Superb narration brings this audio book to life. The ups and downs in the life of Elizabeth of York, wife of Henry VII and mother of Henry VIII, are told clearly and convincingly in this fictional account. Told from her point of view, this is a well researched and absorbing story, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to Net Galley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve enjoyed a few of Alison Weir’s non fiction titles. Her knowledge of the Tudors is exceptional and although dense with detail, I’ve always found her books accessible to the lay reader. I was keen to see how she handles the subject matter as fiction and Elizabeth of York, The Last White Rose is a triumph.

The narration throughout is excellent; well balanced with clear character voices. The tale is linear and fir anyone unfamiliar with the background to the Tudors, it’s an easy to follow insight into this complex and turbulent period of the monarchy. What really worked for me were the details that brought individuals to life. From previous accounts, Elizabeth and her complex family history was never entirely clear to me. She seemed spirited, but the Machiavellian machinations of her life both before and after she entered court as Queen were jumbled. Alison Weir presents a highly plausible, and colourful account of her life, vivid in detail of places and events. I feel as though I’ve observed her story from a discreet distance and shared both her joys and sorrows. I founded the story of the princes in the tower particularly poignant, although it’s one I’ve known for well over 50 years.

Writing like this really brings history to life. It cements facts and when the author is so well informed, it makes the pleasure even greater. Historical fiction at its best and for me, even better than another popular author. Well paced and I was engrossed from start to finish.

My thanks to the publisher for a review copy via Netgalley.

These books are THE best. Alison Weir is an outstanding writer and I am a huge fan of her work and the books I’ve read from her so far. This one was a fantastic addition and I am always in awe at her ability to truly bring history to life.

She shines a spotlight on characters throughout history and gives them a voice. She tells their story as historically accurate as research and information allows so you get this beautiful fusion of fiction non fiction. You get an utterly immersive and fantastic read and learn a little about history along the way! They are so entertaining and addictive, I can never put them down.

This one centred around Elizabeth York and her life. She was one amazing character (or historical figure) to build the book around and I was well and truly hooked. We have King Richard, Henry 7th and young Henry 8, the princes in the tower, beheadings, exiles, fire, marriages, treason, unions and more. I mean, what more could we want?!

The chapters were split into time periods and I loved that. The way the story moved along was effortless and flowed seamlessly. The storytelling was excellent and the way the story was told had you properly invested. I always looked forward to returning to the book and the audiobook made for fantastic listening. I couldn’t pick out a bad thing about this book if I tried!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

I always devour anything to do with the Plantagenets & Tudors but I have neither read, nor listened to, very much about Elizabeth of York so I was delighted when Headline Audio sent me a copy of this in audiobook format, In exchange for an honest review..

I found this was more of a factual account of Elizabeth’s story, rather than other historical fiction which always seems to add extra drama and ‘bodice ripping’ to dramatise the tale. It was what I’ve come to expect from Alison Weir and this book was just as good as any of her others I have previously read.

As I have said, I listened to the audiobook which was narrated well by Nicky Diss. She was excellent at characterising the different people and their accents meant that I knew immediately who was speaking just by the intonation of her voice during that chapter.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in historical fiction and will be watching out for more of the narrator’s work in the future.

I already read the book ARC so I knew I enjoyed the writing style and the story before I started. The narrator was perfect. Her pacing was just right and the slight change in voice for different characters was spot on for me. I hope she narrates the rest of the series.
