The beginning writing style was not for me, I didn't enjoy the humour, but I was never a fan of his televised humour.
I did get better towards the end so I would have finished the book.
I'm sure many will love the book but unfortunately not for me

I only got to read the two-chapter sampler but I definitely want to read the rest now I've had a taste.

I didn’t realise that this was merely a sampler and I don’t usually read samplers. However, what I read was certainly wonderfully enticing…..Mortimer can definitely engage a reader with ease!

This was only a few chapters to read from Bob Mortimer's latest book called The Satsuma Complex
it was a hit with me. I loved it and had me laughing out aloud in several places. Bob has a way of writing that just draws you in and I always find his books hard to put down. So if you are having a down day, pick up one of his books they will have you in laughter from the very first few pages.

Bob. You did it again and I even got my Hubby to read your latest book once I purchased a Hard copy. He may not be the fastest of readers but he finished it in the end and said "That was a great book!" So Hats off to you - you have another fan!!!

I highly recommend this book

Whilst I realise this was only the opening chapters, I don't feel this book is for me and I won't be seeking out the full copy. I didn't enjoy the writing style and couldn't engage with the characters. However, I'm sure others will love it.

This review is for the really enjoyable first two chapters only of what is Bob Mortimer's debut novel.

I've loved watching Bob on TV for many years, mostly with Vic Reeves but more recently with Paul Whitehouse, and he never fails to make me laugh. His constant stream of weird and wacky one-liners are a constant joy, and I was so pleased to see this continue in his fiction writing. I, for one, have never considered (until now) whether my preference is for even or uneven surfaces!

The story is already setup very well in these early stages, and I can't wait to get my hands on the full novel to see where Bob takes it!

UPDATE: I have now listened to the full story after being lucky enough to get a copy of the audiobook from my local library, and I am happy to say that I will not be changing my 5-star review!

The plot, very well setup in the first two chapters, was expertly woven by Bob, constantly evolving and never seeming to stall. I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud listening to the interactions between Gary and the other characters, particularly Grace and Wayne. I loved the use of the squirrel as Gary's sounding board to regularly help him make sense of his current predicament, advising him to "think around" conclusions he had arrived at. I also thought that Lassoo's imagined comments, conveyed to Gary just with a look, were a great way of capturing Gary's feelings at the end of chapters.

Finally, Bob as the main narrator, along with Sally Phillips narrating the part of Emily, both did a fantastic job of telling the story, and capturing both the tension and in particular the humour of the tale.

Bob, in the unlikely event you ever read this, please get working on a follow-up ASAP!

I enjoyed this taster of the book. I'm a big fan of BM and you could feel his voice coming out through Gary in his obsessions and quirks. Will be downloading the rest of the book to read! Hard to star rate as I need to read it all first

I ended up buying copies as a Christmas gifts for my partner and my sister-in-law, they both seemed to enjoy reading it!

It feels a bit unfair to judge a book on just two taster chapters as many of my favourite books have had slow starts, but unfortunately this didn’t grip me enough to want to read the rest of the book. The main character is quirky and naive and he has clearly been set up by someone more savvy than him to explore a mystery, but there isn’t much more depth than that to either the hero or the storyline at this stage.

Only the first two chapters were provided for review, and perhaps not enough to give an accurate evaluation, but there is certainly enough to give you a flavour of what you might expect from the debut novel of Bob Mortimer. The writing is simple and clear, the situation well-established, with plenty of wacky characters and witty dialogue. Where it's going is anyone's guess, but I would say I was entertained enough to want to find out and be assured that it would be a fun and enjoyable read.

I have enjoyed reading this taster and will definitely look forward to reading the book when I have the opportunity.

If you consider bob mortimer to be a highlight of watching would I lie to you?, then I think you’ll like this book. You wouldn’t imagine that the perfection of the Theft and Shrubbery story could be mirror so well in a fictional setting yet here we are.

There’s a familiar homey charm in the way bob mortimer tells a story that translates perfectly into the prose of this novel. It doesn’t boast great creative literary features but captures attention in the wonderful and unique observations of the world surrounding its lead character of Gary.

I was sent the first few chapters of this book....I was enthralled by the character and was disappointed to have it end after 2 chapters. I have since gone and ordered the book so I can finish it.

Love Bob as a comedian, and this novel just cemented his talent.

The start of this is really enjoyable actually. No idea where it’s going or what’s going to happen but I think the writing style and the humour so far is appealing and catches the eye. It means I will definitely be picking this up either on kindle or from the shops to try. Definitely worth a read.
