This compact book is a treat for weather watchers. Beautifully presented, it is a detailed month-by-month compilation of interesting facts and figures. It includes information about the phases of the moon, cloud types, poems and weather stories. I enjoyed last years almanac and look forward to next years too.
What's not to love about an almanac obviously not half way through this but am enjoying the journey so far.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Weather Almanac 2023 is a information and fact book about good old British weather. The book takes data from 2021 and 2022 and uses this data as discussion points throughout the book. The book is divided into the months of the year and gives facts and information as well as some photographs of the weather and significant weather events through history. You can find detailed tables about the sunrises and sunsets throughout the year as well as moon phases and much more! I found the information interesting and enjoyed learning about the different weather events over history, too. This would make a great book to gift someone who loves meteorological information and studying data too.
Such a beautiful book both with regards to pictures and the writing.
It gives you a month by month guide of what to expect from the weather. It is very informative and also gives you an idea of how the seasons weather changes.
I enjoyed the historical side of the book and the various stories from other areas of the uk.
This is a great book but whilst it can be read as one I prefer to read it inline with the months, so It keeps me coming back throughout the year
We all experience the weather everyday, it impacts so much of our lives and, in the U.K., makes up quite a lot of our conversations. Despite this often I think we don’t always know what trends and patterns can be expected or much behind the science of it all. This almanac though is brilliant at giving that information.
Split into month by month segments and with an extensive appendix section at the back the author sets out what to expect, why certain weather happens in particular months and plenty of other facts along the way. There is plenty of practical information of both sun and moon rising and setting times and potential temperatures however my favourite sections were those that looked back on weather history of each month. Looking back sometimes several hundred years events really can and have been shaped by weather, from the creation of the London sewer system, writing of songs and music to weather causing disasters that have gone on to shape legislation.
While I read this straight through it is a book I’ll return to throughout the year to read in sections as we enter each new month.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I feel this book has enough for both seasoned observers of the natural world and complete novices like me to enjoy. It has some really interesting historical information for the months of the year, like statistical extremes, previous notable weather related events and weather phenomena to look out for at various times throughout the year.
I particularly like the little recap of the weather in the previous complete year of 2021. I read a lot of fiction and enjoy when there is a little recap in the introduction and despite this being clearly a non-fiction book, it still hit that spot for me.
I also enjoy the historical stories of how weather has impacted other areas of society, for example the section on "The Great Stink" from 1858 and how this led to changes in urban infrastructure.
Almanac's to me are to be referred back to regularly throughout the year and this is perfect for that purpose.
This weather almanac looks at both the previous year’s weather – significant storms, snowfall and rainfall and offers prediction on what 2023 will bring to us. The most fascinating part is that it also reminds us that extreme weather is nothing new, it brings backs historic gardens facts going back to 1600.. as for myself I have always relied on hard facts and strong evidence therefore I very much enjoyed this book!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC opportunity.
Thank you Collins Reference for this ARC.
Weather Almanac 2023 is a fascinating meteorological guide packed with information. The introduction contains a useful overview of the weather in the British Isles and a summary of the weather in 2021 for comparison. The monthly chapters outline weather extremes in each month, followed by a map view of the min/max temperatures. There’s also info on sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset times, phases of the moon, and significant weather-related events in the same month in history. It’s very well put together and the information on extreme weather in the past is particularly interesting.
This almanac looks at both the previous year’s weather – significant storms, snowfall and rainfall and offers prediction on what 2023 will bring. There’s the usual data about sunrises and sunsets, tide charts and average temperatures, but most interestingly, there are tidbits about severe weather from the past and longer entires about significant weather events and the often tragic cost in human life and property damage. At once an almanac and a quirky history text
I'm a fan of almanacs and I am always fascinated by facts, lore, and they always make learn something new.
This one was good and I learned more about English WEather.
Lovely, recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I got into reading almanacs through lockdown, when I borrowed a couple of e books from the library and then bought some at the start of 2021 iand 2022 n hardback which were a companion through the year. This is my first weather almanac and just in the first few pages I learnt a lot - the origins of 'being inthe doldrums' and also that we really have 5 seasons a year in the UK which makes a lot of sense! I've dipped into the first few months of next year and can already see I'm going to find this really interesting. The illustrations are lovely, I would have liked more of them ideally throughout the book, but the information is really crammed in, so I think there just wasn't the room! I think this would make an excellent Christmas gift for anyone interested in the weather of the British Isles.
Thank you for the ARC.
Truly beautiful and we'll put together. I love this series and this is a fantastic edition. Will make a great present/stocking filler for Christmas.
I really enjoyed the 2023 Almanac seasonal but this just wasn’t the same. Too much unexplained information, formatting didn’t work electronically and it just wasn’t filled with interesting information. It’s such a shame but just missed the mark for me.
This is a wonderful resource and would make a much appreciated gift for any weather enthusiast.
I was delighted by the wealth of content contained in the almanac.
There were details of moon phases and sun/moon set and rise times. There is also weather facts for each month which I found very interesting.
Lots of information, both historical and 2023, including moon phases, weather facts, famous meteorologists, statistics, anecdotes and much more. I got this as a gift for my husband as he likes that sort of thing. It's a good stocking filler for anyone who is interested in weather facts.
Thanks to Net Gallery & Storm Dunlop for the Book.
