I have read several novels from from Robert Bryndza and have always enjoyed his writing style within the crime thriller genre. This book was no different the plot was exciting and kept me guessing, and the characters engaging and relatable. I would certainly recommend this to lovers of crime thrillers and fans of Robert Bryndza.
Another great story in the Kate Marshall series. Kate has a near death accident and gets hired by her hospital roommate to find a child that has been missing for 11 years. There are many twists and turns and all of the characters are well developed.
Bryndza has written another great mystery! I read the first Kate Marshall (Nine Elms) and really enjoyed it. This is the 4th in the series, and really good (no idea how I missed 2 and 3). This novel can be read as a standalone. The case this time is a missing child - from 11 years ago.
I really like the characters of Kate and Tristan. Kate is multi-layered, and this book takes her in a different direct, requiring her to lean on Tristan a bit more. Their partnership is developing nicely.
"When Private Investigator Kate Marshall is rushed to hospital after being pulled into a riptide current in the sea, the near-death experience leaves her shaken. During her recovery, she befriends Jean, an elderly lady on the same ward. Jean tells the harrowing story of how her three-year-old grandson, Charlie, went missing eleven years ago during a camping trip on Dartmoor.
By the time Kate is well enough to go home, she's agreed to take on the case, but when Kate and her trusty sidekick Tristan start to look at the events of that fateful night, they discover that Jean has a dark past that could have put Charlie in jeopardy.
Was Charlie abducted? Or did he fall into Devil's Way? A rushing river that vanishes into a gorge close to where they were camping.
When Kate and Tristan discover that a social worker who flagged concerns about Jean and her daughter was found brutally murdered shortly after Charlie vanished, it makes them question everything they thought they knew about the family..."

This is the fourth book in the Kate Marshall series, though I wasn't aware of it when I read it. The author did a good job of truly making DEVIL'S WAY a standalone book.
When Kate ends up in the hospital, she and her crime-solving partner learn about the disappearance of a three-year-old from the boy's grandmother, who is in the hospital too. She informs Kate that 11-years-ago the boy was at a campsite with family, including herself, but he's not been seen since.
Kate and Tristan are hired to try to locate the child in this procedural mystery.
I was excited by how this story took off, though I did have to question the way that Kate ended up in the hospital. Nevertheless, it had my attention enough to keep the pages turning. Kate and Tristan spent lots of time searching for clues and doing interviews.
Concerns
It didn’t take long to figure out the mystery. Sadly, the story began to feel slow and somewhat repetitive.
Plus, the ending was a bit over-the-top, unbelievable.
Final Thoughts
This wasn’t a book I’d necessarily recommend, but on the other hand, if you’re not too critical about the plot, some of the characters are enjoyable. If you’re in doubt, give it a try and let me know what you think.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ebook and the ability to review this without any stipulations.
It's great to see Kate Marshall back in Devil's Way. I always look forward to Robert Bryndza books.
Whilst doing her normally sea morning swim Kate is caught in a ripe tide but thankfully is recused by a couple of sufferers.
Whilst recovering in hospital Kate comes across Jean in the next bed from her and Jean asks for Kate's help in solving the disappearance of her three year old grandson Charlie.
Charlie vanished without trace eleven years ago while camping with Jean and his parents.
No clues, no evidence.
Can Kate and her business partner Tristan discover what happened to Charlie?
As you would expect from Robert's books there is always some curveballs thrown and some deliciously twists.
The Kid Just Disappeared
Robert Bryndza has created a great character in Private Investigator Kate Marshall. “Devil’s Way” is the fourth installment in the series, the first one I have read. Here she finds herself rushed off to the hospital after nearly drowning. She meets another patient, Jean, who hires her on to investigate the disappearance of her three-year-old grandson eleven years ago. He may have drowned in the river, he may have been abducted, he basically disappeared off the face of the earth. It is considered a cold case, something the police never solved, but the woman just wants closure.
The plot takes a series of twists, of course, and the pages speed by quickly. Kate turns up a number of overlooked leads with the assistance of incredibly cooperative police. Just when things seem too easy and predictable a wonderful device appears– a short story within the story– and the players need to be reevaluated.
So, once again, my TBR list expands even more as I am adding the rest of this series to it.

This is a great series, so I was happy to see a new book continuing Kate Marshall's adventures. Early in the book Kate is caught in a riptide while swimming and is rushed to the hospital. While sharing a room she makes friends with Jean, an elderly patient. Jean tells Kate the story of her three-year-old grandson, Charlie, who disappeared eleven years ago during a camping trip to Dartmoor.
Kate agrees to take the case and try and find out what happened to Charlie. When she and Tristan start their investigation, they find Jean has a dark past that could have contributed to Charlie's disappearance. Kate and Tristan keep investigating with some interesting clues uncovered.
This was an intriguing investigation and I enjoyed following it through to the end. Kate Marshall is an interesting character and this series is a good one to sink your teeth into. I like the interaction between Tristan and Kate. I look forward to the next in the series.
Thanks to Raven Street Publishing through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on January 12, 2023.
@robertbryndza has created two great series that feature smart female main characters that solve crimes with Erika Foster and Kate Marshall. The book, Devil’s Way, is the fourth book in the private investigator Kate Marshall series. With her business partner, Tristan, they work to find a boy who went missing 10 years prior. The investigation has many twists and turns. I really enjoyed this crime thriller and look forward to more PI cases from Kate & Tristan.
Thank you Raven Street Publishing and @netgalley for allowing me to read this book ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.
3.5 rounded up
Kate Marshall #4. She is living on her own and slowly building her detective practice with Tristian. After an accident of her own she takes a case of a long missing child. it’s a solid but not special book. I would have liked a bit more on the what happened piece.
I was given a copy by Netgalley opinions are my own.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gripping book
a near drowning
a cold case
murder
whilst kate is in hospital recovering from a near drowning she hears about a missing toddler that went missing years ago and from that talk decides to take the case on and investigate
as kate and tristan start their investigation into the missing toddler certain things become apparent and when it leads to a murder investigation that has gone cold it only adds more questions
oh my goodness me this book keeps you reading right to the end and what i thought i knew and guessed wasnt it at all...mind blowing
cant wait for the next book in this brilliant series
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read Devil's Way by Robert Bryndza.
This is not the first book which I have read by Robert Bryndza and it definitely won't be the last. I love the way he writes, always gripping page turners and Devil's Way didn't disappoint!!
All throughout this book it kept you guessing, which I loved.
Another strong addition to the Kate Marshall series, however this one was a little lacking in the intensity and heart racing moments. To be honest i had kind of guessed what had happened to the little boy early on so that spoiled it a little for me. That being said, i'm still on the Kate Marshall train and will continue to look forward to reading more!
Thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have to admit I had never read any books by Robert Bryndza. I was completely unfamiliar with him and his books. So I started Devil's Way with no expectations. I just hoped it would be good. I was relieved when i read the first few pages and realized I was really going to enjoy this book! Bryndza has a way of weaving characters and storylines so seamlessly. The different plots seemed to mesh into one good mystery that I became obsessed with trying to solve. If you want a good who-done-it with wonderful characters and fast paced storytelling, read Devil's Way. You won't be sorry!
I voluntarily received a copy of this book from Netgalley.
Devil's Way
by Robert Bryndza
Pub Date: 12 Jan 2023
Devil's Way is the fourth book in a Kate Marshall series but can easily be read as a stand alone book. It is a mystery about a missing child case.
When Kate Marshall, a private investigator is in an accident while swimming, she awakes in the hospital with a roommate who has a case for her. Her 3 year old grandson went missing 11 years ago without a trace while on a camping trip. No body was ever found and the cold case was never closed. Can Kate and her business partner, Tristan figure out where Charlie is?
The question is, was Charlie abducted or swallowed up into the raging waters?
Lots of suspense, realistic characters. I highly recommend this 5 star read.
Many thanks to #NetGalley, #DevilsWay and #RavenStreetPublishing for providing me with an E-ARC of this amazing book. All opinions are my own.
Devil's Way by Robert Bryndza grabbed me and didn't let me go until the final chapter! The book starts with a missing child, then flash-forward 11 years, the child is still missing and Kate Marshal and Tristan Harper, private investigators are contracted with the boy's grandmother to look into the disappearance.
This book is #4 in a series, but reads well as a standalone, if, like me, you haven't read the first three. I liked Devil's Way so much that I will be putting the others (and Mr. Bryndza's Erika Foster series, too) on the top of my TBR. The characters of Kate and Tristan are intriguing, and the mystery itself has numerous twists and layers to keep you guessing. The only critique that I have is that I figured out the resolution at about 2/3 finished, but it was still fun to see how it all came together and how the crime was solved.
Thank you to Netgalley and Ravenstreet Publishing for the digital ARC of Devil's Way. The opinions in this review are my own.
Devil's Way is the fourth book in the Kate Marshall series.
Kate goes for her normal morning swim but gets caught in a riptide. Rescued by two men she is taken to the hospital to recover. When she awakens, she chats with her roommate. Jean shares her story of an unhappy life after her grandson Charlie who was three at the time, was abducted eleven years ago. Jean asks Kate to investigate and find the truth about where Charlie is.
Kate agrees to take on the case with her partner Tristan. As they start to look into the events of the past, they uncover an unsolved murder of a child services worker, a short story of a mother that has accidentally killed her baby while sleeping, and a relationship Jean had with an unsavory character at the time of the disappearance. Is it possible that all these incidents are connected or did Charlie fall into Devil's Way while they had been camping.
This was a riveting story that kept building and getting closer to the truth but all the more bizarre with the many twists and turns hiding it. This was a multi layered story but easy to read and follow.
I received a complimentary ARC of this novel from Netgalley, author Robert Bryndza, and Raven Street Publishing. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read Devil's Way of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am pleased to recommend Robert Bryndza to friends and family. He writes a complex tale with personable characters. And what a good read!
Though this is 4th in a series, it is a complete tale in and of itself. As with most series, the story is richer when read together. Private Investigator Kate Marshall is caught in a rip tide and nearly drowned, rescued by a couple of surfers, and carried unconscious to hospital. Only in L.A., right? But as she recovers, she becomes acquainted with a fellow bedmate in the ICU, Jean. And Jean tells her, upon finding out she's a P.I., the story of the disappearance of her young grandson 11 years ago. Before she is released, Kate is intrigued and agrees to see what she can find out about the disappearance of Jean's grandson, Charles.
And it is a complex tale, with lots of intrigue and hidden clues. Jean has a secret past that could have made 3-year-old Charles a target, and there is the possibility that he wandered from the campsite where the family was tenting, fell into the river, and was trapped in the whirlpool effect of the river emptying into an underground channel, a trap known as Devil's Way. But they also find that a social worker involved with the family at the time was brutally murdered. So was Charles abducted, or pulled down into the underground river? And after all this time, can she and her partner Tristan hope to find the truth?
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
I'm a huge fan of Robert Bryndza and especially this series and this was another humdinger!
Kate and Tristan make such a great team and I love how Tristan's character has developed throughout the last couple of books. Although this is the fourth book in the series it can definitely be read as a stand-alone but it's such a great series I would definitely recommend starting with Nine Elms; the first book.
A 3-year-old boy goes missing from a camping trip with his grandmother, mother, and father. He was left alone in a tent for about 10 minutes and just disappeared into thin air. What happened to him? Did he drown or was he taken?
It is now 11 years later and a chance meeting with Jean, the grandmother, in the hospital leads to Kate and Tristan taking on the case of this missing three-year-old boy. What leads will they be able to find after 11 years that the police couldn't find? How is the murder of a social worker just after the boy disappeared linked to this? Sometimes you need a little bit of luck to be able to get the answers that you looking for.
I found the ending quite emotional and something that makes you think. Are there any winners in a scenario like this?
Thank you to Netgalley and Raven Street Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is 4th in the Kate Marshall series and, in my opinion, this is a great series. This might not be the best one out of the 4 but it is equally as good. You don't have to have read any of the previous books as this works well as a standalone, but if you want my advice, I would read them anyway because they are really very good!
The characters are really strong and I am now quite attached to Kate and Tristan; they make an excellent partnership and I am particularly enjoying their character development as each book comes along. The pace was perfect for me and the story was full of intrigue and although I guessed the twist ... eventually, I really enjoyed how it all played out.
Mr Bryndza is now one of my go-to authors and I highly recommend his books and I must thank Raven Street Publishing and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of Devil's Way.
This is the first book I've read in this series, although it is #4 in the series. I was able to fully enjoy the story without having read the previous books.
Kate is an able private investigator, despite having had a less than ideal past. She and her younger partner, Tristan, complement each other. Together, they work on every lead so that they can to get the full and correct background information on Charlie's disappearance. As they are overturning stones in their search, they come across information that confounds the investigation. They decide to follow those leads as well.
The author introduces just enough information to the reader to keep up with the twists and turns of the story. Well written and very interesting.
A word of caution to readers, that some topics covered in the book might be upsetting, but there are few gory details.
I received a review copy of this book. This is my honest review.
