This has to be one of my favorite Robert Bryndza novels. It is simply brilliant.
Ex-cop, now a private investigator, Kate Marshall is in the hospital recovering from a near drowning in the sea. Her roommate is a woman named Jean who tells Kate about the disappearance of her grandson eleven years earlier while camping at Devil’s Way.
She asks Kate to look into the disappearance.
This leads Kate and her partner Tristan on a twisty trail. They must interview Jean again as Kate doesn’t think that Jean has told her everything. They meet with Jean’s attorney and his mother who is a close friend of Jean’s. They learn that Charlie’s (the lost child), mother and Jean’s daughter committed suicide. Charlie’s father has remarried and has two daughters. They learn that the family was under investigation by the social services. Jean really didn’t like the social services woman. And there is murder.
The ending was not surprising for me, but it was a lot of fun getting there.
This is a great story, extremely well written and plotted. Mr. Bryndza is a wonderful writer who makes his characters come alive. Even the minor characters in the book were very lifelike. I really enjoyed this book. While I have not read all of this author’s books, I have read a great many and I believe that this is one of his best.
I want to thank NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for forwarding to me a copy of this excellent book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.
Firstly I would like to thank netgalley, and Raven street publishers, and the brilliant author Robert bryndza for an early copy of this book to read..
I recently read book one in this series, not read book two and three yet but downloaded on my kindle, This is book four in this series..And another fantastic read..This book starts with Kate Marshall and her assistant Tristan on another case,Kate goes for morning swim gets into trouble ends up I'm hospital where she means Jean, where she tells her story of her missing 3 years old grandson Charlie goes missing on a campsite..will Kate find out what happened to him eleven years ago? I guessed the ending to this book one of my favourite authors.highly recommend this series and his books...A first class read.
This book will be reviewed on goodreads, Amazon UK,waterstone's.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book by Robert Bryndza and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery. A young boy of three, Charlie, goes missing from a camping site and private detectives Kate Marshall and Tristan are employed by Jean to investigate the disappearance of her grandson.
‘Devil’s Way’ is the fourth book in the excellent Kate Marshall series by author Robert Bryndza.
I am yet to read a book by this author that I didn’t enjoy whether it be the comedy series he wrote in the early days or the riveting thrillers he concentrates on now. The Kate Marshall series is well written with good plots and interesting characters. This latest addition to the series carries on in the same way maintaining the high standard Robert has set.
The series features Private Investigator Kate Marshall and her partner Tristan. In the latest offering Kate is rushed to hospital following an accident in the sea when she was pulled into a riptide current. Obviously shaken following her near fatal experience she finds herself in hospital to recover and makes an acquaintance with an elderly woman named Jean. Jean tells Kate an heart-breaking story of how her three-year-old grandson, Charlie, went missing eleven years ago during a camping trip on Dartmoor. When Kate is well enough to leave hospital she agrees to take on the case with Tristan’s help, but they soon discover that Jean has a dark past that could have put Charlie in jeopardy.
The question they face is was Charlie abducted or did he fall into the fast river where they were camping known as Devil’s Way. Kate and Tristan discover that a social worker who had concerns about Jean and her daughter was found brutally murdered shortly after Charlie vanished. All of a sudden they start doubt everything they already surmised and realise they need to look again at the family.
This is a great read, I thought I had it worked out but then everything changed.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Raven Street publishing for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great addition to the series and Kate and Tristan did it again and wow what this women goes through in her life she is a warrior, loved this book and the storyline was juicy and amazing
Private Investigator and ex-detective Kate Marshall has finally got her life pretty much worked out. In her darkest hours she could never have imagined running her own business, no longer drinking, or having a healthy relationship with son Jake, who at one time seemed been lost to her forever. Living on the coast Kate has also taken up wildwater swimming, but after a terrifying experience lands her in hospital, she finds her next case impossible to refuse.
Charlie Julings would be a teenager now if he hadn't disappeared one night eleven years ago. As soon as she learns what Kate does his grandma, Jean, begs her to look for her grandson. Once discharged Kate and Tristan, her only work colleague, begin looking at what could have happened to the little boy, but how do they search for someone who disappeared without trace, leaving no clues, sightings, or remains?
This is the fourth in a series which improves with each new book and I absolutely loved it. From Kate’s terrifying experience, through Tristan's ever increasing confidence, to an ending which ticked all the boxes, this was brilliant from the start. The storyline was fast moving, with a cast of characters who were realistically and sympathetically drawn and drew me in and kept me captivated throughout.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I loved this, it is a definite highlight of my reading year and easy to recommend.
Rounding up to 3 stars
I might be the lone voice in not loving this.
Having finished it, I think the plot itself was good. Enough twists and turns to keep you entertained, and guessing the whole way through.
I sometimes feel the actions of the character unbelievable. Actually far too often.
I enjoy Bryndza's writing enough to have read most of his books but maybe this series isn't for me.
When Private Investigator Kate Marshall is rushed to hospital after being pulled into a riptide current in the sea, the near-death experience leaves her shaken. During her recovery, she befriends Jean, an elderly lady on the same ward. Jean tells the harrowing story of how her three-year-old grandson, Charlie, went missing eleven years ago during a camping trip on Dartmoor.
Jean asks Kate to look into the disappearance of Charlie but as Kate and her partner Tristan look further into what happened, there is a major possibility that Jean has not been totally forthcoming with all the facts. This was another great book from Robert Bryndza and once again one that I made short work of as I couldn't put it down. A great story that draws you in from the beginning, realistic characters that enhance the plot and pace of the book. I am really enjoying watching the development of Kate's character in particular as the series progresses, can't wait for the next book. Highly recommended.
Thankyou to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest unbiased review.
Such a great addition to the Kate Marshall series. Love how Kate was vulnerable in this one, a little unsure of herself. Great story even though I had it figured out early on.
Definitely recommend this series.
Thank you #netgalley and #ravenstreetpublishing for the eARC.
Thank you NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for the copy of Devil’s Way. I love the Kate Marshall series and this was no exception. It can be read as a standalone, but I loved seeing how Kate and Tristan’s partnership has evolved and how Kate has grown and changed. A chance encounter with Jean in the hospital leads them to investigate a missing person case from 11 years ago. What follows is a whirlwind of clues that don’t add up and it takes smarts, hard work, and luck for Kate and Tristan to start to put it all together. This was a great story that you will love!
Another instalment of Kate Marshall PD that didn’t disappoint. Kate stumbles across her next case when she finds herself in an unfortunate situation. Her and Justin begin investigating and as you can imagine there are the usual and also the unexpected twists and turns throughout the case.
Robert Bryndza writing really brings you into the characters so much so you find yourself knowing them inside and out. There’s such a depth to them that having followed Kate from the start you are willing her to succeed. That said you could equally pick this title up and read it not having know the characters as their back story is told along the reading journey enough for you to not be lost about the character had you read it as a stand-alone.
Excellent storyline, excellently written by an excellent author… next please !
Another investigation for Kate and Tristan. This series just goes from strength to strength, I love their friendship and work ethics.
In this enthralling read, Kate and Tristan take on the cold case of a missing 3 year old. Hired by his Grandmother Jean, Charlie went missing 11 years previously whilst on a camping trip.
From the beginning of the case we're taken on a rollercoaster of a ride as they try to discover what happened to Charlie on that fateful night. Another great book by Robert Bryndza
Devil’s Way by Robert Bryndza is the fourth in the Kate Marshall Crime Thriller series. This book is set in Dartmoor and Exmoor and sets the tone for a dark and chilling scene fitting for the reported death of a three year old boy.. The boy was camping with his parents and grandmother and the boy left the tent at some point and was never seen again. Kate and Tristan have been asked to look into the disappearance of Charlie and find out for sure that he is dead..
They uncover death and kidnapping and lies and deceit, there re many twists and turns before the climax of the novel I enjoyed reading this latest Kate Marshall book and look forward to reading many more of the authors books.
Highly recommended
Good book! Wow! What an interesting story! This book had an edge of suspense, action, intrigue, mystery, murder, and great police work and a great who done it! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I will definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
This is my second book by Robert Bryndza in the Kate Marshall series which is fast becoming one of my favourites.
In this book, Kate gets into trouble when she hits a riptide on her daily swim and is hospitalised. Whilst in hospital she strikes up a conversation with another patient who tells Kate that her grandson went missing 13 years ago (as a three year old) when they were camping.
Kate and her partner Tristan take on the case and try to uncover what happened all those years ago...
What I love about Bryndza's writing and stories is their simplicity. This may be a criticism for others however I dislike books which are just unrealistic twist after unrealistic twist forcing the reader to suspend disbelief whilst reading. The author here tells an excellent story in a linear timeline, building upon the characters and storyline.
Thanks to Netgalley and Raven Street Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Oh my word what a fantastic read. I couldn’t put it down. Another story about Kate and Tristan and their Private Investigation business. They get hired by Jean whose grandson disappeared years ago on a camping trip on Dartmoor. She’s convinced he’s still alive even though she had him declared dead. There are so many twists and turns. I love the short story part. Kate gets into trouble when she’s out on her morning swim. I don’t want to give anything away. I’m sorry I’ve read it so quickly as I really want to read more but all good things must come to an end. I can’t wait for the next one
Wow what a book, Kate Marshall is back with a bang! After reading the first three I could not wait to get stuck into the fourth.
After almost drowning in a rip tide, Kate meets a lady while recovering in hospital who wants her to find out what happened to her granson Charlie, who went missing when he was three years old.
With lots of twists and turns along the way, Kate and Tristan solve a murder and find out what happened to Charlie.
I raced through this book, finishing it in a day
Thanks to netgalley for my arc in exchange for an honest review

Well where do I start, another brilliant read by Robert, dragged me in at the beginning and kept me hooked until the very last page, a great storyline, great charecters, absolutely loved it
I’d like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I have been a huge fan of this author since I found his Erika Foster books. This time we follow Kate Marshall and her partner, Tristan after she suffers an accident and winds up in hospital. There she meets Jean, a woman who’s grandson disappeared on a camping trip over a decade and has never been found. We follow Kate and Tristan while they try to find out if Charlie is still alive and why is everyone so secretive about where they were at the time. Another interesting read I couldn’t put down.
Robert Bryndza and his wonderful creations, Kate and Tristan, have done it again - delivered a clever mystery with plenty of twists and details. The characters are, as always, completely credible and the careful handling of the interactions at the end of the novel are really well done. Robert Bryndza has created a compelling world here and each book in this series just adds to his well earned reputation as one of today’s foremost crime writers. Taking his place next to the likes to Robotham and Billingham, Robert Bryndza never fails to deliver.
