I’ve read one book before by this author, but saw this pop up a lot over social media. A really good psychological thriller
3.5 stars rounded up
I enjoyed this authors writing style but the story felt a little bit slow for me and longer than it needed to be
Once again, let’s be honest, I’m not quite sure how to review this book.
On one hand it was a nice read, quite atmospheric and interesting relationships and characters that did not seem skin deep.
I also enjoyed the amount of new words I learned (thanks, Kindle, for the help!)
On the other hand, I wasn’t a fan of the culprit reveal (didn’t come as too surprising) and the clock, oh my gosh, the clock… for the life of me I couldn’t see why it was there! So much attention to it in the plot, but I honestly don’t think it added anything but confusion of why such a scientific bunch were all experiencing this supernatural phenomenon and if it indeed was supernatural, I’m not impressed :D
Anyhow, again 3 stars for this book, bang in the indecisive middle.
I enjoyed the book, but at times it annoyed me.
Thank you for the ARC, NetGalley!
Seductive and twisted. Highly recommended! Readers, find some quiet alone time to settle in with this one because you won't stop reading until you've turned the final page. Highly recommended to fans of mysteries, suspense and thrillers.
This is tense, gripping and completely addictive. I have felt as though I have been watching the events of this one play out. This is realistic and believable, guaranteed to send shivers down the spine of the reader.
This has been completely unpredictable and been a book I have devoured. I literally thought I had this figured out then BANG, a twist thrown in that completely pulls the floor from under you.
A fast paced, twisty mystery thriller that I enjoyed just as much as Lexie’s last book!

Thank you to the publisher for the arc!
I read a lot of crime fiction and find that there are quite often trends in book writing where you may read the same kind of plot line and twist in various books. Sometimes that works well if its a new angle, other times, it doesnt quite hit the mark. For me, Bright and Deadly Things was the latter, unfortunately, the storyline didnt really grab me and I wasnt invested in the characters. But other reviewers have really enjoyed it, so it may well be me and my reading mood. Thanks for the chance to read it
This was not an easy book to get into. For a start there was a lot of unnecessary narrative, in my opinion, which did not add anything to the story. But I carried on as I wanted to know who was guilty.
Parts of this were okay but on the whole it lacked pace and energy. Quite enjoyed the character descriptions as they were fairly realistic.
Overall a three star rating from me.
I have devoured every single one of Lexie Elliott's books, so I was super keen to get my hands on this one.
In her classic style we have a small selection of characters, and a mysterious death to puzzle over. I really enjoyed the setting of this book, and the descriptions of the mountains and countryside. An added element was the hauntingly eerie grandfather clock, which appeared as a malevolent influence on the characters. I had to take the batteries out of my living room clock whilst reading this, as I became increasingly aware of the ticking noise.
Unfortunately I did guess 'whodunnit' quite early on, but that may just be because I'm so used to the authors writing style.
Definitely worth a read this one
I found that I was totally captivated by the narrative voice and followed Emily's suspicions, completely unable to form my own theories and therefore totally surprised when truths were revealed. However, I found the murder of Sofi - and her entire character - to be the least interesting mysteries of the entire plot. The picturesque setting and the link with academic scholars and research was a fresh approach to many current mystery novels. I'm also outraged at the character development of Jana, as I had grown to like and even pity her character. There were lots of tiny sub-plots, one or two less may have allowed for a more captivating development of other plot stories; having a murder, break-ins, fertility struggles, affairs, etc all within one story covers a huge range of topics, some slightly needlessly.

Thank you Netgalley and Atlantic Books for the advance copy in exchange for my review.
I really enjoyed the premise of this book, the atmospheric location and a chalet with no electricity full of young academics and of course a murder! The opening chapter is strong and draws you in quickly.
The book itself is very well written and the character development is excellent, but for me it was lacking the tension and drama I craved all the way through. It became very repetitive and slow in the middle section and the ending felt like a bit of a let down.
The scene setting of the mountains seemed to be a bit sporadic, not as descriptive as I would have liked to make me really feel like I was actually there.
I really liked the spooky grandfather clock theme and the past inhabitants diaries being revealed running through the storyline but even this I feel could have been ramped up to make it more tense and eerie. There were also a few things that were never really explained, sort of a half hearted foray into the supernatural that didn’t actually go anywhere.
I did, however, get a mini crash course in IP and patenting which I didn’t know I needed.
I am sure many will love this book, but it just didn’t work for me unfortunately.
3 Stars.
I am afraid that I found this book hard to connect with. I think it must have been my fault because all the other reviewers seemed to love it, so I am sorry that it wasn't for me, and wouldn't put anyone else off reading it.
The story was great, i enjoy the scenary in Chalet and the Alps scenary. There two cases here, about patent claim and murder, i think there is link between cases but its not. Beside that there is mysterious grandfather clock in Chalet who have ability to draw people negative side, give glimps of vision. The wildfire event was so scary, i am glad Emily find Julie and help her.

Emily is a recently-widowed Oxford professor who goes to the university-0wned Alps chalet with some colleagues and students. Before she leaves her home is broken into, and once at the extremely rustic chalet tensions rise among the group and a student goes missing. The perpetrator must be one of their group. This is a slow-burn suspenseful story with a strong female lead character. I enjoyed the setting and the way the lead character rose to the challenge and relied on her own strength to make it through.
Hooked me in from the very start!it's a bit different from the typical thriller/ domestic noir but it was a really nice change to come across a bit of a more original plot and with some really interesting and unique characters. A few really good twists and turns that kept me guessing and I just really enjoyed this one
