A chapter was enough for me. Not what I was looking for I'm afraid and with so little to go off I have no idea whether this novel would have picked up.
Difficult to write a full review as only a sample chapter bur the premise is good. I think I need to read the previous books first though.
I loved AJ Pearce’s two previous books in this series so I was very excited to read a first chapter proof of the new book, Mrs Porter Calling! Written in the same fun way as the other books, it has made me very excited to read the new book when it’s out later this year!
A really inviting first chapter taster to the third title in A J Pearce's Emmy Lake series.
All the usual, expected warmth, scene setting and characterisation - I so wanted more! Really looking forward to reading the entire novel!
Fun first chapter featuring further adventures from the newly-wed Emmy and her madcap pals. If you like your 1940s fiction with extra fizz and froth, then look no further. Very much the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' version of the Blitz but I think we all need a bit of up-lit in our lives and by the looks of things various old friends from previous outings are making their reappearance. Fun and frolics await!
Such a delight to have a peek into Emmy and Buntys world again. AJ Pearce just captures this era wonderfully, I truly feel like I am reading a book written about my friends. I love all the detail, the manners, etiquette, rationing, camaraderie, make do and mend etc. I’m just transported to 1940’s London.
I’m already invested in helping them find a new lodger.
Countdown to getting this book on pre-order!
I’m not usually a fan of Second World War plucky heroines/ jolly hockey stick type stories but I did borrrow the first book in the series, Dear Mrs Bird, from the library via Borrowbox and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There where some very funny moments but also a fair bit of tragedy and danger. It’s a story of friendship, kindness and courage.
The first chapter of Mrs Porter Calling doesn’t really give me enough to form a full opinion but it does bring in some of the characters in the previous books in the series. In the first book I enjoyed the parts set in Emmy's work places. I’m assuming that will happen in subsequent chapters.
Considering the author is a good 10 years younger than me I think it’s quite clever the way she uses the language tone of that time especially the vocabulary. (The women's and girls' magazines of my childhood were still using that type of language in the 1950s and 60s). It comes across as authentic, almost as if the novel was written in that era.
I have to be honest here. I probably wouldn’t buy the book for myself but if I came across it in my library app I would probably borrow it. I would recommend the series to some friends/family members.
Thanks for the access to the snippet from Mrs Porters Calling! Was great to pick up with the characters that I’ve loved so much from the previous books and excited to read in full later this year.
In the words of Emmy, utterly "Smashing" and "terrifically good fun" - a sample to whet the appetite to read the whole book, this lovely excerpt captures a lot of what made the earlier books really shine - strong sense of the WW2 time period, same likeable characters, the 40's film lingo. Staying true to the era and characters that had previously been so endeared to, this felt like a warm hug from a dear friend and with the ongoing message of joy even in dark times, it feels close to home without being a pandemic book, so just the tonic a pandemic weary heart needs to escape with, Can't wait to read the rest of the book!
I’ve really enjoyed AJ Pearce’s previous books and I really shouldn’t have spoilt myself by reading the first chapter of the new exciting book.
I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the book once it’s published
This was just a taste of the book by providing the first chapter; but that's all it needs to get hooked, especially if you have read any of A J Pearce's earlier books.
Needless to say, this book featuring Emmy Lake is now added to my To Be ordered list!
This is an excellent first chapter - the series so far has been wonderful and I can’t wait for this book to be released!
The first chapter is very promising. Stories set during the war is something I tend to like and it's is a very interesting set-up. The writing style had me hooked. It's definitely going on my TBR-list.
Oh yesss! This was an excellent to start to the third book in this series and I cannot WAIT to read the full version!
Read the first chapter of this and absolutely loved it, going to have to get the whole book once it’s available!
It follows two best friends using their spare room in the house for lodging during the Second World War and I already loved the dynamics between the characters. It sounds like such a promising premise and I’m sure would be one that brings about interesting characters and stories.
This has whetted my appetite sufficiently that I’m really looking forward to more adventures from Emmy and friends!
Well my only disappointment was when I realised this was only 1 chapter, not the whole book!
Looking forward to reading the whole thing next year :)
Thank you for the opportunity to review this new novel.
I've read the first two books so it was lovely to meet the characters again. This first chapter seems promising for the rest of the book.
I, being an impulsive sort, and having loved the first two books in this series, didn't feel the need to read the synopsis of this before I downloaded the file. So it was with great disappointment that I realised only as I was a few minutes in that this is only a chapter sample.
Alas! It's still full of warmth and the lovely characters we got to know in the first two books, and I'm beyond looking forward to the full thing! I will just have to wait patiently and Do My Bit.
With thanks to netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to review the first chapter of Mrs Porter calling
I’ve read the previous two books and the first chapter doesn’t disappoint. It was easy to get back into the characters
Hopefully I will be able to review the whole book. '
