Interesting premise, great characters, twisty clues and satisfying finish. Robert Bryndza has written an engaging story that touches you long after you are finished reading. I will definitely look for more by him. Thank you to #netgalley and #ravenstreet for this book to read and review, all opinions are my own.
Devil's Way is the forth book of Kate Marshall series.
Kate is in hospital after almost drawning experience. She was saved by some surfers and must spend some time under observation. In the ward, she met older lady, who tells her her lifestory and it seems to have a case for Kate to solve.
This time, Kate is going to investigate a case of missing boy, who went camping with his family and something gone definitely wrong... Years went by and there was no clue what happend to Charlie. Has he fallen into the Devil's Way or has he been abducted? The question is not simple to be answered and Kate is steping into a very dark, secretive chapter of the past...
It is dark. It is full of secrets, full of unimaginable things to be discovered. Isolated places can be dangerous and hid things we would like to be hidden forever, but Kate is determined to finally find out who took or where is Chalie or his body at least.
We have disfunctional families, we have people who cannot find their moral compas and secrets that aren't meant to be unfold...
I imerse myself into this world. This atmosphere is mesmrizing, compelling.
One of the most engaging stories of Kate Marshall so far.
Prior to this great read, I wasn’t aware of the protagonists from previous tales and I'm so glad I got to meet them and that I will get to meet them again.
Those characters are Kate and Tristan who have a Private Investigation business.
If you like dark TV dramas set in grim landscapes, this book is for you – and with a main character that has a history (not sure if it was covered in the previous book). Her therapy, if you like, is cold water sea swimming and that’s where it all begins.
She has a mishap, ends up in hospital and another woman in there ends up hiring her to get to the bottom of what happened to her grandchild many years earlier.
As in films and TV, I love in books when you have a sense of landscape and geography and the author does this so well. The story unfurls beautifully and I found myself unable to put this down – and when life stopped me reading, I genuinely couldn’t stop wondering what had happened all those years ago on Dartmoor on that camping trip.
Flawed characters. British landscapes. Flashbacks and mysteries unearthed to be solved. It really is a great read. I highly recommend Devil’s Way and I WILL be checking out other books by the author.
Five stars.
Part of a series featuring Kate and Tristan, private investigators. An old mystery to solve, lots of action and plenty of twists. A good read.
This is an amazing thriller, which I loved. I have read quite a few of Robert's books now, and I have loved them all.
The story is about Kate and her assistant Tristan who set out to find a little boy called Charlie, who went missing near Devil's Way. His gran Jean shared a hospital room with Kate after Kate had a sea accident, and she asked her for help finding him.
This whole book reeled me in, and kept me reading. It was just so fantastic and I highly recommend this book, and all of the other books in the series! They are all terrific.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
Devil's Way is the 4th book in the Kate Marshall series. Although I have only read the first in the series, I easily enjoyed this one and had no problems following the story. The premise behind the case Kate is working on is a parent's nightmare, a young child disappearing on a family camping trip. Kate has a swimming mishap and is in the hospital, sharing a room with Jean, a grandmother whose three-year-old grandson disappeared eleven years ago on a family camping trip. Jean was supposed to be watching him. His body was never found. Jean hires Kate and Tristan to find out what happened to Charlie. They take the case, although they aren't sure what they will find so many years later.
Kate is a Private Investigator, a job she took on after her last, case as a police detective that was horrendous and almost cost her life. Being an ex-detective, she has excellent skills of deduction, observation, listening, interviewing/questioning, researching and putting all those pieces together. Tristan is a great partner, keeping her reined in, prodding her to put the pieces together and is a great sounding board. I love how well they work together. Because she is not at 100%, Tristan does a lot of the leg work in this one and it was nice to see his skills as well. This was an interesting mystery, with lots of clues along the way. It was more of a suspenseful mystery than a thriller that I was expecting, but it was still a great story. I had my ideas along the way and boy was I wrong, every time. Cold cases are always interesting to me, especially as they were able to find evidence from that long ago. The secondary characters were a bit shady with alcoholism, murder and plagiarism in the past, but how Kate and Tristan used that information to solve the case was so intriguing. This was a well written story that I recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley, Robert Bryndza and Raven Street Publishing for the free e-book in exchange for honest review.
I love Kate Marshall and every time there is a new book with her I worry it won’t be as good. But this one moves quickly and keeps you guessing right up to the end! I really enjoyed seeing more Ade in this one and of course Tristen!
I loved this book so much although i had an inkling he was with the farming family, I just couldn't work out how or why. The murder of the social worker was brutal and I thought the crazy cruise lady did it so that was a shock! The were shocks and surprises all the way through I loved it!
Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read and review this book.
This is a great series and I really enjoy any book by Robert Bryndza but this one was a little different for me.
We start out with Kate who is an avid ocean swimmer getting caught in a riptide and almost drowning. Fortunately two surfers rescue her and she ends up in the hospital. While sharing a room with an elderly woman who has a story to tell when she finds out that Kate is a private investigator. Fourteen years ago her grandson Charlie went missing and she wants to know what happened to him.
Kate and Tristan take on the case and work to find out what happened to the little boy.
I had a little trouble staying interested in the story as the most exciting thing that happened was when Kate almost drowned. Usually I find this series really interesting and this time it just fell somewhat flat. I wanted to find out who took the little boy and I figured it out when I was a little over half done with the book. I finished because I generally like this author and maybe this was just one in the series that was not as good as the others. For me it was a tad boring and predictable.
I will continue to read this author because most of the time he hits it out of the park for me!
I really enjoy the Kate Marshall series in general and Devil's Way was no different. It's a fast paced thriller, with a clear and simplistic writing style. The dynamic between Kate and Tristan is quite interesting, and in this one they navigate their differences a bit more, which was compelling. Poor Kate really doesn't get an easy time!
I enjoyed the plot, it was a little bit different so it's nice to see the series take on different cases and step away more from Kate's past. The descriptions of Devil's Tor were great and very transportive.
No real surprises, but if you're looking for a cosy, easy read and a series you can invest in, then this is the one!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
I've really enjoyed many of Robert Bryndza's past novels. They are tight, twisty-turny mysteries with lead female characters that are complex and enjoyable to read.
In this book, Kate Marshall is approached in her capacity as a private detective to investigate what happened to a young boy who disappeared from a campsite several years before. He was so little, and thought to have been washed away in a river.
As usual, this book is engaging and I zipped through, keen to discover what happened. However, I did think it wasn't quite as well written. Some scenes were broken by chapter breaks which made reading quite jarring and felt unnecessary. This bothered me quite a bit!
But overall, this was a good mystery and if you are after an interesting read with a satisfying conclusion, hop to it!
I will start by saying that I have not read any of the other books in the series, but I may have to start! I am a fan of the author's writing style and the character development. This book definitely had me on the edge of my seat.
This has been on my to read shelf since it's release-what took me so long? I couldn't put this suspenseful thriller full of twists and turns. While recuperating in the hospital after a near fatal drowning PI Kate Marshall a fellow patient, Jean, shares a horrific story about her Grandson, Charlie. Kate and her partner Tristan slowly unravel the past discovering what really happened to young Charlie. In addition to the riveting plot, the setting created an extra layer of intrigue. This is the first book of the series I have read and I absolutely love Kate-flaws and all! I found a new series to read and highly recommend this to fans of crime thrillers.. . Thank you to Raven Street Publishing and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Firstly, thank you to Net Galley, The publishers, and of course the author for an ARC copy for my review.
With my apologies for the delay, retirement is very busy.
THE TRUTH HIDES IN THE DARK
Kate Marshall’s investigation into a young boy’s disappearance sends her down an unexpectedly twisted path in a riveting thriller by multi-million bestselling author, Robert Bryndza.
When Private Investigator Kate Marshall is rushed to hospital after being pulled into a riptide current in the sea, the near-death experience leaves her shaken. During her recovery, she befriends Jean, an elderly lady on the same ward. Jean tells the harrowing story of how her three-year-old grandson, Charlie, went missing eleven years ago during a camping trip on Dartmoor.
By the time Kate is well enough to go home, she's agreed to take on the case, but when Kate and her trusty sidekick Tristan start to look at the events of that fateful night, they discover that Jean has a dark past that could have put Charlie in jeopardy.
Was Charlie abducted? Or did he fall into Devil's Way? A rushing river that vanishes into a gorge close to where they were camping.
When Kate and Tristan discover that a social worker who flagged concerns about Jean and her daughter was found brutally murdered shortly after Charlie vanished, it makes them question everything they thought they knew about the family...
Filled with twists and turns, yes especially the last third of the book, although rather slow in the middle, where the pace of the book did get a little hard, my first time with this happening with this author's work. Devil's Way is the fourth Kate Marshall novel.
Four stars, due the strength of the last part of the book, and the great main characters.
The fourth book in Robert Bryndza's series featuring private investigator Kate Marshall and her associate Tristan, Devil's Way might just be the best yet!
After suffering a near-death experience when caught in a rip current during her morning sea-swim, Kate is drawn into the case of a child who went missing on Dartmoor eleven years previously. Kate and Tristan's investigations quickly lead them to the unsolved murder of the same child's social worker, only days after three-year-old Charlie went missing. Surely the two events occurring in such proximity can't be a coincidence? In a well-paced and intriguing story, Kate and Tristan pursue many tantalising clues, unearth new suspects and make a startling discovery on the moor. A somewhat bittersweet ending pulls all the threads together for a satisfying conclusion.
The investigation into three-year-old Charlie's disappearance raises some personal spectres for Kate, given that she lost custody of her own child at a similar age. Tristan takes on more sole responsibility in this instalment, given Kate's need to convalesce from her near-drowning. The English south-west coast and moorland settings are evocative and well-used by Robert Bryndza to enhance the drama of the plot. The supporting cast, including a couple of returning characters, are well-developed and intriguing and Bryndza weaves plenty of suspicious behaviour and misdirection into the story, keeping us guessing until near the end.
I'd enthusiastically recommend Devil's Way to any reader who enjoys twisty and atmospheric mysteries - it's a compelling read.
My thanks to the author, Robert Bryndza, publisher Raven Street Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title.
Devil’s Way is a harrowing account of a cold case involving a three year old who went missing in the middle of the night from a remote camping area with dangerous waters nearby. It was long thought Charlie drowned but his body was never found. Charlie’s grandmother Jean decides to hire private investigators to look into the eleven year old cold case and from there a dark and sinister tail emerges.
What happened to Charlie? Can they find closer for Jean. Are sone secrets orthodoxy killing to keep. Is Jean who has a dark and sorted past more involved then she admits? So many things to uncover and in the end Will they ever know Charlie’s truth?
Excellent read really enjoyed it. It kind of just Ramos down at the end and it heaved a few loose ends. But overall it was a great story and I do recommend it!
Devil's Way is book #4 in the Kate Marshall series. This time Kate, a Private Investigator, and her assistant, Tristan, are investigating a cold case involving the disappearance of little Charlie. Charlie was only 3 years old when he vanished during a camping trip to Dartmoor, with his family. Many years later his grandmother wants the case reopened by Kate and hopes to get some closure. I have enjoyed every book of Robert Bryndza's so far and Devil's Way is no exception. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.
Kate Marshall is a former policewoman and professor, who becomes a private detective. With her partner, Tristan, she's gaining a degree of notoriety. But that can't prevent her from being caught and almost drowned by a riptide. In the hospital, she encounters a woman named Jean, who has a story. Her grandson, Charlie, disappeared while on a camping trip, years ago. Kate takes the case.
But the case proves to have lots of twists and turns. Enlisting some of the policemen who did the original investigation, Kate and Tristan begin to peal back the layers of the onions.
The author is an excellent writer. It's a cliche that "it's a book that you can't put down". But this one fit the bill. The plot twists and turns and, ultimately, has a surprise for an ending. The characters are well developed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look for more in the series.
I needed a book that I didn’t need to think about getting into knowing the characters and this was that.
This book had a few twists and turns but was more one in which you could dive straight into
As usual in my reviews, I will not rehash the plot - you can find reviews like that out there already if that's what you're looking for... Instead, I recommend that you read this novel for yourself.
I've previously read and enjoyed several of the "Erika Foster" novels by Robert Bryndza, so was pleased to receive an ARC of this book, even though I hadn't read any of the earlier "Kate Marshall" novels. That did not matter - this book works just fine as a standalone as enough background information is given to bring the reader up to speed.
This was an enjoyable read that I found hard to put down. The plot is well thought out, and the writing style suits this genre perfectly. There is peril aplenty from the very beginning! I liked the main characters Kate and Tristan, and there's a good cast of supporting characters too.
I did start to guess the crux of the mystery part way through the book (and was pleased to be proved right!) but that just made me want to read on to the end.
Looking forward to reading more by this talented author.
Recommended for fans of twisty-turny mysteries.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC. All opinions my own.
