I’ve read all of the Kate Marshall stories to date and all are interesting books! The author is well written. In fact, there are almost too many descriptions of the landscapes. I enjoyed reading this cold case of a 3 year old that was reported missing many years ago. The characters are all intertwined until the big reveal at the end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Devil’s Way” by Robert Bryndza, new author to this reader is a riveting and fantastic read. I had a hard time putting this one down once I started. I am hating myself of not having the opportunity to read the other three books in this series, which I am sure are just as good.
The story begins with a child going missing and then to Kate Marshall, a private investigator and ex-detective. While on a daily swim she is dragged into a riptide that lands her in the hospital. As she recovers, she entertains a conversation with another patient named Jean who tells her of how her grandson, Charlie while on a camping trip went missing. It has been approximately 13 years since his disappearance that left no trace of clues or evidence.
Kate tells Tristan, her partner of the meeting and they both take on the case to uncover the mystery of the case. There is twists and turns, speculations of the grandmother and her daughter and what happened to the social worker who had reservations of that family.
This was oh so good and well written. The plot and transition from chapter to chapter left me guessing every minute. Thoroughly enjoyed and will backtrack to the others in this series. Recommend the read.
Kate Marshall series #4 but I am a first time reader of Robert Bryndza.
This outing with PI’s Kate and Tristan involves a 3 year old boy missing since 2007… 11 years ago.
The characters are well drawn and the author had me hooked from the outset.
I constantly changed my mind with all the twists and turns as to who was involved and what exactly happened to the boy:.
The setting plays a big part in the story of the disappearance and the description of the Dartmoor Reserve was beautifully rendered.
The ending was satisfying and ultimately believable.
My only criticism would be the authors overwhelming usage of coincidences that had to occur to make the outcome possible..
A solid outing though.
Another great book from Mr B... a twisted tale that has to be unravelled with diligence and bumps along the way. This series is one to savour, and I like the main characters, they are not perfect, but who is, and that makes it all the more realistic.
In “Devils Way” (Kate Marshall #4) by Robert Bryndza we see Kate and Tristian take on the case of a missing child, Charlie. As they weave their way through all the information that they uncover it seems like there is much more to the story than expected. As the pieces start to fall in place, Kate realizes that while one family involved might be getting the closer they have been looking for the last eleven years she might be tearing another one apart.
Can’t wait for more Kate and Tristian adventures.
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
Another brilliant mystery from Robert Bryndza! Kate Marshall swims in the sea every day but one morning she gets caught up in a riptide and ends up in hospital after being rescued by a couple of surfers. While she is there, she meets a woman who asks her to look into the disappearance of her grandson 11 years earlier. The 3 year old had gone missing from their tent while they were camping in a remote spot on Dartmoor and no trace of him had ever been found.
Kate is intrigued by the mystery and she and her assistant Tristan set about recreating the events of that Summer evening. I love the character of Kate and her flawed history which makes her seem so real. As always with a Robert Bryndza novel, the setting is as important as a character. The remote campsite where the child disappeared is described vividly and as people’s memories emerge, it becomes more and more real.
I loved the mystery and the way that it was gradually revealed. At one point, I was convinced that I had solved it only to be proved completely wrong.
If you haven’t read any of this author’s books before, then I suggest that you do so as he is one of the best crime/mystery writers around at the moment.
Thank you so much to Net Galley and Raven Street Publishing for allowing me to read this ARC.
Another great addition to the Kate Marshall series. This time Kate and Tristan are hired to find out what happened to a three-year-old boy who disappeared from a campsite more than 10 years ago. While he has been assumed dead, his grandmother wants closure and Kate and Tristan are soon caught in a twisted, complicated story.
Thanks to Netgalley and Raven Street Publishing for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Kate Marshall is back with her partner Tristan. This time they are investigating a 3 year old boy who went missing at a campsite 10 years ago. His grandmother had him declared dead but now feels that was an error and needs real closure on the disappearance.
This is a great series, as is the Erika Foster series. Every book is dependably good. I like the characters and the mysteries. I particularly liked this one because we didn't know who was guilty and what had happened until the end vs. the cat and mouse plot. This author is on my must read list and I look forward to his next book.
Stunning cliffs and a raging sea, secluded moors and an ancient stone structure, and close by an old farm with some buried secrets. When private detective Kate is asked to investigate the disappearance of a little boy, which happened 15 years ago, the scene of gloom and doom is very well set. A absolutely loved the character of Kate and of her sidekick Tristan and the intricate relationship that they have. The fact that they are PI's takes away the police office politics, which I don't like in procedurals, so kudos for that.
The other main characters which were involved in this story were all well drafted and the story itself was engaging and intriguing. Even the "Hyacinth Bucket" character was well depicted - I see what you did there Robert!
The writing style is so fluid and captivating that I had the feeling I was reading for 5 minutes but already a quarter of the book had passed. Although this is the 4th book in the series it was a first for me, and I can confirm that it can easily be read as a stand-alone, at no point did I feel as if I lacked info to progress with the story. The good news for me is that I can now read the 3 first !
A heartfelt thank you to NetGalley, Raven Street Publishing and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A great story that kept me gripped from the start! Kate and Tristan are asked to investigate a cold case, with the tragic story of a young boy who went missing eleven years earlier.
The setting of Dartmoor adds tension and mystery to the story, and there are a few unexpected twists along the way.
It works perfectly as a standalone, and is perfect for anyone who loves suspense and thrillers. Highly recommend!
I raced through this book, loving the action and the moody setting of Dartmoor. I enjoyed meeting private detective Kate Marshall and her partner, Tristan Harper, again. In some ways they are an odd partnership, but they complement each other and make a formidable team. This is the fourth Kate Marshall novel, but reads absolutely fine as a standalone.
In Devil’s Way they investigate the case of three-year-old Charlie who disappeared while camping with his family eleven years ago, never to reappear. Did he fall into the raging river? Or wander into the bog? Or was he kidnapped?
A host of well-rounded characters people this story, most memorable of which is Jean, Charlie’s grandmother. She adored her grandson and feels responsible. Jean, however, has a murky past, a dodgy on-off boyfriend, and a strange relationship with her daughter. In addition, red flags had been raised by a social worker.
There’s murder, suspense and twists aplenty. Even though I guessed the outcome and suspect many readers will, this was a great read in true Bryndza style – fast-paced, easy-to-read and very gripping.
I love Bryndza’s Erika Foster and Kate Marshall books. This is my favorite from the Marshall series so far. A young boy has been missing for 11 years and Kate and Tristan are hired to find out what really happened.
After finishing this, the fourth in the series featuring private investigator Kate Marshall and her partner, Tristan Harper, I remain the fan who has enjoyed all the other books (as well as all the other books by this talented author, also a favorite). This time, the plot centers around a young boy who went missing 11 years ago.
Kate learned about the boy while she was hospitalized following an early-morning swimming accident; her roommate is an elderly woman named Jean, and the missing boy was her grandson Charlie. The pair, plus Jean's daughter and partner, were tent camping in a remote area known as Devil's Way; her daughter Becky, Jean says, blamed her for leaving the boy alone in their tent, if only for a short time.
Visits to the boggy area from which the boy disappeared don't reveal much, but more digging reveals that a social worker who apparently didn't think much of Becky's parenting or Jean's grandparenting was murdered not long after Charlie disappeared. That brings a major shift in the investigation, which in turn takes readers on twists and turns that lead to a not-too-surprising, but exciting end. At least that's the way it was for me, and I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy. Well done!
Not only is this not the usual genre I pick to read but I’m silly enough that I didn’t realise that it was actually part of a series! Much to my satisfaction, the blurb doesn’t lie plus book reads just fine as a stand alone and is most certainly good enough to make me want to explore this authors other novels - which is quite high praise from someone who doesn’t usually click too well with crime thrillers.
The book is about a private detective, Kate, and her work partner named Tristan. She has a near death experience with a riptide while out swimming and finds herself in hospital next to another patient called Jean whose grandchild went missing a few years ago but was never found and presumed dead. Jean overheard a doctor mentioning that Kate was a private detective and quickly hired her to look more in her grandsons case. What Kate and Tristan find leads to loops of both tragedy and hope.
There are quite a few characters in the book so I imagine it’s hard to characterise them all but the author has done a good job, especially when it comes to making me more interested in Kate as a person. She’s brilliant but flawed, perhaps deeply so, and I want to find out more about her backstory.
Despite the fairly predictable ending, I still found myself up at all hours of the night reading this book so naturally I’d recommend it, especially for people into this genre. It’s an interesting fast paced and easy read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
The suspense is high and Kate and Tristan have their hands full. This one kept me guessing right up to the end! Kate is an interesting character and so complex. The way the case was worked and came together was engrossing. I was completely sucked into the story and read it in one sitting.
I always look forward to the next book in the series. I’ve grown attached to these characters and can’t get enough.
I enjoyed this story about a couple of private detectives solving a particularly difficult cold case. The plot is well developed with just the right amount of red herrings. I liked the characters and how the detectives worked so successively together, bouncing ideas off each other and consulting the police immediately when necessary.
I must admit, I did guess the outcome but nevertheless I enjoyed getting there.
My thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and the author for an advanced copy of this book to read and review.
This is the first Robert Bryndza book I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Believable characters and a cracking plot make this a pleasure to read. Kate and Tristan and their detective agency lead you through myriad twist and turns to a satisfying ending. I will definitely be catching up with the first books in the series.
This book is a slow burn. Charlie goes missing from a family camping vacation when he is three years old. Now eleven years later Jean has hired private investigators to find out what happened that night. I thought it was obvious where Charlie was so that wasn't much of a shock.
I liked Kate and Tristan as a team. This book works as a stand alone since I haven't read any of the other books in the series. Kate has a way of finding a needle in a haystack and love how tenacious she is.
I loved hearing all the slang words in here being American and that always makes me smile.
I would like to read more in this series.
Kate Marshall & her partner Tristan have quite the mystery on their hands. Find a 3 year old boy who disappeared 11 years ago and has already been declared dead.
Amazing read and the ending is outstanding!
Thank you Robert Bryndza for a terrific read, and thank you #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review #DevilsWay.
