Brilliant, I adored the first 2 books in this series and this one lived up to their standards. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an advance copy, I will definitely be recommending.
Lovely first chapter and can't wait to read more. If you enjoyed Dear Mrs Bird it looks like you will enjoy this too.
I adore this series and will definitely be reading the latest once published. This first chapter has all its charm and cosines of the others, was a shame to have to stop reading!
I haven't read any of the Mrs Porter books before. The first chapter of this was fun and engaging. A light, fluffy comfort read, it bounced along and I would happily have read more. It's probably a little more commercial than I would normally read myself but based on this extract I would happily recommend it to readers of this genre. On such a small sample I'm not really in a position to say any more than this.
First chapter of the second book in this series
A great peak into what we can expect of this book
4 out of 5 stars
When I downloaded this book I did not realise it was a taster of the first chapter. It follows the style of the author’s previous books and I am sure it will be a very good read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Can’t believe I have 5 months to wait for the next instalment in this charming series! This was a very sweet little teaser chapter and I can’t wait to dive back in to the lives of these warm and lovely characters.
Looking forward to the complete novel.Really enjoyed the first two books in the series the characters kept me involved in their lives their story.#netgalley #panmacmillan
More cosy, heartwarming War Time Drama with Emmy Lake and all the gang in this third outing.
Just a sample chapter but if you liked the first two books in the series then you will be pleased to be back in the company of young Agony Aunt, Emmy trying to sort out the problems of her letter writers and her and the gang dealing with tribulations in their own lives and living with the fear, bombings and deprivations of life on the Home Front.
I love the Emmy Lake chronicles and literally can’t contain my excitement for this one. After the brief sneak preview I’m even more excited and can’t wait to catch up with my favourite characters.
After the last book I’m keen to see how Emmy is getting on with her new job role and ‘Yours Cheerfully’ as well as with Bunty and of course, the lovable Mr Collins.
It’s such a great wartime drama and Mrs Porter calling has set itself up to be a very good post runner from Yours Cheerfully. I loved this peek into the first chapter and I’m definitely left wanting more! Can’t wait to read the rest.
This is the first chapter of the third book in a series; I've read the first book.
There's a nice balance of cheerfulness and harsh reality; it's always good to be reminded that people living on the Home Front were living real lives (romance, tap dancing, school) and able to find pleasure in the world, even as they were struggling with rationing and air raids. The research is solid and makes me feel I'm in good hands.
However, there are definitely some "third book" issues in this excerpt - namely, the need to shoehorn in who all these people are and how they're interconnected and what happened in the previous two books, which leads to a mashup of names and quick descriptions. I know that I'd be flipping back to this chapter to be reminded of who's who.
The end of the chapter provides a nice hook - how will they pull off their plan? - and it's a significant issue that isn't commonly addressed in Home Front fiction (I can only think of one Mollie Panter-Downes short story that does), so I'd continue reading.
This is a series I'm unfamiliar with although I have seen many reviews of the previous books. From the chapter sampler, it seemed just as I imagined the books to be, atmospheric of the era with characters that you can engage with. I certainly would be interested in reading the full book, based on this.
Only reviewing the first chapter.
Not familiar with AJ Pearce but there was a nice introduction to characters and scene setting.
I’m a huge fan of AJ’s writing - nobody else writes WW2 fiction quite like she does, with such lightness of touch, wonderfully deft humour and rock solid research. I loved this opening chapter, continuing to relay the story of Emmy and Bunty and neatly setting up the storyline for this, the third in the series. Can’t wait to read the rest of Mrs Porter Calling. Thank you for this small taster!
Sad that this is an extract. Very excited for this book. It’s one that so many people I know will read as they love the series.
I thought this was the whole book not just a chapter, but I’ve enjoyed the escapism offered by A J Pearce’s previous two novels. From the first chapter it looks to set up well another enjoyable novel about the home front in World War Two and I’d be keen to read it.
To be fair I couldn't tell from this first chapter whether this is going to be as good as the first two or not but I'm looking forward to reading the whole thing.
This series has become one of my favourite comfort historicals, despite not shying away from the grimmer aspects of life in London during WWII. It was wonderful to be back with Emmy and Bunty again (and Guy, who is one of my favourite secondary characters).
While I prefer the audiobooks, as Anna Popplewell does a fantastic job with them, I can’t wait for this to be out next year!
A good first chapter I’ll look forward to reading the whole book. I had hoped we’d read more about being an agony aunt as that was what drew me to the book. I’ll just have to be patient!
Instantly interested in all of the characters. I haven't read any other books by this author so will look forward to reading the rest of this book
