a couple too many to feel realistic. The only character I felt for was Miller, because he had so much on his young shoulders. The author did a great job of showing how he was being a child forced to act like an adult. The epilogue felt tacked on to wrap everything up in a pretty bow by telling us what happened to everyone. This is a solid 3 star book. Not great, but not bad either.

Oh. My. God.

This book had me all entangled in my feelings of rage and indignation. So much so that I wanted to find ways to hex Sara and get her the hell off my pages.

Dramatic? Yes, but so am I.

Are you looking for a psychological thriller that will crawl it’s way beneath your skin and start slowly elevating your blood pressure?! This is the book. This is the one.

After the death of Jennifer’s husband, Cole, she quickly learns of his lover, Sara and their Child, Rory, and that all of her money, assets and home actually belong to Sara and to avoid being homeless she begrudgingly allows Sara and Rory to move in with her and her two children.

There are so many scenes where I wanted to literally scream at the antagonist whilst ripping my hair out. A true homage to how perfectly crafted thus personification of pure evil is.

Is a five star thriller.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Girlfriend by K.L. Slater was a fast paced thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. The author does a great job at developing the characters and creating tension that jumps off the page.
Cole and Jennifer lived a great life. When tragedy strikes. Jennifer learns just how strong she really is. But who causes this tragedy to happen and why.
This book was action packed and you never saw the twists coming. Highly recommend this book.

A fast-past read with unlikable female leads. The twists and suspense were enough to keep me reading until the end.

When Jennifer's husband Cole dies in a car accident before their Halloween party she wonders how she will manage without him & how will thirteen year old Miller & five year old Sylvie cope. Little does she realise that this is only the beginning of their problems. A young woman, Sara arrives on their doorstep with a young baby. She says he is Cole's son- & Jennifer has no doubt that this is true. Sara says that she is the owner of the house, that she had bankrolled Cole for a lot of loans. However instead of demanding Jennifer & her family get out, she suggests that they all live together so Rory can get to know his half brother & sister. Needless to say Jennifer is pretty horrified by the idea but agrees as it will give her some breathing space. But all is not as it seemed. Was Cole's death due to the car accident or was it something more sinister? What exactly does Sara want? It isn't going to end well that's for sure.

WOW! That was some read! There are loads of surprises & twisted characters. I loved it & couldn't put it down. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this brilliant book!

This was a fairly quick read for me and while I was intrigued by the synopsis this book just missed the mark. The storyline got a bit confusing towards the end while weaving together a few characters and tying everything up in a neat little bow. It was a good book but not necessarily one that would jump to the top of my recommendations list. For me this book is a solid 3 stars as it was an interesting premise but it sort of fell apart for me when the storylines were intertwining.

Amazon synopsis:
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognize the woman on our doorstep, with her buttery blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms.
As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts.
She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I know this will be hard to hear. But I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.’
My world implodes. And then she tells me that she owns our home – and that she’s not going anywhere…

The Girlfriend is yet again another utterly amazing and compelling read by KL Slater. Right from the very first page I just knew that I was going to be hooked on this read. Well I certainly wasn’t wrong as I truly couldn’t put this book down. Another fast paced and twisty read from this amazing author.

What a twisty story Slater has crafted! I was hooked on this book from the first few pages. I always desire for this to happen with a read and this had my attention from the beginning.

The Girlfriend is fast paced and I felt connected to the main characters and the children involved in the story. I would suggest that people who enjoy thrillers pick this up asap!

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy!

"K.L. Slater is a go to author for me when I feel like a good, fast paced, intriguing, suspense read", this is how I started one of my previous review for this author and that's why I always pick her books without even reading the blurb, and I've never been mistaken.
The Girlfriend is a clever, addictive page turner, fully packed with twists and turns and enough red herrings to keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing the entire time.
Great characters, great story, great book!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!

This book was stunning. Another author that I love everything from. She has a way of writing that hooks you in from the get go.

This was not the book for me. I felt the beginning was rushed and not enough backstory was given for me to feel truly invested in what was happening to the characters. The premise was contrived and just too much happening with no explanation.

If you like Gone Girl or Girl On The Train - this book is for you.

Synopsis: My husband’s dead. She’s at my door. She owns my home… When the doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death, I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep but she tells me that she is my husband’s girlfriend, that the baby in her arms is his son, and that she owns our cherished family home.

This thriller was psychological and intriguing from page one. It had multiple POV's and each chapter kept you guessing and guessing with each new character that they introduced. When I tell you I have never turned pages so quickly!!! This isn't your typical domestic thriller, it was a mind-bending read and I genuinely didn't expect any of the plot twists. I think the best part of this book was that the main character who the whole book resolves around, is dead and doesn't have his own POV in the book. This makes for a very compelling storyline where you genuinely don't have a CLUE who is telling the truth or in which direction it'll go. I love that one of the POV's is from the younger son, Miller. I think when a child has a POV its a very clever look into the mindset of a child compared to an adult.

The plot of this story is actually crazy and it takes multiple twists and turns, but it is all very very believable and well intertwined. By the end, every single loose thread adds up and you realise how well the story is told. My ONLY negative feeling about the book is that there was a very big build up and the ending didnt satisfy me in a way I thought it would. I prefer cliffhangers rather than tidy happy endings in thrillers and although the ending answered all the questions - it didnt satisfy me in the way K.L Slater's normal writing does. But all in all, a great, fast-paced read that I didnt want to put down!

The Girlfriend available from October 27th and I think it's also on Kindle Unlimited - if you want to find out what happens in the rest of the story.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Bookouture, for giving me this outstanding book in exchange for a review. It's made me want to pick up lots more of K.L Slater's work!
