Although I liked the premise of this book, I struggled with the execution. The IVF issue felt like it was glossed over a bit too much, which made me uncomfortable. The plot dragged in places too, with nothing really happening to move anything forward.
Overall, not really a book for me.
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Tara and Colin love at first sight have been together since he walked into her bar and ordered a pint of Guinness. Now all those years later is their relationship crumbling, 3 failed attempts of ivf . Both of them download an app called fling and get a 100% match first time. An enjoyable and funny read.
Loved it! Great characters, both with the just right amount of flaws to make them feel real. The love felt between the 2 main characters feels so genuine and easy, but you can easily see how the strain of IVF has led them to drift apart. I enjoyed the contrasting chapter POVs and how you might see different sides to a story. Happy with the way the story unfolded and love reading the exchanges between Tara and Colin both when they knew they were talking to each and when they didn’t. Thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Into the world of online dating and how fun it can be at times, especially for the reader. I really liked this fun story, such a change from the thrillers I have been reading. Who would have guessed you would match 100% with your husband and not realise, even almost bumping into each other on the way to your date? Funny and enjoyable reading which I loved.
A romantic comedy about a married couple who decide to have anonymous affairs via a new dating app, Fling appeared to be full of promise but I just couldn't get into it. I found the main couple to be irritating, which worsened as the novel progressed. The premise is great - anonymous tinder! For cheating! - but other elements of the novel made no sense to me. Why do Tara and Colin insist on talking about sex in work? Especially Tara chatting to her intern which feels.totally inappropriate. It's a bit odd and took me out of the story.
On a sadder note - the instigator of the couple losing their 'spark' is Tara refusing to continue IVF treatment which is a huge, nuanced and complex issue thats just treated like a useful plot device here? Which annoyed me. Tara shuts down and refuses to discuss it and I found this so frustrating.
Finally I didn't love the writing style, though there were plenty of good jokes in there, to give the author credit where it's due.
Sadly a miss for me. DNF @ 25%
The whole idea of this book is brilliant, and I liked how it focused on a well established relationship and how after going through a tough time with IVF things can be difficult for a marriage.
However I will admit that whilst I enjoyed the beginning of this book I found that it did go in circles at points and I just wanted the characters to talk to each other, but I guess they didn’t and that more than likely would happen in a long standing relationship.
Would still love to read more about Rory and Emily though! I feel like that could be a fun spin off.
This had a interesting premise and I did enjoy it,,however, I kept hoping the main characters would just talk to each other rather than spend time on an app. Thank you to the publisher for this ARC via NetGalley.
Fling by Joseph Murray was a decent read. The premise of the book was interesting - Tara and Colin's relationship seemed like it had a lot of potential at first, but as the years went on, they struggled to keep the spark alive. The idea of them finding their 100% match on a new dating app (that encouraged cheating) was intriguing, and I was curious to see how things would play out.
However, I did feel like the book dragged on a bit in places and some of the plot points were a little predictable. Additionally, I wasn't always fully invested in the characters and their relationships, which made it hard for me to fully engage with the story. The writing was competent but not particularly memorable, and the plot felt a bit predictable at times.
Overall, "Fling" was an okay read, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me.
Fling was a fun, easy to read book! I tend to read thrillers, so it was a nice change of pace.
It’s about a married couple going through some hard times and an app called Fling that helps married people find a “fling” to spice up their life.
I thought it was cute and fun. There were some good laughs. I enjoyed the read.
Thank you
Tara and Colin have been together for some time. It was love at first sight, but the spark has gone. Indecently, they're drawn to a new app designed for committed couples looking for discrete hookups and affairs.
Fling is a mixed bag. The premise is brilliant, and parts of the book are exceptionally well-written and funny. But I never felt drawn in and couldn't invest in either of the characters. I think that was more on me than the book and I do believe many will enjoy this book.
I was hesitant to give this 3 stars as I originally wanted to give it 2.5. I liked the originality of the idea and the plot was funny (and did have me laughing out loud and some parts), the banter and bickering between Tara and Colin was actually very funny. I liked the mirroring between their two sides; the same quirky loyal best friend and their underlying love for one another, as well as many other small things. it was a fun read but not one I would read again.
for me, the plot was a little stretched, it did feel like things were going in circles at some points which made me hesitant to continue. nonetheless, the overall story was good and I did enjoy it! tara and colin were great characters and I enjoyed their individual povs too…
thank you netgalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the characters and the plot of the story, I will definitely be reading more from this author.
I really enjoyed this book. After 3 failed IVF attempts, Tara decides she can't go through with it again. Her husband Colin wants to keep going. Their relationship starts to deteriorate. Then a new App appears and becomes a really big thing. It's called Fling and aims to match people who want an affair with no strings attached. For different reasons both Tara and Colin sign up and both get a 100% match. But should they pursue it? This story is really funny and poignant and I really loved the main characters. I recommend this as a great, entertaining read! Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
Unfortunately I didn’t get on with this one at all. I think from the premise the reader will have a good idea about where the story is going to go, which makes the journey - enjoying the characters, feeling invested in their relationship - all the more important.
This one really didn’t hit. I didn’t find the characters believable (Tara) or likeable (Colin). It was hard to get invested for this reason. The story tended to favour stereotypes and tropes without any subversion or twist on the expected, and the running joke about Tara being a feminist was very retro.
A fun premise overall, but not for me.
Really cute idea that was well executed, making it a fun, easy read. Tara and Colin were once the perfect couple, meeting in a way that Tara feels can only be explained by destiny. But now, the sheen has dulled and while they still love each other, they get on each others nerves continually. Two random events finds them both testing a new dating app for married couples seeking a fling, without the other knowing. And low and behold, they are a perfect match. And so the fun begins, will they get to meet their new match, and can their marriage survive in the interim?
Enjoyed the playful poking fun at dating apps and modern dating, as well as the deeper age old question of fate and destiny. Tara and Colin are believable characters, and the verbal sparring and dialogue was very relatable and well written. Overall, an enjoyable and lighthearted romcom.
The premise of this sounded fantastic and I had such high hopes for it. However, it really fell short for me. The idea of the Fling app was great, the characters were great, but the writing felt really cringe to me. I won't give examples as I'd hate to ruin for those who haven't read, but some of the dialogue particularly at the end just ruined it for me.
I just want to say that i have not read this book yet as i am a mood reader and have not been in the mood to read this and don’t want my percentage to go down 😊
I found this to be a really easy read. Whilst it touched on some sensitive subjects (possibly check TWs) I find that the author navigated the subjects quite well.
I enjoyed reading this and would recommend to a friend
A charming easy read with an interesting concept … Tara & Colin are struggling after failed IVF attempts, they no longer love the things about each other they fell in love with when they met - after randomly both listening to a radio interview they both download a new app called Fling which actively encourages married parties to cheat and so Tara become Claire and Colin - Jack . What follows is a rom com which I throughly enjoyed and prices that true love always wins in the end
This was an excellent premise and a very light, quick read. Whilst the premise is original, it lacked some of the twists it could have (very predictable) but that didn’t make it any the less enjoyable.
A perfect read for a break.
