The latest psychological thriller by Louise Candlish, The Only Suspect, is just as exceptional as Our House and The Other Passenger. I devoured this in a couple of days.
A compelling story of love, murder, deception and obsession which sucked me in from the start. I was hooked and hoodwinked!
Another twisty, addictive read by this author; another masterclass in psychological thriller writing.
What an amazing book. Every time I thought I had it sorted out, there was another plot twist to confuse me or another snippet of information that changed the situation.
It's wonderfully written and keeps you guessing right until the end.
I have read several books by Louise and enjoyed every one and this was no exception. Plenty of mystery and suspense it’s a great psychological thriller. If you are a fan of this genre then you will enjoy books by this author. I highly recommend this book and author
I have just finished this book and wow I could not leave it down , finished it in 2 days it was so good. The story has you hooked from the start and each page you turn you get shock after shock and so many twists and turns that you just have to keep reading. I love a book that leaves you flabbergasted that just did not see that coming . I so highly recommend this book as a must read . Not to be missed , I would give it more than 5 stars.
The only suspect
This was my first book by Louise Candlish! I went in with no expectations and it turns out I really enjoyed it! Written from two different eras which are both as riveting as each other, Candlish knows how to keep a reader on the edge of the seat!
I thought I could see where the story was going although the twists and turns completely threw me off guard!! It's a slow burner of a thriller and usually I need a fast paced thriller to keep me entertained, but I needed to finish this story because I NEEDED to know what the ending was! A great thriller and I was captivated from start to finish!
Big thanks to NetGalley and Simon Schuster for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's one that drops you straight into people's lives so that you're engrossed from the beginning. The characters were all really well done - all very different and distinctive and believable. The plot is excellent. But the twist! Just brilliant. I loved it.
Another brilliant read from Louise!
She builds up stories brilliantly and this was no exception.
Alex lives with his wife Beth in a location that has significant meaning to him from his past. A past that he keeps secret from his wife and also has distanced himself from the people of his past. But when the local neighbourhood campaign to have a trail behind his house redeveloped, Alex tries to stay away or else his secret will be uncovered. Just what secrets from the past could Alex be hiding from?
This book was gripping. Would highly recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 Star Read)
. Louise Candlish’s NEW Psychological Thriller Coming Soon.
. The plot goes between present day where ‘Alex’ and his wife Beth are living a quiet life as suburbians to 1995 London scene where Rick meets Marina a mysterious temp in his office.
. The way this book is written is very clever. It follows the storyline exactly how it needs to and never jumps forward and back in time just to create a pattern.
. The characterisation is brilliant and there is just the right amount of characters to get to know throughout the book. Alex’s character development was immense. The way he was described throughout- his feelings, body language everything was very well planned out and made you really connect with him.
. The story is a slow burner, really building up all those characters and relationships and once it gets going it’s just plot twist after plot twist. If you think you have this book figured out you most likely will be wrong- it’s that clever.
. I would recommend this book to lovers of psychological thrillers, this book is edge of your seat stuff when it gets going!
. Congratulations Louise Candlish you’ve outdone yourself!
. Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for approving me for this digital ARC in return for an honest review.
I couldn't put this down, it was full of mystery and suspense and it has unpredictability with twists aplenty. It is perfectly paced and left me wanting more,
A good read follows Alex as his life starts to unravel somewhat ,not her best book but enjoyable all the same .
Wow what a book. Louise does it again. Such a master storyteller and this one does not disappoint. Full of twist and turns galore. Fan of phycological thrillers do not miss this book. I promise it won't disappoint
I really enjoyed this book. The suspense throughout was amazing. I loved the twist and honestly did not see it coming! It was so cleverly written with loads of red herrings. The ending made me feel so sad. Superb!
I will have to say, I felt the first half of this book was drawn out and boring. I started skimming. But the second half of this book was really good. Who is Marina? Who killed her? who is behind all this? People are not who they claim. Your friends are actually not your friends. What happened to Marina? Great suspense and holy cow on the backstabbing and secrets that come out. Don't give up in the first half when it's slow. Power through!
Every time I read a Louise Candlish thriller, I think she can’t get any better, but this book is INSANELY good. Such a gripping, original plot, with characters you really care about - I loved Alex’s voice, and felt his trepidation and fear all the way through, growing in slow increments. You think you might have worked out what’s going on, but then - BOOM. It’s so clever and twisty, but without losing the humanity at its heart. Just incredible.
This book! Brilliantly twisty and utterly compelling, I devoured it in two sittings. A fantastic cast of characters, an inspired setting and a (no spoilers) superb ending. The Only Suspect would make a fantastic film, but as a book it's an absolute must-read
I always love Louise Candlish's novels and I was so excited to receive an advance copy of The Only Suspect. As expected, there were so many twists throughout with the biggest left until the end (although I won't spoil it!). I particularly appreciated the dual timeline, which was very well written. The Only Suspect certainly didn't disappoint.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free advance copy of The Only Suspect in exchange for an honest review.
A tale of murder and lies, but who is telling the truth? Of course there is a brilliant twist - this is Louise Candlish! A then and now story, perfectly paced to keep you on the edge of your seat - perhaps trying to solve the mystery, but why waste time solving it yourself, just keep reading this brilliant thriller. The perfect book for a wet weekend or as a palate cleanser if you have read something a bit worthy!
I saw this book mentioned a few times on the Facebook groups I’m on so of course curiosity got the better of me .. I’ve read some of Louise’s books previous and enjoyed them so was looking forward to this.
Wow, what a story. And the ultimate twist!!! I Was not expecting that what so ever. It’s a really clever, fast paced book. I didn’t want to put it down.
It’s told by two characters perspectives (past and present) and from the beginning you know the present character is associated with the past character but you’re not sure how until the end.
Overall it was a nice easy, clever thriller that I’d highly recommend.
Thank you NetGalley and Simon and Schuster UK for allowing me this opportunity to read and review the only suspect.
Two timelines, present day and 1995. Both fascinating. In the present day, Alex has a lot to worry about. A nature trail is going to be built in the woods backing on to his house and he doesn't like this one little bit. But why? And then his wife Beth moves in her pregnant friend Zara who is very good at winding him up. Life is not good for him. 1995 and we follow Rick, Rollo and Marina. Rick and Marina work in the same building and start going out. Rollo is Rick's friend from university, a spoilt middle class brat. Rick and Marina seem to be happy but she's hiding something.
What I liked: the characterisation was very good. Zara in particular was brilliantly done. Her constant needling at Alex was spot on. She got under my skin as well as his. As with other Candlish books the characters are not particularly likeable but I found I didn't mind. I also enjoyed the plot very much. Everything tied up in a very satisfactory way.
What I didn't like: I can't think of anything other than Rick being too gullible for his own good. But then, some people are, aren't they?
Would I recommend? Yes, definitely. This is for anyone who loves domestic noir, split timelines, psychological thrillers. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
This story follows two timelines and swaps easily and fascinatingly between the two.. Beth and Alex, with their dog Olive and their “houseguest” Zara are the main characters in present day, and, from 1995 Rick, Marina and Rollo. Both plot lines are equally as absorbing, with the settings and events exquisitely written.
Candlish has done it again! Every book she writes is full of intrigue and twists, with characters that we love and hate in equal measure. After Our House I thought nothing would equal it, but her writing just gets better and better, what a talent! Every new book is eagerly anticipated and she never disappoints, a must read author with this new book being up there with the rest.
I read in one day and thoroughly recommend. Pure escapism, certainly kept me guessing. A proper crime mystery.
Thank you NetGalley.
