I adore Clarke's use of remote, isolated locations to trap her characters in increasingly dangerous situations. 'The Hike' is no different. We follow four friends as they undertake a hike through beautiful Norway but of course not everything will go to plan.
I loved reading this, the location is stunning and atmospheric. and there is plenty of drama to go around. Clarke writes this from each of the four characters perspectives which enables the reader to get a good understanding of all of them as become endeared to all of them as well. I loved each of their different stories they have to tell and they are a very likeable group of people.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for an advance copy.

Loved this book- very well paced and kept my interest throughout.
Four female friends each with their own problems go on a very different holiday hiking in Norway. They get caught up in a local crime and there is a killer on their tail whilst they tackle bad weather and their own inexperience of the environment they find themselves in.
Very well written and enjoyable read- highly recommend.

This book has an exciting plot with lots of twists and turns. It was well written and held my interest. Although admittedly it was slow at the start but picked up as it went along nicely. It was an entertaining read and I thoroughly enjoyed the story, well written and exciting at times. My first book by this author but would definitely be interested in reading more of her books for sure!

The hike was a thrilling read…… Wow! What a book! I couldn't read it fast enough. The tension and pace were absolute magic! Brilliantly unsettling, with characters so deftly woven that you never quite know who – if anyone – you can trust. Another riveting and powerful psychological thriller from this talented author.

Liz, Maggie, Joni and Helena have been best friends since high school. Every year, the four women take time away from their busy lives with families and careers to holiday together. This year, it's Liz's choice of destination, and in a departure from their usual poolside holiday somewhere hot and sunny, Liz has chosen a hiking trip through the Norwegian mountains.

As close as the four women are, each of them has something they're not sharing with the rest of the group: a trial separation, an accidental pregnancy, career burnout, betrayal. As they hike into the beautiful Norwegian landscape, and unpredictable weather, things begin to unravel. Will this trip bond the women, as it has done in the past...or will it break them for good?

I really enjoyed this twisty little thrill ride of a novel. The characters are beautifully realised and relatable, the trip into the mountains is genuinely tense, and I love how the author peeled each protagonist like an onion as the story progressed, allowing us to find out their secrets, motivations, and rivalries. In thrillers like this, female friendship groups are often just a bunch of petty women undermining each other, and one of the things I loved here was that although they definitely had their issues, the women were genuinely supportive of each other and their long-lasting relationships meaningful and sincere.

I will definitely be recommending this one - five stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher, who granted me a free ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

This new release by Lucy Clarke was well worth the wait! An excellent take on the locked room mystery, set in the wilderness during a hike. Scary and incredibly suspenseful!

Another corker of a novel from Lucy! She writes so well and with such depth I felt I was there! I read this in less than a day, loved it!

I read this within a day. I found it hard to put down. It started with a death, yet didn't say who it was, but I resisted the urge to scan the last chapter. It wasn't who I thought it was, but there was the odd tear in my eye by the end anyway. I was also wrong about who the killer was!! A pageturner!

Thanks first to Lucy Clarke, the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.

I’ve just finished ‘The Hike’ in a frantic two hour sitting!! Absolutely unable to put it down! This book is beautifully descriptive I felt like I really was on the hike!! There are twists, and turns, the big reveal and a huge shock. A story of friendship, discovery, betrayal, loss and fear!!

10/10 would absolutely recommend.

A good thriller that I did enjoy. I did feel it was missing something, it kept me interested throughout but the ending seemed a little rushed. I am looking forward to reading more from the author in the future.

Lucy Clarke does it again. I ADORE Lucy's writing. It's addictive, its fast paced, and it's just brilliant.
The Hike is about a friendship group who go hiking in the Norwegian wilderness up a big mountain called Blafjell. Through their journey together we find out the strengths of each character and their abilities to get through this huge hiking journey organised by Liz.
Through the twists and turns, we find out varying secrets and traits about the characters. With their backpacks heavy and the pure exhaustion from the challenge, what could possibly go wrong?

I simply could not put this book down and was constantly waiting for the next twist to happen. It was an incredible story that was thrilling and exciting, and I could so vividly imagine the mountainous ranges and the scenery. I absolutely cannot wait to gift this book to friends and family when it comes out because it was just amazing.
Lucy's writing and stories are always so fast paced and simply addictive.

After reading a few of this author’s books I was excited to read this latest title which I had heard a lot about ahead of its release in April.

‘The Hike’ by Lucy Clarke is about a group of four friends, Maggie, Liz, Helena and Joni, who take an annual trip away every year and this year, Liz’s choice is to go hiking in the Norwegian wilderness. Although it’s not everyone’s choice the girls still rally together for the time they treasure so much. A three day hike to a famous mountain and enjoying the outdoors can’t prove that daunting can it? Well not until stories of a woman’s body being found arise and soon secrets threaten to be discovered along with a potential killer on the loose.

I devoured the first half of this book in one day and could have finished the rest if not for time restraints through the week. Another suspenseful thriller is built up, the characters introduced to give you the information to relate to them along this journey. I did find the plot slowed a little towards the end and I was a little disappointed with the ending, feeling it wasn’t quite wrapped up as it could’ve been but nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed this book and did feel totally immersed in the ‘wild’ environment described by the author in her recognisable writing style. Would definitely recommend, especially for fans of previous titles by Clarke.

I love Lucy Clarke’s books and have devoured them all - I was obsessed with The Blue when I first read it.

Fit me, this just wasn’t her best work, I will continue to read everything she writes, she is an auto buy author, but I just found the plot a little repetitive and she’s definitely done better. Just not for me.

Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read The Hike by Lucy Clarke ahead of the publication date of 27th April 2023.
This was such a wonderful read, a story about 4 friends on a hike in Norway where things don't go to plan.
The characters of Liz, Maggie, Helena and Joni were just so relatable to a girl group on holiday together which is a tradition they have done for years. The book was set in the mountains and cabin in Norway and you could just feel yourself on the journey the way the author described the beauty of the journey.
I just really enjoyed this book, was so well written and there were a few twists at the end which I didn't see coming, I don't often feel sad at the end of a book that I have finished it but I did with this one, the characters were so well developed and interwoven with the story you felt like you knew them.
5 star read, would definitely recommend. This is the first book I have read by Lucy Clarke and I will definitely be looking to read her other work.

Four friends head out on a hike in the Norwegian mountains for which they are entirely unprepared, and face dangers both from the elements but also from someone else who is also stalking the mountains.

It's quite a quick and enjoyable read, definitely worth picking up a copy if you enjoy a travel-based thriller, but for me this didn't quite match up to the quality of some of her other novels. Some of the imagery was a bit repetitive and the same phrases were used repeatedly.

It would be a 3.5 stars from me, if that was an option

It started off a little slowly and I wondered if I would finish it - but then suddenly it kicks up a gear and its a pacy, heart in your mouth story. Stunning scenic descriptions mixed with terrifying heartstopping cliffhangers. PUsh past the first 3 chapters and you wont be disappointed.

A female body lies at the base of Blafjell Mountain in Norway, the only silent witness to what has happened?? Maggie, Liz, Helena and Joni are old friends from school days. This is their annual ‘reconnect’ trip, very different from their normal lounge around the pool break away. Hiking boots, heavy backpacks, wild camping, stunning scenery, what could possibly go wrong? Well, I’m sure you’ve guessed it’s a catalogue of errors from start to finish. The mistakes are wide ranging, from crass stupidity to thoughtlessness and so things that could go wrong, certainly do. However, not everything that happens on Blafjell is the friends fault, far from it.

The pace of the novel is slow initially but picks up considerably once the hike has got underway and then it varies from a brisk walking speed to hurtling pell mell down the mountainside. The atmosphere is very good, the Norwegian setting provides and adds a great deal of mood and ambience to the developing drama. This heightens and deepens the group dynamics which are in constant flux with moments of joy and liberation which contrasts effectively with the building fearful dread and suspense. None of the characters are especially likeable but this adds to the plot rather than detracts with some of the Norwegian characters giving cause for concern and worse. There are some scenarios where time seems to stand still which are really good as you are anticipating the next bad thing. The sense of mystery escalates, it starts uneasy then blooms to full on danger, there’s a mystical element too which is intriguing and so there’s plenty going on to keep you glued to the pages.

Overall, once this gets going it’s a very immersive and entertaining read.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins, HarperFiction for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

When four friends go on a hike in the wilderness it sets off a chain of events driven by underlying lies and tensions .very tense read keeping you engrossed right up to the end .

I absolutely devoured this thrilling tale involving four friends who push their limits with a killer on the loose. There is an eclectic mix of characters which adds emphasis to the story, each having their own troubles - whether its addiction, a marriage falling apart or falling pregnant whilst not being maternal in the slightest. They all have to put their problems and differences aside to put themselves through the ultimate a test - a challenging hike. What they don’t know is that there is something going on in those woods… something they need to get away from before it comes looking for them.

Completely and utterly.. fine. Not Lucy Clarke’s best work by any means, but not terrible either. Just fine.

Joni and Liz were great characters, but I found myself not being able to distinguish between Helena and Maggie well into the book, and I didn’t massively care either? Erik’s character was well written but, again, I didn’t hugely care about the other three men or what they became entangled in.

Probably wouldn’t recommend this one to anyone; I’d encourage you to check out Lucy Clarke’s back catalogue instead.
