As a whole this didn't work for me.
I didnt find myself engaging with the storyline or characters.
I found myself struggling to pick up the book due to this.
I hope others see something in it, that I did not.
Song of the Sea follows a young woman, Elise, in 1755 as she travels from her home in Guernsey to meet her husband in the New World. Nothing there is as she expected.
The characters are all underdeveloped and, while I could understand the plight of traveling to a new place during that time period, I did not feel transported there by this story. The novel’s voice is also a bit odd, as though one could capture a 1755 setting by using the occasional formal-sounding word. There was a lot going on, yet none of it was very well explained. Overall I was not drawn into this story or any of its characters - my favorite thing about this book, unfortunately, is its cover.
Thanks to Netgalley and Cranthorpe Millner for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
"Song of the Sea" by Mya Roberts is a beautifully written account of Elise's journey from her sheltered upbringing in Guernsey and subsequent relocation to Nova Scotia, Canada and the harsh realities of surviving as a fisherman's wife. Set in the late 1700s and early 1800s we see glimpses of war and how life changes in this remote outpost.
