I enjoyed this story, although I can't say I warmed to any of the characters, who all seem to be flawed and hiding a lot of secrets. This makes for a more interesting mystery, of course! There were plenty of surprises in this story and it makes for a solid and enjoyable psychological thriller.
Nobody does suspense quite like Louise Candlish and this book is no exception. It is a thriller that will have you captivated with the twists and turns throughout the story - you won't be able to walk away!
This book honestly gave me chills! It’s a fantastic mystery and will have you gripped from the first page until the last !
If you’re looking to completely get lost in a story then look no further!
Would highly recommend
This is a very well written thriller. The storyline is gripping. There are many twists and turns. It is suspenseful. The story is told over a dual timeline by multiple perspectives. Some of the characters are incredibly flawed.
This is one of many books I've read from Louise Candlish, her thrillers make great beach reads.
This one was no different, intriguing and full of twists.
There were points In the story where I became a little lost but overall it was well paced and interesting.
A fast paced story told over two different times. Filled with twists, which I actually didn’t predict! Great for anyone who enjoys crime such as Lisa Jewell or Riley Sager. Always enjoy this author - highly recommended!
The Only Suspect kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I could never have guessed the ending and I was so shocked. The plot was so engaging and I was hooked from the start. I was so eager to find out the truth from the secretive main character.
Alex and his wife Beth live a peaceful life, Alex is a quiet man whereas Beth likes to get involved with the community. Beth decides to help with a nature trial which is being created behind their house. Knowing this, Alex becomes anxious as he is worried about a dark secret will be revealed. In the dual timeline, we meet Rick, a single man until he meets Marina. She is a beautiful girl who works in his office. The more he gets involved with Marina, the more his life begins to change.
The story was a slow burn at the beginning, the two timelines with the different characters with no context of how they are related made me intrigued to read more. The more I read, the more I began to attempt to unravel the secrets, but I was so wrong! I couldn’t put the book down from a certain point so I had to finish it. I was surprised at the ending with all the twists it literally kept me guessing until the end.
The book had an edge to it and it was eerie at times, I loved the way the author described the scenes and it was such an easy read. I also thought the characters were well developed and I was able to become familiar with them throughout the book. It was full of unpredictability and so many twists, a good psychological thriller!
This one was ok but nothing particularly memorable or unique. I enjoyed the main concept of the story and the ending was really good and unexpected.
Another slam dunk by Louise Candlish. A very intricate and craftily written thriller with a satisfying ending which will keep you up and make you wonder who the culprit really is...
A great thriller
With plenty of twists and turns
A book you won’t want to put down
And I was disappointed when I finished it
Thanks NetGalley
The Only Suspect is such a gripping and twisty read! It follows Alex who is acting strange after his wife Beth tells him that the planned nature trail behind their house is finally going to happen. It seems like Alex is not exactly what he seems to be and I felt like I knew where the novel was going early on. But I was so wrong! This novel takes so many unexpected turns that at one point my head was spinning trying to grasp what had happened. It was so good! I definitely recommend this one!
A highly anticipated read for me and part of my 23 in 23 reads. Having read Our House at the start of COVID and enjoying it, I couldn't wait to read this and see where else Louise could take me.
I loved the past and present chapters. Jumping between I felt gave the reader a deeper insight into the character development and what was happening to have caused the events taking place now.
Alex's work events take a turn and he is in trouble and we learn of the secrets behind this. We are taken on a roller coaster of a journey switching between the past and present. I felt Alex thought a lot of himself and as a character, he was not my favourite. He was very self-obsessed and self-centred.
The pace of the book was quite slow for me. I was hoping to be gripped from the start and binging this but unfortunately, it did take me a few days.
Thank you to netgalley, Louise Candlish and Simon and Schuster UK for allowing me access to this ARC.
The Only Suspect was fascinating, with so many twists and turns. I tried to guess at each stage, but I was surprised each time, while still feeling that the author had full control of the narrative. Every twist felt well planned and controlled, and the resolution was neat and well done.
Another clever twisty tale from Louise Candlish.
She does characters so well and uses the past present vibe brilliantly so you are never quite sure exactly where its going.
The writing is excellent and the story twists and turns itself towards an emotionally charged finale.
Really enjoyed it. Recommended.
Well I definitely didn't see that coming. Louise Candlish had me completely fooled and what I thought was going on we wrong.
This is a very clever story with two main storyline, as we discover the details of an old crime and also of what appears to be a man on the verge of a breakdown.
There are plenty of twists to keep you guessing and I really felt sorry for Marina.
Split between the past and present, I was invested in all the characters and was keen to discover what was going on.
Another great book from this always talented author.
Thank you to Simon and Schuster and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Get ready to sleep with the lights on after diving into this heart-pounding thriller, where each unexpected twist left me jumping at every sound. I slept with the big light on 😂
Totally honestly, this book didn't wow me. It was an orderly mystery, but a very slow burning one. I was invested, especially in Rick and Marina's story and some of the twist in it were truly surprising, but they were not enough to make this reading experience special.
While I was absorbed in the characters' lives, why were we introduced to this Zara character? I couldn't grasp her role in the story. Still can't. Did I miss something?
Dual timelines take us from the present to the past and Louise Candlish has written them in a perfect, clear way. I like her writing style, her voice - filled with secrets, you know something big is coming ahead, completely mirroring the atmosphere or rather, bringing the atmosphere to life. The storyline is complex and needs your attention, cleverly intertwining twists, turns and red herrings. It made me wonder - of course - who "did it" and actually "what" and when it turned out the person I was suspecting was THE person, it made me feel satisfied at my own detective skills.
But... Yes. It felt meh. Which is a pity, as Louise Candlish is one of my favourite writers.
Louise Candlish never misses! I really enjoyed this, classic Louise Candlish, intriguing, fast paced and fun.
Louise Candlish at her best! The Only Suspect is my favorite of hers that I've read - she just gets better with every book. Highly recommend.
If you want a book to keep you guessing throughout then this is the book for you.
A cautionary tale of how your deep dark secrets from the past can soon catch up with you in your future.
Full of devious characters that are hiding their secrets but will the secrets finally be revealed ?
A great gripping thriller with lots of twists and turns.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster UK and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book.
